Seems a lot people don't know about custom channels. Custom channels allow for users to talk across instances and even across servers. You are currently limited to only being subscribed to 5 channels at the moment.
Joining a custom channel
There are a couple methods to join a custom channel
Through the chat options - right click on one of the chat tabs to bring up chat options, then click on the channels tab. Tab in the name of the channel and click join.
In chat - type "/channel_join "channel name". For any inline command like this you have to put quotes around the channel name if it has a space.
Chatting in a custom channel
There are several methods to type to a custom channel
Set it to your default channel In the lower left corner of the chat window is a drop down menu. Select the channel from there
Send a one-off message There are several commands to use including /c, /chan, and /channelsend. All of them work the say. Type the command followed by the chat name and then the message. For example /chan LFG LFM Andrith would send the message "LFM Andrith" to the LFG channel.
Bind a key You can bind a key to start a chat to a particular channel using the bind and Startchatwith commands. For example "/bind control+m Startchatwith /c "Global Cheese" " would bind control+m so you can start chatting with the Global Cheese channel.
Bind a key to change the channel You can also bing a key to change your default channel using the /bind and /channel_setcurrent. For example /bind control+m channel_setcurrent "Global Cheese" would bind the control+m to change your channel to the Global cheese channel.

Yea, our guild found the cap was set at 250 members. Alts or Mains, which stinks. So we had to divide up into 2 divisions and disable guild chat in both. That way everyone is forced to use the Custom Channel to chat to the guild.
It works well.

There is an option to put a motd and a description for the channel in the channel admin tab. However, I can't determine where you see the motd, either automatically or forced with a command line. Anyone have info on how to use the motd in globals properly?
Like many, we have several SGs joined by a common global channel, and I would rather post one motd to cover them all rather than having to hop to 4 SGs to make sure everyone sees the messages.

I believe both descriptions and motd are useless at this moment. Hell, last time I tried to change the motd, neither I or the channel's owner could.

I think you can see the description by hovering the mouse over the channel name on the right screen.

Yes, 5 is the max number.
The others are low for several reasons, I believe. Lack of knowledge about custom channels. People creating several custom channels with the same intent because they don't know about the others. The 5 channel limit. I know I have left several chats because I am at the limit.

It might be a good idea if we attempted to consolidate some of the channels by declaring one or the other to be the primary trade, lfg, global, etc channel. It's still a good idea to list them all but since this is the first thread of it's kind we are in the position to keep this orderly. Possibly base the decision off their current population or how easy it is to remember?
also, don't forget the mighty takofane_spawn channel

There are plenty of factors to consider when marking one has a primary channel for it's purpose. Size, ability to stay on topic, ease to remember are all included. Should I ever get around to separating by purpose I might look into this more. Of course right now this (and Winged's version on the general board) fall off the front page quite easily and are not as helpful as I would like.
Also, I left takofanes_spawn off the list because it is really just a temporary channel and gets mentioned enough both on the forums and ingame as is. If it sticks around after Bloodmoon, then it will be a different matter.

Bind a key to change the channel You can also bing a key to change your default channel using the /bind and /channel_setcurrent. For example /bind control+m channel_setcurrent "Global Cheese" would bind the control+m to change your channel to the Global cheese channel.
I love this command, found this "setcurrent" command while filtering the the CMD list and things have been so much easier ever since.

I'm copying a post I made in another thread about the all-instance zone chat, I figure you can add it here if you want - it'd be a way to give people a chance to communicate and ask for help in a specific map but across all instances of it. Pretty much, it'd be like making the current zone chats available after they apply the fix to make zone chat normal again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, so since I finally had enough time to mess around with it, I decided to try making these global-zone channels, in preparation of when they decide to fix the current zone chats to only be instance-chat. Let me know what I can do to improve these - the messages of the Day I made as something to give you an indication of that channel's currently active.
Zone ---------- Chat Channel Name
Desert ------- Desert
Canada ------ Canadia (yeah, I know it's not "Canada," but the client crashed on me and now canada's showing as someone else owning it)
Millenium City ----- City
Monster Island ------ Monster
Lemuria ------ Lemuria
Like I said, these are something if you guys want to you can subscribe to and use at will, you can subscribe to all of them and just toggle them off and on when you enter different zones and they (should) stay active on all characters on an account after you join them until they're destroyed. Thanks.

the global and globalchat channels are useless. globalchat is empty and bereft of members (meaning no one even has it turned on). global you are already a member of really and it doesn't get much use either. both of these for some reason are impossible to leave and since you can only join 5 channels at a time these permanently reduce the number of custom channels you can join. you have been warned.
can we please get a dev to look into this issue. other custom channels i want to join, but can't because of the 5 limit, and these 2 are already taking up slots.
addednum:
i think we should separate the global and lfg channels from the sto ones.
- channels created: Champions (CO specific global chat) and lfChampions (CO specific lfg chat)

I am thinking about making my own social one and invite all friends there. Good people meets good people there and I can do my LFG rants to people I really want to lair about with :)
Or IS there some sort of command, like "tellFriends", anybody have any clue?
Gotta add the Trade and LFG channels.
