Questions regarding magic and planes of existence in the Champions universe
07-27-2010, 05:13 AM
I've got a couple of questions regarding magic:
1) What, if any, are the different types of magic?
2) Does it have a single source?
3) Can anyone learn magic or does it require either an innate ability or an outside influence (bestowed by a greater power, artifact, etc.)
4) What is the Qliphothic dimension precisely?
5) Does something like the netherworld/hell exist? What about other myths (e.g. norse, egyptian, etc.)?

@Mess: The warp in WH40K is a place where all emotions (especially humans and eldar) evolved to become "alive" (like the Eldar created Slaanesh because of their lust)
@Kendaric:
1) What, if any, are the different types of magic?
There are any kinds of magic. ALL kind of magic you can think of are possible in the Champions universe. From the old classic wizard, to robots casting spells.
2) Does it have a single source?
Not 100% there are different sources, but it all acts the same.
3) Can anyone learn magic or does it require either an innate ability or an outside influence (bestowed by a greater power, artifact, etc.)
Not everybody can become a scientist, but everybody can study science. It is the same with Magic.
4) What is the Qliphothic dimension precisely?
To lazy to look it up, but it is your standard demon-realm.
5) Does something like the netherworld/hell exist? What about other myths (e.g. norse, egyptian, etc.)?
Yes, it exist all.

The above links might help answer some questions. For specifics:
1a.) I believe whatever you've seen in fiction is possible. Like in CO; there both regionally influenced magic as well as all-encompasing "Comic Book" style magic.
2a.) Kinda, Yes as far as ambient magic that everyone taps into, it's a fundimental force like gravity. No, in that there is no single origin for magical powers (see answer 3).
3a.) All of the above.
4a) See 5a. I wanna say Negative Universe though I'm not sure that's an accurate description.
5a.) Yes, pretty sure all of the above and then some. Like there are the Astral Realms of Art, Nature, Order & Chaos, Faerie, the Neitherworld and Elysium. And these are just sub-worlds to a more higher-level cosmology based on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life (which includes the Qliphothic World) Tyrannon the Conqueror and Skarn the Shaper are multi-dimensional magicial beings that attempt to control all the wolrds and then there is The Dragon, which is the universal personification of evil.

For the most thorough review of magic and mysticism in the Champions Universe, pick up our book The Mystic World. It's a 5th Ed. book, but the setting information remains 100% applicable to the 6th Ed. (i.e., post-CO) Champions Universe. I have updated (or am updating) some parts of it in 6E books such as Champions Universe and the forthcoming Champions Villains trilogy, but the bulk of the information remains in TMW for now.

Someone told me that some of the the Kings of Edom, who are basically the Old Ones from the Lovecraft universe, were imprisoned in Earth's moon, and that's why Earth has so much magic when compared to anywhere else.
