This new name system is useful, but has a major drawback.
I tend to make friends with the characters I meet - and like to think of it that way.
Mr Fantastic. Supercroc etc.
But when I friend them, I actually become friends with @someone
Then my friends list keeps on telling me @someone is here or there - but I have no idea who that is!
Is there any way to change settings so you can see the 'hero' you are friends with, rather than the player?

Yeah it's got its drawbacks. I'm still unsure which system I like better. I love being able to choose whatever name I want but I hate some of the drawbacks a lot.

/tell screenname should work if you don't put the @loginname
When you login, it should list your friends online
When you login, it should list your friends online

I suppose I'm the opposite. I like associating with people's characters, but the more lasting relationship comes from the person behind the character. With the @systerm, I have something to call people if I want to talk to THEM and something to call people if I want to talk to their characters.
Like you, I was skeptical about it. I thought it was clunky and confusing as well, but before long I stopped noticing the fact that there were two names displayed every time someone talked. They both became equally valid. What really won me over, though, is the fact that you don't have to keep track of who is who.
Other games, you spend a lot of time confused over whether this person really is the person they say they are. You suddenly get a text out of the blue, "hey i'm so and so"... or you have multiple guildmates with 3-8 alts and no idea who is who. I really started appreciating the @system when I realized that I'd never have to write down who is who or ask "who the hell are you anyway?" to someone I know I've known for a long time.
