So, like a lot of people I just started a new Power Armor based character. At level 29 (nearly 30), hitting every Arms node I saw (including a 90 minute or so fly-through of Canada doing nothing but tapping accessible nodes) and combining all the time his skill is all the way up to maybe 85. This means that even if I were to put in the time to push through to 101 so he could access the nodes in the areas he's currently doing missions in it would be too late, because he's about to level into areas that require higher skill.
Simply put, with the skill increments from scrapping gear gone, the process is too slow. Skill increases have to keep some reasonable pace with the speed of leveling because of the way the node system works and right now they just don't. Something's got to give here.

I'm lucky enough to have a few characters with 400 crafting already, but yeah, i've notice at least on my new toons, That I'll get to level 30+ and till have less then 100 crafting, It gets a bit ridiculous, and no one wants to fly around for several hours node hunting.

On my respecced power armor character, I had to literally stop for about 2 hours to do nothing more than fly around the desert collecting mods so I could continue to harvest from level appropriate nodes. Now, while I admit I did have something resembling either fun or insanity (hard to tell sometimes) trying to find all the VIPER Grond Hunter pits at the same time, I'd really rather not have to do this again, ever.
Honestly, after I was done, I had hit the level of boredom where shiny objects seemed mildly amusing. You, the mind-numbing level. I'm really hoping they put back in some alternate method of raising crafting skill and getting mods. =\
On the bright side, at least mods are worth something, where as before you spent hours upon hours of boring work once you got up to max level, only to make, as I recall, the third best gear in the game.

I agree totally. I did same thing for too many times, just flying around Canada and desert to try to find nodes. I really hope crafting skills raises faster.

I'm really happy that i have a lot of old chars with 400 skill, so i just ignore leveling it now on new characters,
since the new system is just annoying with the low number and high respawn timers of the nodes we have.

Under the old crafting system, my crafting skill would raise faster than my level. Under the new system, my crafting skill can't keep up.
My problem is I have a lot of mid-level characters that need to change skills and releveling them under a new skill would take forever.

The (not) surprising part of this is that we have been saying from the beginning, in numerous threads on the forums, that leveling up crafting skill by nodes is too slow and it still hasn't been improved. BUT...
We have great new catalysts that can be bought to raise up a mod 1 level for the small price of your first and second unborn children and half your soul.
So all is well, right?

Luckily, I had 4 or five toons at 400 crafting pre patch.
So I just put everything in my shared storage and crack the whip on them to fuse ****.

It was a deep cut for me. I had so many lvl 40 toons with full crafting. THen my freeform slot made me decide to end subscription.
I'm working EXTREMELY hard to get my crafting back to 400 but it's a worse grind than Questionite.
Oh and what do i get in return for all this hard work? I find out that the gear that I actually WANT is not create-able through mods and fusion because the Endgame Vendors don't carry Crowd Control.
