Besides, Cryptic was never hiding the fact that the game would incorporate microtransactions.

I wonder when a Blizzard fan is going to come in here complaining about MT's while he is secretly wearing a WoW T shirt and hat, while drinking a WoW mountain dew.

Indeed, Im waiting for my Bling Gnome that can eat unwanted gear and pass it out as resources.
It worked for the farce based dungeon runners, so it should work for the farce based champions..... oh wait.

Renames cost $$$ usually because they have to do it manually. Though I'll bet Cryptic has got it automated and is charging regardless.

I'm sure you could get a GM to fix your name for you if there's a space in front of it.

Well, two points on this. One is that most MMOs that use MTs do not ALSO charge a full monthly fee. Two is that, as someone said before, the custom of charging for name changes was to cover the cost of manually making the change, not to perform a simple automated task and get your money.
Up until recently we could change our names by changing the costume name we are wearing but I am having problems getting that to work now. So I guess we now have no option at the time being, until Cryptic gets this implemented.

Erhm, no, the reason name changes cost money is it's your identifying characteristic. They don't want people to be able to exploit, grief, and otherwise annoy other players, then just change names and get away with it. Since handles are more identifying in this game though, this reason applies less here.

So basically you just shot down your own arguement and are supporting how the MT's not really needed? Im confused.

I didn't have an argument. I was just pointing out that asserting that name changes cost money in other games because they were done manually is silly. They haven't been manual for a pretty long time.

Yup, they only said you would never be able to buy stat changing items. I am fine with this. I love CO and would happily buy stuff in the C-store...at least give us the option soon Cryptic!

So last night I got a GM to change one of my character's names... Just submitted a "behavior" report, saying "Hey, is there any way I can get my name changed?"
The GM that answered told me that he could do it as long as it wasn't copyrighted, offensive, etc etc etc... I told him the new name I wanted (I went from "Bolt" to "El Tormenta") and he did it right there. Took about a half hour for the whole conversation.
(and before anyone asks) I double checked my bank statement, no charge.

This game allowing name changes isn't really a question of whether it's currently an automated or manual service or whether the Devs are trying to "trick" us out of some extra money or not.
The key reason why games typically charge for this service is to make sure people don't abuse the privelige. The simple idea is that if they make it cost actual real life money then people will only change names when they truly want or need to. This keeps people from exploiting or griefing this.
I'm not surprised that GMs will change people's names right now on a case-by-case basis. They aren't seriously expecting to make significant amounts of money for their upcoming service. They just want to make sure people don't abuse it. I suspect they let you have your one name change because that's the only one you've ever asked for. I'll bet if you asked for a name change every day they'd stop doing it "for free". ;)
