View Full Version : Costume: any tips for making a better female face?

Does anyone have any tips/tricks to making a more traditional, Jim Lee / David Finch style comic hottie? What are the settings you tweak?

So far I've found that going with the Slim Face, reducing eye size, and then applying the Makeup - Enhanced option in the costume creator makes a big difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Wear a mask?

I do everything you mentioned and try not to let it bother me, looking at the back of her head the whole time anyway.

Don't know about females, but I have found male chars look better with a mask than without it. Even when the mask is Open and his face can be seen, they have softer and prettier facial features than without it.

It's all about playing with the sliders, with a bit of work you can achieve a lot of differences.

However though they are sliders not all of them neccessarily seem to work as a progressive scale, some have a series of different looks set on the slider, or st least that how it seems.

You can even with use of skintone and a lot of playing with the eyesliders make an asian style face. I'm still having problems getting a convincing male afro-american face though.

I find that making sure to minimize the muscle slider is a must, and slightly lowering lips and hand size helped quite a bit, also using heroic or average stances and the pleasant facial feature really helps me with an atractive female character.

The lack of eyelashes is kind of weird, and the big wax lips on the default female doesn't help either. Starting with the default, I always drag eye size, eye height, & mouth width down to 15-25%, then whatever makeup with eyeshadow to make up for the eyelashes. Nose width up a bit, chin size & width down a bit, and things can get fairly close.

Ditching the "vixen" stance and freakish back muscles comes first though, yeah. The ditzy airhead idle animation just makes characters look constantly grossed out by everything.

There is an option to add eyebrows.

EDIT: Sorry misread your post. MORE CAFFEINE!

Yeah, the mouth size is typically waaaay to big imo for both genders. Cranking that down alone to about 20% is very helpful.

I dont think I've ever heard Image artists referred to as 'traditional' before...

I'll second the importance of the muscle slider for both men and women. Also don't shy away from things like leg length for an over all picture. Solely face wise it just comes down taking a lot of time on that first face and making it a generic face that looks good. Save it and then use it for the basis to work upon for each character. Your characters will tend to look like sisters, but it has saved me a lot of hours and unless you knew the other character well someone else couldn't tell. Since it if a face I like it doesn't matter if I end up with a "family resemblance".

You know what, I think someone (maybe I'll do it if I'm bored) should make about 10 or 15 different female faces using the default costume (minus the irritating mask) that look good. Then post them somewhere and name them stuff like: Female Face X, where x is a number between 1 and 15 :P. That way, anyone can just hit load and select a face to work with.

I actually ended up putting on the art deco piece that sits under the eyes across the nose and sweeps up the sides of the face, for my one primary female character.

This is purely to give her a straight nose! I hate the sunken in one that can't be really adjusted much.

You can see it in my avatar to the left when Guardia scrolls around.

I wish there was an option to adjust the angle of the nose and not just the length and width.

Also, why can guys have narrowed eyes, and not girls?

actually you can make a very beutiful face. if you take the time and fiddle with the slides. but remember to stay away from extremes (slinding the bars to far to the left and or right)

You're doing it wrong. I manage to make my female faces look extremely exquisite. All it takes is usage of sliding and makeup. If you don't do these things, expect a butt ugly heroine. The right eye color does a surprising change on the facial look. Sliding eye sizes and shapes helps alot. I was able to make a little girl. You can't be lazy in the costume creator.

I also find that setting the hero's attitude to Determined gives the femal characters a more natural looking mouth.

I think the Enhanced Makeup really adds a lot to keeping the face from looking bland, though just careful tweaking of the sliders can yield some pleasant results.

Its not a bad idea and I'm sure some would thank you for it.

I cannot show you my female faces as they are copyright Cryptic Studios, but yes, you have to use the sliders and save the one you like the most

You can't get the same 'I'm so stoned!' squint but you can get the quite narrow by adjusting the eye size and eye height (not eye position). In fact you can get a few very different looks just by playing around with eye size and eye height.

I also find that setting the hero's attitude to Determined gives the femal characters a more natural looking mouth.

Be careful with that though as the expressions will reset to default while in-game sometimes and they will change expressions in certain animations so if you're character's face only looks good with one specific expression you're likely to really notice (and hate) everything that changes their expression :)

My suggestions:

1) Remember that everything is too wide when you're in the character creator, the aspect ratio is a little off (as of yesterday) so your character will look a bit more slim and their face a bit less wide once you're actually in the game.

2) Many of the sliders for the face and body are not simply linear scale adjustments. For example the mouth size will adjust to width between about 25-75%, above or below those limits will adjust the fullness of the lips without further changing the width. Play around and try them at min, max and some spots in between before trying to seriously adjust them.

3) Darker skin tones will make the face look more smooth in the game because the shadows will be less dramatic. Lighter skin tones will have the opposite effect. Makeup can be used to fine tune effect like sunken eyes.

4) Hair style will have a substantial impact on your characters face. Try to pick a hair style you like before editing the face and then once you're happy with the face try out a few different hair styles to see the effect.

It's pretty limited currently, but with a little creativity you can get some very different looking faces that aren't horrible.

My quick tip:

For both males and females, but especially for females, I find the default (starting) mouth width much too wide. I always narrow it up by quite a bit, and it looks far better in-game when you do that.

So I decided to look , really look, at the faces today. To be honest I always just stuck with the default face and spent my time on the costume. However I too was never happy with the faces, I just never bothered to look :)

But I looked today, and now I almost wish I hadn't. The reason the faces look so bad is because the default face is completely dis-proportioned! Even worse is you don't have enough control to fix all the problems. You can only fix some of them :(

The proportions and positioning of features on a Human face always follows certain rules, and comic book drawings generally follow the same rules with a tad bit of exxageration in certain areas for that "Marvel" feel :)

The eye line should be in the exact middle of the head. One half of the way from top of the skull to bottom of the chin.
The size and placement of the eyes should be so that the head is five eyes wide.
The top of the ears should be equal to the level of the eyebrows, and the bottom of the ears just SLIGHTLY below the bottom of the nose.
If you draw a line straight down from the corners of the eyes, you should be right on the edges of the nose. Edges of the nostril to be more precise. The widest part of the nose.
Lastly, the bottom lip should be at the level of where the skull curves in for the jaw.

Now look at the default face. The eyes are too high and too big. The ears are too low, and the mouth is too high up.

Unfortunately you can't fix all this :( You can move the eyes down, and make them smaller but then they'll be too far towards the outside of the face. Other that that, I can't figure out a way to fix any of the other problems :(
