The title pretty much says it all. Even the ones that are gray to me are more deadly than any even level foe. Once they get summoned I'm likely to get killed no matter what. Their fireballs are "they win" buttons. My defences don't exist to them
Is this the way they are supposed to work? And if so, why?

I have personally never had this problem. The only issue I have ever had with Deamonlings and other NPCs of similar height is that when trying to Gatling gun the groupb they're with, you cannot hit them if your target is roughly human-sized.
For the book-keeping purposes of those who care:
Last time I fought Deamonlings I was ~lvl 25, packing a 2GM/GG-centric DEX/EGO Muntions toon in Protector rocking the Lightning Reflexes Passive Defense.
EDIT:
Also, they were +2 or +3 to my level.

I would have to agree with the OP. I have a character with invulnerability and a crapload of con, yet a single trash group of demonlings are almost more than she can handle. I would put a battle with them on par with a battle with a super villain, if not above that.

Numskll we kinda need numbers and stats, and defenses. For example if your -5 to their level don't have any defensive passives, block powers and have Endurance/Rec super-stated then maybe just maybe it's you and not the demonlings.
If however your a STR/CON Invulnerability running character, which is +5 levels higher than they are and they still tear you apart them maybe we need to look into it.
In both cases we need numbers, information. Not
What ARE your defenses, what level are they? What level are you? Who's summoning them? I can tell you personally on my now Lvl 38 Str/Con tank character that no one minion or pair of minions is a challenge to me except the schools of piranha style mobs who much through my hit points in ten seconds or less, but die to a single hit from any of my attacks and two hits from my energy builder. If the Demonlings were hitting harder than normal I did not notice but them the entire character is a "sit there and take it" including having Laser Knight running 24/7 and having Str/CON via equipment sitting around 260 each so I know I represent the high end of survivability. Where are you?

I agree, but I am pleased there are some enemies that are ridiculously hard.
Might force me to have to team-up :)

Lone summon as a pet I've never had trouble with, now when they're in packs of 3-4 that's another story.

They seem really OP compared to anything else in the game. I've noticed this on the two toons I've leveled far enough to fight them. I don't have a similar problem with any of the fire based minions.
Let me say again the ones I'm whining about are gray to me and summoned by some random green to me demon ladies on the street -- the ones that guard the aces and eights contact are a good example. So it isn't just me trying to bite off more than I can chew (at least not intentionally . . . heh). I'm all for challenging game play, but if they are meant to be terrors they should con as terrors, not fluffy bunnies. And they should be taller-- much, much taller.
level 27
defenses around 50
I have personal force field at rank 2
I've got the force shield block (rank 1) and use it
I''ve also got field surge and use it
I'm a pure force build so I've concentrated on ego and end.
I'm not a master at the numbers but I can tell the results in game. Those demonlings are "special" unlike anything else I've messed with. Again, I'm curious if this is intended or something that is being looked into.
