Weekends are bad enough, it seems, and with this one being a holiday, I would expect support staff to be even lower. However, we REALLY do not need another weekend of showing off game server crashes and a slow response time.

Most likely it was sent to anyone who is signed up to receive the newsletters, active subscriber or not.

This x 1000. I like this game so please do not screw up this weekend for new players. Hopefully that does not come as sounding mean but I want this game to have a chance and really wish to see it running for years(yes, I got a lifetime sub).

Note to Cryptic: update the downloadable clients, if you haven't done so already. Most of the problems that weekend were caused by patching queues, not from downloading. ;)

Hopefully this is a) simple and b) already done. I like the idea of growing the community/retaining players, and would like to see the promo succeed.

I hope some content patches come out to help the game. Post level 20ish, I just have a hard time finding a reason to log in. It just becomes a bit dull and same-same.

These promotions are nice to bring in new players, but how can we keep them engaged for the long haul?

Hard knocks with the Star Trek preview too, it took a neat swipe at Champion's combat gameplay. ouch.

Lets see, there's the real life, the Earth&Beyond life that ended, the CoH life, the **** life, a lot of smaller online ones (distributed on for instance WoW, Seed, SWG) kind of bundled together as one, a lot of smaller offline ones also bundled (like Okami, Twilight Princess, Valkyria Chronicles, Orange Box, Borderlands, Call for Juarez 2, just to mention some of them), the Champions life... ah. There it is. Number seven.

Although, if possible, I'd like to transfer those days to life #1, the real one. It has far too little time these days.

Hear, hear. On balance, the balance of time between lifes are a bit unbalanced. For instance, the sub-part of the real life life that's work-related seems to take up a disproportionally big part of the whole, even to the extent of encroaching on the CO part of the real life life.

I received that newsletter in my junk e-mail box, and before I searched here, I was under the mistaken impression it was a phishing scam.

Now, while I don't click the stuff in e-mails i get from other places as it's mostly people trying to get your money and or account info, I wanted to find out directly from the source about it all. I can say I'm frankly relieved.

please tell me that unlike the other free weekend you have upgraded the servers to cope with the increased player base. As a paying customer I dont want to be punished again by not being able to log in due to the "freeloaders" that you trying to attract to the game.

I tell you this, if you are unable to cope this time I will not be renewing my missus account that only plays now and again, mainly on weekends, in which she often cant get online due to "issues" that get blamed to other areas even though it works fine rest of the time when try.

No doubt this be ignored, but cant defend Cryptic anymore and I defended them a hell of a lot in the forums I frequently post on.

Is the the free weekend going to be offered on steam again?

Steam usage usage prob. caused a ton of lag too, but it does it does simplify installs.

On the other hand,
As a free user still, steam allows me to test Champions Online without making a bunch changes to my registry by a full install. Steam you hit delete and its gone, maybe run a registry cleaner and a registry defrag and its clean.

I love the champions pen and paper system, could anyone tell me how close to the pen and paper system this runs? How much different than COH/COV is it? I'm looking through the PDF and there are a LOT of things I wished available in City. I may end up hooked lol :)

As far as the PnP version goes not even close except for the take any power you want but the advantage system just dosent cut it vrs the spend points bit for the PnP.

That said i still enjoy the hell out of the diversity here and the open framework is also its biggest change from CoX.

it REALLY amazes me, that a lot of people complain of high latency / rubber banding etc. when I don't seem to experience any of this. Living in South Africa we are way below par when it comes to the majority of first world countries especially when it comes to telecommunications... oh well I guess this country is good for something - low latency on CO - yippee :D

Mine is pretty low too, even on a free weekend " account ".. i go in and i explored even the most populated areas last time, and had zero lag.

I can install the game fine, but then it gives me that old classic ..... No shards found. You have a ticket with 1 permission pair, but no shards were found. Gaghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I have an account, have downloaded and installed the client, but cannot play the "Free" weekend. These are some of the same issues I had when the closed beta was going. It's almost like they don't want my money. Oh, well. Off to play WoW / AoC now.

Where did you get your client from? If you got it from steam its an old crappy version. Get the one thats linked directly from the Champs Website its the up to date client except for maybe 1 patch.

Steam's Client has had issues since launch..Never get the Steam Client. BTW to prove i know what im talking about I just patched in less than 3 mins.

YOu have to still sign up for a "Free" Account from the front of a website I'm pretty sure they posted FAQ's / Helper posts in the Dev Post forum. Try reading them. Don't get the crappy Steam Client Get the client directly from CO"s free weekend add on the front of the website.

Posting this for a friend of mine:

A friend of mine bought the game at the same time as me, which was a preorder before the game was launched. He played through the first month, and found the game to be... "unsatisfying". With the news of a free weekend, he decided to reinstall the game in order to try out if the game had improved since the initial month. After going through the process of installing the game, he is able to log onto the launcher, but gets greeted by the standard message

"No shards found. You have a ticket with 1 permission pair, but no shards were found"

He then logged onto this site and wanted to make a post, asking for a solution to this since, it was supposed to be a "free" weekend, he is greeted by the message

"Only members with a currently active subscription may post in this forum"

So what's the deal here Cryptic? Is he suppose to reactivate his account, and pay for 1 month of gametime, in order to get the "free" weekend? Sounds like a scam to me... and I bought the lifetime subscription of this game (shame on me).

DId you actually Sign up Using the FREE WEEKEND link from the front of the website or the beginning of this post? I'm pretty sure you can't just Sign In using a previous account that you must Sign Up from the front of the website to Flag even a previous account.

You can't just Sign in using a previous account without Flagging it in some way that your using the Free Weekend. Commmon sense people it says Sign Up for the Free Weekend. Your account doesnt Know its using the Free Weekend account. Its not the client that is flagged its your account that needs to be flagged.

Click the Link from the Starting Post and follow the directions you should be able to FLAG your previous account that way. The No Shards Found means your account is Not Flagged.

Please for the love of all that is good in this world learn to use common sense and follow directions people.

"Scam" can mean many things:

"A confidence trick or confidence game (also known as a bunko, con, flim flam, gaffle, grift, hustle, scam, scheme, or swindle) is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence."

In this case, Cryptic advertised a free weekend both for potential new customers, and in an attempt to regain some of it's lost customers (such as my friend). My friend reinstalled the game, updated it, and gets greeted by the message I stated above. If utilizing the "free weekend" requires my friend to reactivate and pay for an additional month of gametime, then it's not a "free weekend", is it?

By the time anyone at Cryptic has read this thread, the "free weekend" will be over, and thus all attempts by my friend to try out the game for the "free weekend" will have been for nothing.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case..so far the very small but noisey group of people tha tcouldn't play during the weekend due to the no shards error are people who can't read the Sign up for Free weekend part and just assume that creating a Cryptic account signs them up for the game...

How far did you get? Out of the tutorials? Did you try adjusting your performance settings? Are you using an ATI video card? How many other processes did you have running at the same time? Are you behind a firewall or using a proxy? *insert any other of the bazillion things that slow CO down here*

I had my doubts about the game even before I started playing it (not really into super hero games) but was pleasantly surprised by the game (even if i dont fully understand it yet) once I got passed the character creation I had a ball.

GAH!!!!!! I had an absolute BLAST playing this weekend. I got way more time this weekend than I did during the previous one. I am dead certain I need to get this game ASAP!!!! Unfortunately due to unexpected emergencies I am stuck waiting for quite a while for it. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!! Can I possibly talk you guys into having another free weekend next month? Seriously though, I made many characters this past weekend, just trying out things and actually managed to get two characters to level 12-13 and I can say that I never had this much fun in the early levels of any MMO. Especially CoH, I HATED the content below level 30 there. I am greatly looking forward to seeing more of the game as soon as possible.
