Had an oldschool thread that I would make giving players some not too well known information about things. Here i'll be revising that thread and giving out some info about how to play the market.
With any MMO there are a few things you need to understand when dealing with an economy.
Q: What is the currency of the game? Also how much is that currency actually worth?
With Champions Online we deal in resources with regular, national and international (Copper, Silver, and Gold). *Get the feeling they might add in a "Galactic/Universal" currency being platinum down the road*
At the moment things are pretty decent and things seem to be fair, but that can change based upon players. (Right now a silver or national currency will buy you some decent stuff on the market)
Q: What are items worth to you, to the consumer and to the vendor?
This is one thing that many players will miss-interpret, miss understand, and/or plain not care about. However if you want to earn ALOT of coinage in the game you should care.
1. Vendor Amount: Items will be worth a piddly amount to a vendor, but sometimes this isn't a bad thing. Items can be worth nothing to a person not even for using as fodder for crafting for components. Taking items to a vendor should be your LAST resort.
2. Item Worth To Consumer: You need to figure out what the vendor amount is worth then tac on a small fee that you feel is appropriate. Now the problem here is to one person an item is worth 25 national (Silver) while to another person it maybe worth 1 Internationl (Gold) which creates problems. (This is tempered by the 3rd item below)
3. Item Worth To You: As mentioned above you need to tac on a small fee to make it feel like you are earning a decent amount. Sadly this can lead people to become greedy or just down right foolish. Some people will make an item that is worth a small amount be worth 10x-15x what it really is so caution must be taken. Make sure to judge the item appropriately then fairly.
Q: How long do I wait with an item on the broker?
This is probably the hardest part, but a friend from another MMO taught me that you must be very patient. Sadly the amount of time to wait is hard to put into a specific amount, but generally you want to wait atleast 1 week. By that time if the item hasn't sold consider lowering the price a little bit reposting it.
You don't want to undercut yourself, but you want to make sure you arn't trying to scam somebody on a piece of garbage.
Tips:
1. Playing the Market: If you have TRUE patience you can look up the name of the item you want to sell on the broker. This can be VERY tedious when dealing with so many item names in champions, but it can be rewarding. You can see what your competition is selling theirs for and you can compete with them or try to undercut them by a tade. One thing to be sure about is not to gouge prices and put yours at such a low price it creates problems.
2. Even selling: For a quick note dealing with CO figure out what the vendor is paying, figure out the level of the item and if it's science, mysticism, or arms. Once you do that you can add in a fixed specific price to sell it at. Generally I will sell low quality items level 1-10 no matter the craft type for 5-6 silver. Level 11-19 items will will generally sell for 12-15 and so on and so forth.
3. Quality Of the Item: It's sweet that you have a SUPER AWESOME !EE7 l007 drop, but some people may just not be interested in your item. Just because it says "unique" in purple doesn't mean it's worth the big bucks. It could just down right be vendor trash and you'll pretty much get that for it.
4. Statistics, Statistics, Statistics: Going hand in hand with #3 if an item is low quality, but has interesting stats like 3 dex, 3 ego ,2 energy def, 2 physical defense, and 1 offense you might have a winner. The vendor might pay 5 National silver for it, but it could really be worth something like 40-50 national silver. This leads into the 5th tip which is for CO.
5. Know your Classes: What classes need what statics can really help out and let you gear your sales to them. Already finding out Fire class people use Presence/Endurance while Munitions toons like Dexterity and Ego. Having an item with High Dexterity + high Resistances and a bit of offense can go to a might toon or Munitions toon. (As the saying goes another person's trash is another person's treasure)
6. Components: With CO we have to break items down into components or go out hunting. If you have problems selling items to adventuring/PvPing folk lower the price a bit and try to consider the crafting market. Some folks like the aspect of crafting no matter the MMO and will make sure they or their guild/super groups crafters are well supplied with raw materials.
Alrighty that's not all the tips and tricks out of my magical hat, but hopefully this should give some folks ideas on how to play the market. Here's hopin you can make some nice coinage so you can afford some nice stuff for yourselves. :D
