Also the reason my first character took so long to finish the perk is because her long range power is only 50 feet.

You're supposed to be a superhero fighting off an invasion. You don't take one shot at each and you don't let them stand around until they get reinforcements. If either of those things is expected to complete the perk, then it is poorly designed.
