I love this game and all but the severe lack of sound effects such as walking, swimming, jumping, and the list goes on and on. Where are the sounds? am i missing something? i have all audio on max, turned off music to test if that was blocking the sound effects, and still nothing?
Do i need to buy a specific kind of speakers or a specific audio card or w/e?

I have the same problem, there are walking and swimming sounds but they are super low. Even with all the music and other affects lowered I can still barely hear them. I agree, without the sounds of footsteps and so forth it makes the game feel like its missing something.

Cryptic REALLY REALLY REALLY needs to make this a priority.
I just did the free weekend and this was one of the main reasons I didnt subscribe or in this case buy the game. Hear that Cryptic you lost some money.
I thought the graphics were pretty poor but I guess thats what you get when you make it console friendly. The textures just looked like Ninetendo from 10 years ago. Even after I got over that the game still felt lacking. It took me a couple of days to figure out it was the sound. No real fight noise. So I never felt immersed in the action. Powers have no bang. Well play any game with the sound turned off and you know. Being new I have no way to know if this is normal or a new bug.
I tried various settings before coming here and seeing a number of posts on the issue.
All of the sound is coming out of all 5 speakers. Except the character sounds. Those seem limited to the center speaker and then they are way under the music and ambiant sounds. Very muffled or barely audible. But man I can hear sirens in the distance.
This isnt an issue with our set ups. All other games work fime and even in CO the music is full on 5.1.
Bad audio combined with low end looking graphics made this a game a "No" for me

lol time for you to get a new graphic card then because it doesn't look like a n64 game. The game is quite pretty, perhaps one of the best mmos graphically.

Its the 'ol low graphics conundrum it seems. For reasons beyond my understanding Low graphics = Missing sounds
Seriously, crank them up for just a few moments and notice the difference. Very noticeable with skills like shotgun.

You hit the nail on the head there, Soul-Journ. The specific setting you want to turn up is "Visual FX Quality" so if you're having trouble running the game at high framerates, you can isolate that setting to turn up. It still may affect your performance, though.
There's a known issue where setting "Visual FX Quality" to Low or Medium will cause certain Power audio not to play. Most melee Powers are affected at the Low setting, and footsteps, Superjump, and Rocket Jump are affected at the Medium setting. (I'm going off memory here, so there may be a couple inconsistencies, but we have them logged in our bug database.) We're looking into potential solutions, but for now, setting Visual FX Quality to High should be a valid workaround for most folks.
Thanks!

Hey thanks for the response. I am back for the free weekend. Everything was already maxxed out and I still only heaar my powers muffleded thru the center speaker while ambiant sound is blaring over it. I did bump up the AA and after that I now no longer get any sound from my rocket boots. Go figure. I hear sounds thru all 5 speakes except my powers which is limited to the center.
Because the issue is still there I wont be blowing any money on this game this time either. Without decent sound the gameplay is just hollow.

No worries at all. There's an issue I'm trying to track down where power sounds are muffled even at high Visual FX Quality settings, but I haven't quite found a common thread yet. The five-speaker setup may be a good lead, I'll see if I can't follow up on that.
If you have a chance, feel free to submit a Bug Report next time you're on (There may be another Free Weekend in the future, though plans aren't yet finalized). Our tickets pull some system information, like your audio drivers / versions, and those may help identify which drivers / versions cause the issue. Updating your audio drivers may help as well, and whether it does or doesn't solve the issue would definitely help rule out another lead.
Thanks a bunch for the extra info on this issue, and sorry the original workaround didn't work out for you!

Thanks, I just had to reinstall the game and could not figure out where the sound went!
Could you please sticky this and tack it on the bug section in game under sounds/audio? I was getting rather ****ed about the sound problem.
Thanks for the info again!

This is definitely a real problem. I am constantly trying to adjust audio settings to compensate for poor sound. On my 5.1 set up it seems like the sound is out of phase. No matter what I do the sound just isn't right. I just installed STO and noticed how much better the audio was immediately.

You may not have the cause pinned down quite yet. I found that if I open the options menu, and kill something, my combat sound comes back. I only just recently developed the issue (it popped up yesterday for the first time after a ~ 228 mb patch), and stumbled across a fix that works for me.
I didn't touch any of the settings BTW. All I did was kill something while the options menu was open.

I've started having this problem after a recent patch too. I will try to kill something while having the options menu open.
Edit: Nope, that didn't help. Oh and VFX option is set to max already.

In the last few days I have suddenly, and almost completely lost sound. It started with extreme lag and rubberbanding, and now enemies attack me in virtual silence. It's like only a few of the sound effects are now willing to play at any given time!
I'm on a Dell M1730, Windows Vista x64. I tried removing it and reinstalling, but the sounds are still not there.
My problem started in this thread and is now an audio issue:

I tried reinstalling the Sigmatel Audio driver, but no joy. I can't play the game like this. First unbelievable lag, now no sound even after reinstalling.
Any ideas?

Never mind! I just stumbled upon the answer! I had visual effects on high, but the options menu was wrong. I flicked it on low, and then flicked it on high again... and now get my rocket boot sounds/landing etc back!
So that seems to be the answer for me. It was displaying high when set on medium or low, I guess.
