Surprisingly, not a 'I quit thread'
I'm curious if anyone knows what happens to an account once the sub runs out- although I'm planing on renewing my sub to the game, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do so before my time runs out on the 5th.
I know in CoH characters weren't deleted- is this the same here?

Your characters will be fine - I've played many, many MMOs and not a single one of them has ever deleted characters, that I can recall.

Your characters will be fine. No MMO will delete characters with the hopes of the person coming back to the game.

Didn't CoX do this at one point just to free up names? That isn't a worry here since it is all based on your global handle. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Final Fantasy used to delete after a few months but they're about the only MMO I know of that ever did. I'm about 99.99% positive your characters won't be deleted if you don't renew right away.

I think they did but even then I want to say they only touched the accounts that had been closed over a year at that point.

I have also heard that Warhammer does (or at the very least did). Read a complaint on Massively about how a subscriber got his characters wiped after leaving for a few months...
Bear in mind that it is 3rd hand knowledge and it seems plain stupid.

I wouldn't worry. You'll be fine. Doubly so with the global @name system. No need at all to free names up on the server.

Nope what CoX did was mark the names of any character under specific lvl ( something makes me think six) on accounts that had been inactive for a set period of time as free.
What this meant is if there was a character under lvl6 on a account that had been inactive for 2 years and some new player came along and used the same name the new player would get the name and the inactive character would become generic hero XXX (and were issued a free rename token) but if no new player came along and used the inactive characters name then the owner of the inactive account could return 3 years later and there lvl 6 would be there waiting for them.
of course as we can have multiple characters all with the same name running out of names is a non issue only way i could see them deleting characters was if they needed to free up data base space

I think they did it several times. They deleted all characters under lvl 5 who had been inactive for 6 months or more. Because a lot of people made alts to grab good names at startup and never played the characters. Then they left the game bu the names were still out of circulation. They decided that if your character was under lvl 5 and you hadnt played him/her in 6 months you wouldn't care anyway.
just my 2 cents
