View Full Version : Why so lame?

I'm new to the game. I play so I can meet my friends online and have some fun. However, due to the time differences, I play most of the time solo. Is this game exclusively for multi-player teams? I die allot because I'm always fighting three or four on one. If I go defensive, I don't hit anything and it just takes longer for me to die. If I go offensive, I kill one or two, but then I die. Should I be paying money for some other game that is designed for solo players? I understand that Atari is new to the Online Gaming scene. It would be a shame to go out of business so soon just because the Dev's have their heads up their asses. Perhaps if I didn't have to be overwhelmed with mobs 100 percent of the time, I wouldn't be telling people to save their money and buy another game. It would be nice to have a fair game for solo players and not have to depend on three or four players to hook up with every time I log on.

Most people consider CO to be s single-player game with some teaming missions thrown in. If you're dying a lot I'd tells you to look at buying a Defensive Power and remember to Block. Block is a huge part of the design of this game and works well in the proper attack/defend roations. You have to alter your play style to CO's system. You can't assume you can bring in an existing play style and force CO to bend to your will.

You're looking for an "I WIN" button and this game is not for you. If your friends are lof the same mindset as you, please do tell them not to buy the game. We don't need more people to complain about their failing and blame it on the devs.
Seriously if you are having that much of a problem, you are doing something wrong. It really is that simple.

Dude, this is probably the most solo friendly MMO ever. Seriously.
The two big points raised in comic's post bove are what I'd start with - Get yourself a defensive passive (and make sure you're superstatted for it) and block. Block, block, blockity-block.
:)
Hit me up IG if you want more help.. I don't necessarily mean help killing stuff, although I'll do that too, I mean help understanding the mechanics of this game. Mechanics-wise, like gameplay-wise, this game doesn't work in quite the same way as a standard Diku-style MMO, so it takes a bit of getting used to before you can start making informed, intelligent power choices.
But once you got the hang of it this game is -seriously- easy mode.

Whoa, slow down. He's new. I know that my ability to make a powerful character gets better each and every time I roll a toon. If it wasn't for the fact that pre-launch this game was -even easier-, I might have been in the same position with my Very First Character.
If you came out of the gate and made a toon that can solo Andrith on your very first attempt, more props to you. You win a cookie. I hope your e-pants can handle the size of your e-peen.

hi there :)
seems like you're having trouble with defense in game, i would suggest giving this thread a quick look at (http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=72788) as it'll help give some pointers on how to boost defense up some. *NOT-SO-NINJA EDIT* The man himself sent me his excellent post on actual maths behind the numbers for defensives, and i would HIGHLY suggest this thread be given some time for making a very solid defense
Rune's defensive passives thread (http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=85948)
some serious work put in here, worth taking time to go over
i would also suggest looking up some of the information on the boards regarding synergy of powers/stats and how certain combinations of them work with each other (i'd provide a link but i've yet to find a post with this explained all in one easy hit, thinking about doing it myself)
CO can be very friendly to solo play, and while some of the teaming mechanics need some tweaking you shouldnt *have* to team for anything unless it gives you a number of players in the quest name (normally follows the name in brackets like "search and destroyer (5)" which indicates its meant for 5 players)
a lot of people are able to handle missions for 2 players or so on their own, so the ability to make a strong defensive character is there, but due to the classless set up it can be a little harder than most MMO's to find.
drop into the foxbat Q&A section (http://forums.champions-online.com/forumdisplay.php?f=94) and the combat and powers section (http://forums.champions-online.com/forumdisplay.php?f=96) of the forums and have a look about, if you cant find what your looking for pop in a thread giving specifics. you may be asked to post your build or other bits by players so they can help you locate areas to bring up those defensive powers.
hope that helps some :)

Raphael_diSanto, I agree that we should give the op some slack owing to his newness, but Deathpickle is right insofar as the kid is being clueless and snotty He may be new, but when an ungrammatical teen asserts that "the dev's have their heads up their asses" and boasts that he's telling others not to play before he has even the vaguest idea how the game actually works then he is deserving of condemnation in roughly equal measure to any assistance that might (and should) be offered. I'd had given the kid props if he had come on to ask for help in figuring out how to play but instead he asserts the game is "lame" and then proceeds to simply whine and doom spam. The fact that there is validity in the notion that a new player shouldn't be expected to get a “powerful” build on his VERY FIRST CHARACTER does not offset the fact that this sort of petulant tone and adolescent demeanor is flatly inappropriate for these boards and should not be encouraged.

My advice would be, stay in Guardian Build, pick a defensive Passive that is tuned to your SS attributes, and take a block/shield ability and use it!
This game is totally solo friendly, but even with concept toons there are a couple fundamentals to staying alive. My advice is short and to the point, but should keep you alive.
Edit: Lol...and welcome to CO!!!

Its funny, cause I only read the first half of the OP and figured: Ok, I get it, they are new and need help.
After reading THIS post I went back and read the rest and wished I had read it earlier. You are right, he has the frustration of not being able to play and so he is shooting down the devs rather then asking for advice.
He further goes on to admit he is bad mouthing the game to friends... Clearly its *The* classic: angry cry for help while not wanting to admit one's own short comings.

The game really is very solo friendly, the problem is creating a toon is not explained very well.
For 1, you either need a passive defense or a means of healing yourself. You pretty much have to have one or the other, both wouldn't hurt though.
Keep in mind what powers you plan on taking and pick up the Super Stats that are needed for them to be effective. This makes a huge difference.
Keep your gear relatively up to date. As you get higher the stats have to be to hit that soft cap and beyond. Higher level gear has more stat + than lower level gear.
If you are having a fair amount of trouble soloing, then pick up a pet. Munition bots are great in Turret mode. Zombie's and Wolve's fit other concepts better. Healing drones are helpful. There are many pets.
The game is extremely solo friendly but it's not readily explained as to how to set your toon up for it.Check though the forums get some ideas on builds, learn how they work and you will be fine.

It's not the game, it's you.
Starting out with any MMO can be rough in getting used to. The keybinds are different, how it's played is different, skilling up is different. However, you really need to learn to play before start to talk smack on the devs. My might/supernatural hybrid can handle team instances solo most of the time, with few deaths. My gadgeteer/power armor guy can take out team instances with no deaths. Its all about technique and strategy. And just a thought, team up, I guarantee you're not the only person at any given time who's doing that quest. Toss an invite and you're probably going to get someone else to help out and maybe do a few other missions.

Exactly. Had the OP not been such a schmuck about it, then my response wouldn't of been so hostile. People need to learn that in life, they get what they give.
Calling the devs out in that manner when it is clearly not their problem, deserves the baking the OP gets.

Some people don't know how to express frustration without condemnation. That's true whether someone is a teen or 60 years old. Heck, how many times do we see people attack the poster rather then the idea posted on the forum? Happens all the time. Even in this thread words like "ungrammatical" are used to insult the poster rather then giving a thought to the idea that the poster might not have English as his native language. We're all too quick to point fingers, IMO.

This is all very true, but when ya get down to it, even the title : Why so lame? is an "Attack". I understand the psycology behind this type of post, but when people enjoy something or are part of something and they feel a new person or outsider is *Attacking* the first knee-jerk reaction is to fire back.
Cosmic_One's school of thought is one I agree with. What they give they should get. Every post that "Fired back" at least explained WHY they felt hostile towards the OP and sometimes a person needs that to help grow.Yep, this post is pretty psyco-babbly-ish.

Well, each individual is responsible for there own behavoir. If you don't agree with the OP of a thread there is a mature way to state that. A bit of coutesy goes a long way, while the flames simply generate more in kind.
A saying that fits the above: Two wrongs don't make a right.
Also as far as you stating it helps them grow, I will point out that when people see others acting this way they take that as a sign as it's ok. All this does is encourage more of the same kind of behavoir.
Some sayings that fit this: Lead by example or Monkey see monkey do.
Saying, well they kind of deserved it does not excuse poor behavoir. If they truly did deserve it all that means is that you are both in the wrong.

You know, for a game that's pitched as a pick-up-and-play action style game, this is the least user friendly game I've ever played, period. I'm a hardcore RPG/MMO veteran, and there was a whole lot of important information I only learned by plowing the forums like it was my job and a lot of experimentation.
Useful documentation for many important gameplay elements, in game or otherwise, is nonexistent.
Sure, the OP could have been more mature in expressing his frustration but the reason for his frustration is solely Cryptic's fault.
Also, you guys should step down off your high horses pretty damn quickly, and stop chasing away anyone who doesn't like something about the game.
You need every single human being who's willing to give this game even half a chance to stick around and continue to play it.

This game is also incredibly easy to group in. Me and a friend have been grouping the whole time, and because the XP is all from quests and barely any from mobs, groups are a good way to go as well.

I don't understand how you can die a lot. I die fairly rarely and usually only when I'm either (a) lagged out or (b) trying to take on Super Villains in 5 person lairs solo. From your post I can only guess that you're switching builds as you go along but the problem with switching builds is that they only suit certain circumstances, i.e. if you go all out offensive - it's usually meant for groups where you're in a dps mode and there's maybe a healer around to throw out a couple heals every now and then; if you go full defensives - this usually means you're in tank mode where your team mates will be the ones doing the dps while you keep aggro.
If you're soloing then it would be advisable to go for the middle ground. Seriously, I have that silly lag-in-groups problem and I haven't really grouped for anything for over a month now. Currently trying to solo White Rhino on Monster Island. Should be doable but I just haven't figured out how yet.

Yeah, you raise an interesting point and have a well stated case.
Yes, people could be more *Calm* in explaining WHY he shouldn't blame others for his frustrations, but there were no "Two Wrongs" in this situation.
So, a couple people didn't respond to his rant *perfectly*. This is the forums, and it would be great if everyone could see the error of his/her ways. I am far from perfect, yet I often DO help those like this OP, but SOMETIMES people aren't at 100% and don't feel like helping to modify the behavior of some disgruntled kid...yet again.
Maybe thats the problem with text, the child is not with us "in person". In person, we would prolly all handle this differantly (I know I would). On the forums I will help those who ask, debate those with solid veiws, and have a laugh in between, but when someone berates the game with no ground to stand on, well then its on them to deal with the results.
Edit: Yeah, it seems a bit harsh, but I haven't had coffee yet.
Edit: Also, GreyGhost, don't take this argument TOO seriously, cause I'm starting to enjoy this debate!

This would be a situation where commen sense would tell you hit left out "for" or something similar.
In defensive role your damage is reduced. So something like..........
If I go defensive, I don't hit for anything and it just takes longer for me to die.
I believe most understood that.

actually, i took it to mean the OP wasnt using roles properly and by "going defensive" he meant he was using block and turtling.
you dont really hit things while your blocking.
also the defensive role reduces your energy and increases cost of powers, it doesnt reduce damage from guardian role. (but would appear to compared to the offensive role, as that boosts your attack)
