I was going to guess running a massive hype machine on the tracks of a very popular universe. Am I right?

THAT is the reason. There wasn't anywhere near that number of MMO gamers around before WoW, they didn't come from other MMOs in comparison to WoWs population, they came from b.net. |

If you guys are gonna drag WoW comparisons onto the forums, I will say this: I remebered playing a Mage at WoW launch alongside my friend who was playing a hunter. What I remember was getting really frustrated playing a toon that had tons of downtime between fights and Lord help you if you pulled an add. I also remember that it was like he was playing an entirely different game....
THAT is what I hope CO doesn't do. If there are power balance problems between classes, I hope they address them, and don't leave an given power set to flap in the breeze. As for difficulty level, I did start to feel that old "pull an add and die" twinge on my CO toon after the patch, but it's not as bad as the Bad Ol Days of WoW...

World of ******** is testament that people are sheep and you can make them go anywhere with a stick, string and a carrot. I beta'd ********, I played ********, and I top end raided in ******** long ago. And once I realized the game was a treadmill with a skill required level of your average window licker to be competent I left.
And yes, ******** was tragic at launch. Blizzard had the $$ to dump into buildings of servers however to keep up with the blitzkrieg demand.

Build a reputation for making awesome games. Release an MMO at just the right moment when the mainstream news media are looking for MMO and gaming related news stories to broadcast. Rake in a new audience of people who have never played an MMO before, but will now because its trendy and their friends are playing it. Get drop in mentions in the scripts for mainstream TV programs. Rake in even more new players. Ride the wave and enjoy it. Have a LOL at companies like SOE and Lucasarts who happily destroy their games with horrific game changing patches in a futile attempt to beat you. Buy a nice car and a nice house with a garage or four to put it in. Win at life. The end. |

I think the thing that Cryptic needs to do to remedy this is to release a clear-cut statement defining what they see as the "direction and goals" of this game.

I absolutely agree that this should happen. Tell us what your vision is now. At least then we will know what you are striving for. I know for myself, I would be much more tolerant of a bumpy road ahead if I knew what the final destination was.

Many people may not agree with the direction CO is taking but I have seen nothing to approach how buggy Wow was the first few weeks. And I enjoyed WoW for what it was, light entertainment, easy play for an MMO (compared with my years of EQ1) and had some nice humour value. Its biggest fault to me as always been the community itself. The group for one quest then run off without saying a thing. Unfortunately this has carried over to CO. I will admit I have done it as well as the quest system sort of encourages it.

Spot-on.
I bought it on the opening day, even though I enjoyed it immensely I despised bugs such as:
1. "Kneel-surfing" which was so prevalent when Looting, you could move around, could not attack, could not defend, but still could still die.
2. Queuing to get onto my server every night, some queues had me waiting for 20 minutes.
3. Terrible Balance, not to mention bugs in abilities and Talent trees.
4. The only sort of PvP was World-PvP, which never worked very well in big numbers, as it would cause the server to lag and then crash.
5. Killer Lag.
6. Gaps between content, some brackets of levelling could be mind-numbingly boring and painful (40-50).
7. A lot more in the way of Group quests that required you to take an Elite down, things are so much easier now.
8. And of course, the community, it's one of the worst in the MMO world. I know AoC is bad, but WoW can be just pure venom on their Forums, for no reason at all.
And anyone who thinks that WoW genuinely has 11 Million folks playing it is deluded. Blizzard is very "liberal" with it's numbers. I think the truth is that there are 11 million accounts, and I'd like to know how many are active, I'll bet it's not 11 Million; more like a lot less.
