I love making new heroes, and strange as it may seem, I love taking them through the same game over and over again - sure it's the same quests, but it's not the same experience. Each time there's something different because I'm playing a different character.
And for this I offer MY thanks to the devs.

I will add that at least one more leveling path would be nice, though...

This game's leveling system is the most boring out there. No interesting battles, no interesting quests aside from a couple lairs, no real sense of progression, etc.
The only real enjoyment I have gotten out of it is playing with my friends, and they are all off to other games.
I don't see how anyone can call this game "ideal". It's a fun game, but there is just to much muck after your 3rd or 4th character grinding quests.

Funny you should mention Pavlov. There are a plethora of articles out about the psychology of MMO's, and some of them stress the Pavlovian nature of these games, stressing the action/reward sequence. As these games progress, the developer in these games stretches out the time needed to perform the "action" to prolong the rat's (us) time in the game, often providing a bigger or better reward, but the challenge is to do so without reaching the point where there is so long between rewards that the rat stops performing the action. This perspective presents a rather depressing picture, until you realize that what is really being stimulated by an MMO is the user's imagination and sense of immersion in the game. Without that, MMO's really are just action/reward cycles. Racing to cap is an action that many choose. While they might be better served to prolong the game by stopping to smell the flowers, some seem incapable of that type of play. For them, the reward inherent to reaching 40 is too small. |
The addictive personalities out there flock to these games and DO NOT stop to smell the roses and as such miss the real fun of these games. Imaginative imerssion in a fantasy world like AD&D when i was a kid.
I take my time and just have fun witht he stories and the perks.
I find when I do hit 40 this way im usually rich and skilled on my character more so than if Id power levelled to get there.
Im off work in 5 minutes and i wanna go home and play Champions!

I don't think the problem is lack of end game content, but just content. We could really use some more lower level zones for alternate leveling paths. I agree with everyone that said this game is about character concept and creation, and I have absolutely no problem making a new toon everytime I hit 40 to try out a new concept and playstyle, it's one of the things I love about this game. I've only been playing for about 4 months and already have 13 toons, and sometimes it does get a little boring playing the same exact missions each time. If this game is going to based around continually making and playing new characters, lets embrace it and give the people with alt-itis more to do. Forget endgame and just give us more zones. It would be so much better if we only had to repeat the same missions on every other toon, instead of every toon. I think this would make a lot more people happy than throwing in a few 40 raids that people will quickly get tired of.
Oh, and please.... pretty please, with sugar on top..... add some more missions to the nemesis system. It's probably the most fun part of the game when you first start, but after a toon or two you quickly notice how much it lacks. I'm not asking for a complete revamp or reworking of the system like some want, just add a bunch of new missions into the rotation.
