Maybe I'm in a sweet spot, but the last few alts I've made and leveled up to, say... 13... have all been able to fully retcon with the normal chump-change I've gathered doing the Ho-hum Desert/Canada missions.
In other words, at least at this point... retcon pricing seems appropriate.

What ARE the costs of retconning! What if I am level 18?

I noticed that as well. It looks like once you hit about level 17-20, the price starts scaling to where you can't do a full retcon anymore with normal income. On the other hand, I obsessively craft rather than sell, so I have 1/3 less money than I might otherwise.
Looks like design philosophy at the moment is that if you're unhappy at any time until level 15 or so, go ahead and retcon. And if you're clever, you can do a full retcon at 15 and then put the stuff you know you'll NEVER change at the bottom, leaving your more iffy changes up top and cheaper to get to in the future.

Yeah, I found the same thing to be true last night on a level 10 alt. I had plenty of money to back up and retcon a couple of times. Now on my level 35 main, it's a different story. There are some choices I wouldn't mind retconning WAY far back, but I don't want to pay hundreds of gold. I don't even know if I could afford to anyway, because there's nothing telling me the cumulative cost of backing out to a particular step. It IS a little frustrating, because the changes would result in a minor tweak to his build, but I'd be paying for it as though I was totally reinventing the character. In his case I'll probably just wait for the next free retcon.

Question: How far can you retcon if you CAN afford it?

I'm not sure if it's changed but I believe you can only change the last 20 choices you've made. So once you get into the mid 20s its no longer possible to change the first couple powers you picked.

Ahh they must have change it then, in beta they placed a limitation upon how far back you could retcon.
