View Full Version : A Question to Satisfy My Curiosity

I am curious about the PRIMARY reason people play this game.
1) Becasue it is a new MMO.
or
2) Because it is a Superhero RPG.
I personally love the superhero genre, and I know that that is a huge factor in my love for the game. I am curious if those who are displeased are seeking more of an MMO experience or a superhero experience. If that makes any sense.

Primary? I like to play games where I advance in power and strength.
Secondary? Nothing much out there catching my eye for MMOs right now.

This.
CoX got really boring really fast. They started crap that nobody used (PVP was a wasteland and PVP zones were barren). Then cam the AE debacle (Why runmissions, just create SUPER XP EXPLODO content and power level your alts with it).
I was also tired of the Trinity there. This is fresh with new ideas people can't handle. People whine constantly about needing classes because they have been so programmed to having MMOs work like that.

If offered the choice of Champions offline or a new MMO in another genre, which would you choose?

sounds like your trying to get people to say they dont like the game
lets just leave it at the fact we are playing CO for a reason(i myself enjoy the game)
and other games do not really affect that fact(except for the fact most of us are not playing other games because of CO, or we are playing it AND them)

For me it's because it's one of the very very very very very very very very... ugh... very very very very very... very few MMOs that are not about fantasy with elves and magic.
(know that you can make elves here and there is magic but it's the whole fantasy setting that makes me throw up a bit in my mouth)
Chat needs a jumbogigantic laser!
So once another MMO with a better laser comes along I am out of here(maybe... might stay because I'm having fun).

I was looking for a vacation from WoW, and wanted to try an MMO that I had not tried before. Since I started out my "MMO life" in CoH and liked the genre, if not the game itself, I decided to give CO a try.

Neither have anything to do with why I play, why I stayed or why I bought the lifetime :P
It's because this is the first MMO I've played that truly felt like it made the casual and solo player welcome. Don't get me wrong, I love my Lotro but sometimes playing a "regular" MMO feels more like work, especially when you want to enjoy the cool stuff. I adore the fact that here I can play for an hour, sometimes less and sometimes more, and still accomplish important things. I don't have to raid full time to get good gear and I don't have to be a specific "class" to get a good group. I LOVE that. That's why I stay and play.

i am not trying to do that at all! I love the game!!
It seems to me that there is a big difference in play style and attitude between those who are playing to be heroic and those that are playing to be in another MMO. Both of course are comletely acceptable. No, not trying to bash anything or anyone.

Because, IMO of course, it's the best superhero game MMO on the market. I"m SO over fantasy MMOs. I'm not interested in any of the Sci-Fi MMOs on the market (AO was fun in it's time, and instanced missions were awe-inspiring at the time).
"Real life" games like APB and The Agency have some interest for me. I'm somewhat interested in TOR and STO. But mostly I'm in it for the capes and cowls.

Because it is a a 3D Classless Superhero MMO. The second thing is important, but the first is what made me come here from City of Heroes, and keeps me from going back. The newness or oldness of the gmae makes no nevermind to me - I still play Ultima Online.

It's vaguely interesting to me.
My biggest concern about STO is that they're going to try to do too much at launch.
I fault SW:G for a lot of things (and rightly so), but one thing they were smart enough to do was developing one "half" of the game, releasing it, then developing the other half (SW:G and Jump to Lightspeed). It sucked waiting for ship-to-ship combat, but in the end it was a good idea.
If they release half a ship game and half a ground game at launch, that would be bad.

No in the end it was a bad idea because they shot themselves repeatedly in the foot after getting both in. :)
Personally I waited until JTL before playing SWG because it just didn't interest me without ships. And as expected it was the part I liked best (though it did need alot of work). But I think Trek really does need the ships at launch, because most of Trek's 'action' was ship based. I think you need the ships to capture the feel of the shows.
Star Wars has enough fantasy combat element to make it okay without ships. But I'm still hoping the New Republic doesnt make us wait on it.

Fantasy is such a worn out theme.Seriously, how many swords and boards MMOs exist right now?
TONS!
They keep pumping them out because they are all trying to capture that WoW market. No other reason.
If I want fantasy, I'll play PnP D&D, Zelda, Dragon Warrior, or a good early Final Fantasy (1, 2, 3, or 4 - got them all at home now)

I hear what you're saying, and if there were a "side" to put out first, it'd be ships.
I just have major concerns that the two halves of the game will only be half-done. Half a ship game + half a ground game <> a whole MMO.

I play it because I love custom-tailored escapism, I won't lie.
The whole idea of superheroes is that an author can take an idea and weave just about any kind of superhero they can imagine around that, and in a superhero Universe, even the least super types make their mark just by being so very individual. There's more to the whole superhero thing than just the powers. It's about being bigger than life, it's about getting away with gross levels of individuality and eccentrity that "normal" society wouldn't find acceptable, it's about having fun with the most untamed version of yourself.
And to me, that's what comic books have always been about, as writers bring a lot of themselves into their comic books. Read anything by Grant Morrison and you'll see what I mean by that. The whole format is very expressive, and it's a kind of grand escapism. That selfsame escapism, where the player is the author, exists to a strong degree in Champions Online. That's why I play it. Yes, because it's a superhero MMO, but I had to stress what a superhero MMO means to me.
I also play it because...
1.) It's not a doomed World, you do save it, frequently!
2.) The powers look and feel simply marvellous.
3.) It's all so very bright and vibrant, yet without being patronising.
4.) It's cheesy and camp, I love cheesy and camp! MOAR!
Oh and... it IS pretty awesome being able to fly! *cackles.* Sorry Ex.

I think we'll have to wait and see how it plays out in beta. PC Gamer did a hands on playthrough a few issues back that got me very excited about how it all worked together. (and for the record I'm not much of a Trek fan, I prefer SW)
On the other hand, while I love SW and Bioware, I do worry that The Old Republic won't be able to deliver on what they're promising (on the level of story driven continuity based on classes, etc.) It will be an amazing game if they deliver. But it seems like way too much when multiplied by all possible class combinations, etc. I worry that some classes/stories will be very well done and others entirely half-arsed because they run out of time. Which is pretty typical for Bioware, much as I love them. There were alot of abandoned/half done plots in the KOTR series which was sad.
Eeep I think I veered wildly off topic on this post. If only I had a starship.

Thanks for taking the time to write all that. It is more than just the powers - Matt Wagner comes to mind, and many Batman stories that are pure detective work and fisticuffs . . .
I love the superhero genre, and it seems that the people who are disappointed here are the hardcore MMO players, not the hardcore comics fans. Not to say that this won't work the other way around - enjoying the game is also a great way to gain an interest in comics.
I find that when i run into a comics fan in-game, i can often tell by their actions and their style of chat. Many times you can tell by the costume/name combo! It is good to find birds of a feather.

I think both of those games might get a pass from me for 6-12 months. I'll still have CO and maybe DCU to keep me going until launch + 12 mos.

I personally despise the Superhero theme, especially since they went all Batman on it and made it a big campy joke. I don't even allow people into my guild if their character has the spandex tights and cape thing going on :p
What I love though is massive customization, high-action gameplay, controller support and a modern setting.

I just tried the game and liked it. I was in the market for an MMO...I do like that it's new because it means I can get in at the ground level, I like that it's superhero based and particularly love that it's based on a pen and paper roleplaying became because the quality of source material is likely to be several cuts above, but neither of these were major factors in my decision making process...I like lots of different genres and I'm not averse to trying older games. The Cryptic name was worth something too, because I'd previously played City of Heroes and found it to be really good fun.

1. A futuristic jetbooted ninja who burns people's faces off using her boosters.
2. An ex-thief driven to heroism by guilt for their former deeds, who also shoots things and generates force fields thanks to a stolen relic.
3. A kryptonian who was never actually adopted after crash-landing on earth and consequently was raised by hobos, who fights crime by beating people to death with park benches and trash cans.
I mean, come on. That's awesome. You can make absolutely anything you want in this game, and then build a playstyle around it.

lol - all three are win!
I also think it is cool to have 'characters' rather than 'toons' (although I generally call them toons for simplicity). When asked about WoW, I say i have a troll priest, dual spec. But my CO characters have a more fleshed out feel, their own backstory.
p.s. Some backgrounds:
I have a deep-sea creature called Depth Charge who was altered into a sentient being by a Korean undersea nuclear test.
A badass commando who came home from foreign war to find that she was obsessed with justice but pi**ed off by the legal system.
A lead singer for a band who wouldn't go payola and was electrocuted on-stage by a rigged micrphone his manager set up. The result was a superhero, of course . . .
I find this to be fun and immersive. I know, I know, I'm a geek . . .
