I was reading the history of the Black Mask on a load screen and it stated the first one fought for American Independence in 1765? Does the Champion Universe have an alternate history where the War of American Independence starts at 1765?

IRL it started 1775 declaration of independence was 1776 which was the actual establishment of a war of independence and not just complaining about no taxation without representation.

Can you shed some light on this?

The black mask was part of an underground revolutionary organisation (the sons of liberty) who took part in acts of sabotage against the British prior to the war. It is also noted that he and his compatriots where instrumental in causing the events in Boston.
