When I place items up for research, the bottom of the window shows what components I'm expected to receive. After the experiment is over, I'm lucky if half of what was promised goes into my overflow bag.
Example:
I'm told "You will receive some of 9-A, 23-B, 2-C, 7-D"
I get "1-A, 3-B, 0-C, 3-D"
WTH?
I had never really paid attention to what I was actually getting until I recently realized I'm having a hard time building resources to use for blueprints. Once I started comparing the prediction to the result it became clear why I'm always short. I'm getting cheated!

I have the same thing.
I always assumed it was either a reflection of the stack of items I already had in my inventory at the time I break something down, or the number next to the item is divided based upon the skill level I am currently at, and what the item I am breaking down is, even if I did not craft it. This assumes dropped items have a crafting level of some kind.
I can't say for certain which one is the right one, because a few times, I have gotten full amounts, and other times, there were no numbers next to the breakdown, and I got one (assuming no numbers mean just one from the breakdown.)
If someone else knows, I'd appreciate the input.
Edit: I think I got the typos this time.
