since I have a lifetime membership will I have to enter my retail key or will I keep being allowed to play without it?

You can play up to the 4th (I think) and then you'll need to put in your key.

As the above poster said, the subscription deals only cover the SUBSCRIPTION COST. You still need to purchase a retail copy of CO.
