So one of my favorite things in CoH was the costume constest held in the forums. I would like to carry that tradition to our great new game here.

Rules:
1. Make a toon that follows the theme.
2. Submit screen shots in this thread before the end of the contest.
3. Decisions are final and can not be contested. I will decide the winner of the contest at the end and send them a PM for details on delivering their in-game prize.
4. Have fun!

Prize: It's rare and can only be found a very certian way. I'll surpirse the winner with the prize at the end of the contest.

So here is our first theme ....

STEAMPUNK
Make a toon of any size, shape, color that you think best fits the Steampunk theme.

Since it might take a while to get this one going, we'll let the first one go for two weeks. This means all posts must be submitted before 9/30.

Good Luck!

You're making it too easy for me after I already posted him in the other costume thread ;)

The least I could do was take a fresh screenshot.

Here's Steam Powered Rat:
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p272/ButstonFreem/CO%20chars/steam.jpg

Bio I could squeeze into the limited ingame space:
Dr. Lester is nothing short of a genius. However he missed the technical advancement and all his machines are still steam powered. His newest invention is a prototype steam powered super armor. Still too dangerous for human use, his highly intelligent lab rat (which lately teached itself to speak) is running field tests. When the Qularr attacked, Steam Powered Rat was right in the middle of it and the power armor could finally show it's full potential in actual combat.

Dr. Lester (until I think of a better name) is also his future nemesis. He goes crazy and tries to turn millenium city into a steam powered utopia, minus the people.

Although I'm a lot less entusiastic about this character since I discovered that somebody else had, independently, nearly the exact same idea (minus the steampunk theme).
Also tunneling characters level awfully slow, but he looks so cute jumping into the ground ;)

Edit: fixed the screenshot

This is great, I love steampunk so much that I've decided to break my self-imposed rules against posting in online forums. My main toon that I've played since the beta is steampunk, as is one of my main alts that I created recently. Let me see if I can figure out how to post pics of them correctly:

Hopefully that worked out ok. I'm loving seeing your steampunk designs so far.

Incidentally, this probably isn't the right place for this, but while all you steampunk inclined people are in one place I can't resist. Does anyone know of a steampunk supergroup in Champions. I'd love to join up. If not, is anyone interested in forming one?

Sky Ranger - Alexandra Sky is not of our Earth. In fact she is not even of our dimension. Alex is an Advanced Human Replica Clockwork (AHRC) from an alternate universe that is still in the 1890's. The first of her kind, Alex was put into service as a special operative of Her Majesties Air Corp. After two years of loyal service Alex, called Sky Ranger by the public, was called to stand before the Queen in reward. It was at that time that one of the Empire's most determined foes, Professor Radium attacked. Sky Ranger was able to defeat his plot to kill the Queen but the Professor had a backup plan. He detonated a device that had been hidden within the Palace! When Sky "awoke" she found herself on a repair table in Doctor Silverback's lab. Now, trapped in a world not her own, she continues to fight for justice and hopes that one day she can find a way home.

Key Features of the AHRC:
- Advanced high performance clockwork gear system that allows for realistic human movement, increased reaction time and increased strength.
- Miniature Analytic Engine Brain. Gives the AHRC a thinking capacity faster than a human.
- Synth Skin - Derived from reversed engineered Martian technology. Life like feel with increased resistance to damage.
- Tesla Reactor - a micro-power cell that generates an electrical field which allows the AHRC to function.
- Aetheric Flight Pack - Backpack unit that allows the AHRC to defy gravity using a mineral salvaged from a Martian war machine. This mineral draws upon the aether to neutralize gravity in a tight field around the wearer of the pack.
- Marconi Shortwave Communicator - built in shortwave communications system that allows for sending and receiving of radio signals over long distances.

Features unique to AHRC-01X "Alexandra Sky"
- Unlike other HRC models, Alexandra has exceeded the initial programming of her Analytic Engine. The Babbage institute theorizes that her awareness and ability to achieve human emotion is due to an anomaly in the Analytic Engine's programming caused by the use of Martian technology and the experimental Tesla Reactor.

-Alexandra carries two Colt Peacemakers that were gifted to her by Buffalo Bill Cody after she saved his life in a train robbery. These Peacemakers have been retooled to charge each round with an aetheric field. This allows each bullet to pass through energy fields and increases their damage potential.

He started as a vague costume idea I was tinkering around with, but I like him so much he's now my main character. Ladies and gentlemen, I present Otto Selfwinding. (http://www.champions-online.com/rate_my_champion/1035181)

Otto was built to serve as a butler for the infamous Mad Duke of Moorsburough. When angry townsfolk stormed the castle and put the Duke's head on a pike, Otto suddenly found himself homeless and unemployed. He spent several decades traveling the world, working odd jobs and improving himself. Recently he decided to get into the hero business for his own inscrutable reasons.

Here's a screenshot (http://www.box.net/shared/x3zt0xx0g0) of Otto in flight.

Here is Grapple (http://www.box.net/shared/d39yyra4z2), who I'm thinking of using as Otto Selfwinding's nemesis.

Grapple was a dungeon guard for the Mad Duke. The Duke's final instructions to him were to destroy all of the castle's automatons, because he didn't want to share the secrets of their construction. Only Otto succeeded in escaping, but Grapple will never tire of tracking him down.

So now I'll give the top toons and two honorable mentions:

Honorable Mentions:

Steam Powered Rat by Butson
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...hars/steam.jpg

What a great concept! Obviously the backpack fits our goal. However, for some reason my focus is drawn to the oversized hands. They fit perfectly with what I think a cyborg mouse would have for hands. Great toon.

Nick Chopper by personae
http://forums.champions-online.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5233&d=1254248687
A+ for presentation and story. Both add a huge amount to this toon. I really liked the how you mixed the steampunk bracer, shoulder pads and boots with pants and a shirt. You wouldn’t think something that simple would make a robot toon stand out but it really does.

Now for the top Five (in reverse order):

#5. Earl Theodore Gooding by Ifrit
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/6133/steampunk.jpg
I loved the use of the military shirt and flintlocks. Combine that with the traditional backpack and authentic name and you have a steampunk character no one can doubt.

#4. Boilerplate by Loki_Liesmith
http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac83/JKorber/Boilerplate.jpg
Again great presentation. Perfect coloring and name. But the thing that made this toon stand out the most was the body shape and how it complemented the enlarged shoulders and arm accessories. Great work, Loki.

#3. Colonel Brass by Loki_Liesmith
http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac83/JKorber/Brass.jpg
I really liked the first outfit. This one was a very serious contender for first place. Goggles on the derby hat, perfect brown colors for the suit and finish it off with a super cool beard! Very nice work here. I really can’t see how you can improve on this one.

#2. Asimov by Squidbot
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/linvuiet/CHampions/Asimovx4.jpg
I was really surprised that this one did not win. Everyone who sees it can’t help but be amazed. I really like the original costume the best. The last two are missing the charm that the first costume has and the silver isn’t quite a steampunk color. If anything you might try to add some wood colored pieces to really help him pop.

And the winner is:

Pneuman Cogswallop by rudegato
http://imgur.com/bKjvT.png

Wow. Great name but this toon *looks* fun to play! What a perfect “gentlemen’s’ robot” I can hear his mocking now as he punches a dinosaur in the face. Those giant red bracers mixed with the oversized hands wearing red gloves are perfect. Love the mustache but the monocle is actually pretty unique. Great job being unique but sticking with a theme.

The prize was going to be an inborn tenacity (DMG reduction item from my pre-order) but I just found out tonight that I can’t give it away. I will contact rudegato and find a proper prize for winning.

Whew … that was a lot of work judging and deciding who won. Full details on the next contest to be posted very soon.

Thanks for the compliments on Colonel Brass and Boilerplate!

I couldn't agree more with the winner. I thought Asimov was the clear winner too (Squidbot, you're awesome) until I saw Pneuman Cogswallop. He's just fantastic. Hands down the best toon I've seen in the game so far. I tip my hat to you rudegato. Job well done.

Thanks for running the contest Adogg. It's a really good opportunity to see what people are doing with the fantastic costume creator. I have a lifetime subscription to this game, and I'll be monitoring your contest threads for as long as you're so kind to run them.

Good job everyone.

I've just seen an almost identical level 1 Asimov :(

At hearing the mention of the name for a second time, I just researched the name Asimov and brought this up. I'm honestly a bit upset that you'd say that my character was identical, being that after seeing you're toon, I think there are some pretty distinct differences. I do apologize though, for any similarities, and I see that this is going to be a recurring problem for me, as you were the second person to tell my character that...

Anyways, I'd appreciate it if you could drop me a line in-game about it, and we can sort it out. Again, sorry to see that you feel like I cloned your char, despite my not knowing this thread even existed. ><

Hey there. Its not that I've never found the forums (I've been playing for about 8 months now, since CB), its just that I don't frequent them much. But yeah, nice to see you again and its good to finally see what you were talking about. Anyways, I'm going to lay off the posting here because I don't wanna derail the costume contest thread here in any way, but drop me a PM or /tell if you've got something to talk to me about and/or say. =P

Very nice toon. He would probably have received an hornorable mention. He reminds me of the dad from Psyche on USA (Friday nights). It's the guy from LA law and he is a retired police officer. When I see this toon I think of a steampunk version of a keystone cop. Great work!

Wow!

I'm so glad you guys like him so much!

Originally my friend wanted to make a "legendary british boxer" and he told me his concept for Burlington Haymaker. I thought, well no world traveling Brit should be complete without a butler. Originally he looked much more like aasimov, but i decided he would be more fun to play if he had a more dynamic chassis.
he's a TON of fun to play. Righteous Fists as an energy builder, mostly might powers, and Rocket jump for an apporpriately stodgey travel form :D I only wish this game had the /teabag command from CoH

here's a shot of the 2 of them saving the city from some rather uncooth bugs. :D

Personally I agree with a new thread, but it doesn't matter really since this is just for fun.

Golden Age Comic book super heroes mostly don't have a certain look, I have done a lot of research on the different Golden Age Heroes and you would be shocked how similar they are to even the modern age heroes. as far as looks go. with this said their is a major difference the first difference is that the golden age heroes where all Patriots First, and they preferred to arrest but still killed many a villain. One of the reasons for so many Comic book resets.
With this said I have a Golden Age Hero that I play daily. He is A former United States Marine who was born with the soul of a demon who is seeking salvation and when on a mission he was exposed to something that released his demonic half. (may not seem so golden age until you start looking up bio's of golden age heroes and you will find that there are a few with similar pasts)

ok for his look I was going for three very different looks.

It's still early, and I believe multiple entries were deemed acceptable - so my preliminary concept is...

Shining Star (http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/92/l_4ee1b63b1841455eafe36b83c18e4747.jpg)

A mild mannered airforce mechanic who suffered a severe electric shock. As a side effect he became an extremely efficient conductor, conduit, and manipulator of electrical energy. His weakness is being relatively mortal. His body is as vulnerable to damage as most other people. He can generate magnetic shields using his electricity, but only if he's aware of and able to react to an impending threat. Additionally, dousing his hands with water, while temporarily boosting his strength, causes him to deplete his energy more quickly. His most helpful piece of equipment is his helmet, which is made of an extremely conductive metal which naturally draws in electricity & is equipped with a small lightning rod.

edit: In retrospect, I think he resembles a certain hero a little too closely.

edit #2: looking back, it seems I'm the only person who keeps the thick black outline turned on in-game. To be honest, I only just learned I could turn it off. That said, I almost like it better turned on.

He survived the incident at Pearl Harbor, briefly going insane and being discharged. After regaining his sanity, the military refused to take him back. Now he fights injustice in his own way, as the super hero Buitch Sundance. While not "superhuman" in his physical abilities, Butch has extreme willpower and determination. Earl Campbell was an amateur radio operator, when he mistakenly overheard a secret transmission from Castro to Cruschev talking about an invasion of the United States. He tries to warn the authorities about the conversation, but no one would listen. Earl donned a suit, rigged his radio receiver and headphone and started investigating the plot. One night while, prowling the rooftops listening in on various radio transmissions, Earl was struck by lightning. There were no clouds and no storms, absolutely nothing to explain the phenomenom.

When Earl woke up 3 weeks later, he found that he could hear the radio transmissions without his equipment. He also found that he could channel the newly discovered "microwaves" into a beam of searing heat. Now with his new powers, Earl has been fighting crime as well as fighting for the USA when called.

So this costume entry for the Golden Age contest is a little different than my Steampunk entries, as it doesn't actually belong to any pre-existing toons. In fact, I haven't even decided whether to make a toon based on him yet. Currently, he's more or less created specifically for this contest.

I give you ... Kid Atomic.

http://s888.photobucket.com/albums/ac83/JKorber/?action=view&current=atomic.jpg

As you can see he's heavily influenced by the sci-fi superheroes of the Golden Age, which were in turn influenced by movie serials such as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

Anyway, I think he's kind of cool. I might play him in the game after all.

Tamerlane is the feared bodyguard of Col. Sir Hyram Sellers of Her Majesty Queen Victoria's Royal Army. After spending 10 years stationed in the orient, Sellers and Watts returned to Britain's shores. Tamerlane was almost killed in the November 5th riot when the Fawkes Society tried yet again to destroy Parliament. Col. Initially, Wilma was depicted as a cold, emotionless soldier and pilot, with little interest in Captain Rogers. However, along with some of the changes made to the storyline to accommodate a weekly series, Wilma Deering's character became warmer and more playful. Often, it was Wilma that came to the rescue of Buck, as opposed to the other way round. Erin Gray has commented that her role as Colonel Deering was an inspiration for many women who watched the program, particularly with regard to careers in the military. She also commented that she was aware of the highly sexualised one piece uniform she wore and its effect on the show's male audience. She was once described by Clive James as Wonder Woman with brains.

1. Batman Counts = an exceptionally skillful person
2. on the same note Colonel Wilma Deering from the 1979 series was Earths top fighter Pilot until Buck Rogers showed up with his Disco Music, and fancy flying .

The definition of superhero has recently been changed to include people like batman, I denounce it. You are either super or not. Batman can be a hero but not a "super" hero. I realy good pilot is not a "superhero".
All you are doing by including them in the definition is reducing what it really means to be a super hero.

I will say that the new "Iron Man" batman, who has high tech batsuits and gadgets like iron man, is more a super hero in the "mecha" sense.
Howeve the true batman was designed to fight thugs, with limited resources, no guns, no explosives, no powered grapling hook. IMO he is not a supre anything. He isnt even a good vigilanty since he wont kill anyone.

Under your definition almost 50% of what we would call a super hero wouldn't be, if we drop anyone who's superpowers come from created Items, or hard work then anyone in a power suit or with Items of power wouldn't be a superhero, only Aliens, Mutants, science changed, and some magicians.

so by your definition harry potter would be a super hero, but Green Lantern would be out of the Super Hero list.

---
and since we are on this the golden age super hero usually didn't have "Super powers" they where just Harder working and more heroic in nature then the typical person. when Superman first came out he had only a small list of powers bullet proof and flight, all the rest grew over time as the stories needed more "POW, BANG" and the same is true with every golden age hero that lasted

What? Batman is not a super hero?? Your serious? He may not have superpowers but by no means does he have limited resources.

I know that Batman has progressed technologically over time, as you mentioned.
But: LIMITED RESOURCES??? Really?? Have you seen the batcave? his super computer? His utility belt? Some of it got better over time, granted. However; Golden age batman did have a grappling hook, batarangs, martial arts, and the batcave. His greatest weapon however has not changed since day 1. Which is his keen intellect. I have seen batman (current and GA) drop supervillains and super heroes in the blink of an eye. The greatest weapon is the mind. And in his case, it proves so.

He does his homework, knows his foes, (and his allies) and knows how to take them down if need be.
When Ras Al Gul (spelled wrong I'm sure) got a hold of batman's info from the batcave computer he was easily able take down the entire JLA. All of which had Superpowers.

As far as him not being a good vigilante, I disagree. Just because he lives by a code and exercises restraint when apprehending villains does not mean he is a sub par vigilante. If anything it takes more skill to take down a baddie without Killing them.

Not all vigilantes kill. Look at Spider-man and Daredevil.

Anyhow, my deepest apologies for going severely off topic but I had to defend Batman.

Here's my entry for the GA contest.

I am not going to argue this and further derail this thread (sorry) If you really care about my opinion you can PM me and we will discuss it. But frankly I dont really care about why you think Batman is a Super Hero, cause I know he is not.

Thanks Adogg! I had an alternate version as well. It was a tough choice. are we allowed to post alternate versions of the same toon? I read we could submit more than one toon but can we submit more than one version of the same toon?

And Markus: You state your opinion like it is a fact, or a law. DC comics, as well as half of the comic book industry and fanbase have labeled him as a super hero. But hey, the creators, writers, fans, ect. are all wrong. Your opinion is the only one that matters, as you are clearly right.

Hero: anyone performing feats of great merit and admiration. IE: firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and soldiers.

Super Hero: One who has devoted their life to saving lives through the use of powers/rigorous training/science experiments/technology/mutation ect.

In my opinion, if you have saved an entire city (Gotham, metropolis, ect.) Or in some cases THE WORLD (IE batman in public enemies) you are a super hero. Again, this is only my opinion, but is based on facts.

Because college humor is clearly the official who's who of superheroes, not a series of parody videos unaffiliated with DC comics.

Actually even the Golden Age Superman couldn't fly at first, just leap great distances. That's where the phrase "Leap tall buildings with a single bound" comes from.

Quite a few Golden Age Superheroes had powers as well, most of them coming from DC: Flash, Dr. Fate, Spector, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel...

Sorry Super Jump not flying, which is a part of what I was saying, during the golden age most Supers where not anywhere near as powerful as they are today. and if you go a hold of a list of golden age super heroes most didn't have "powers" they may have had a Magic Item such as Green Lantern. a couple where considered "Super Soldiers" but the majority where folks like Batman, Hard working and inspired to save the day.

I really like non super powered superheroes but the work best in a realistic setting not together with superpowerd ones. If you throw them together it really messes everything up that makes them super because compared to some overloaded munchkin like superman everybody's just an average nobody.

The really fun part thou is that supeman's archnemesis is pretty much an evil version of batman (highly intelligent, super rich human with no powers). So by some peoples definition Lex Luthor is not a supervillain?

Sorry for keeping the thread of tracks. I highly suggest a new one for the next contest ;)

So now I'll give the top toons and two honorable mentions:

Honorable Mentions:

Armageddon 2419 by Mariel_Martog
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/gothicshark/Armageddon2419.jpg
This is a great toon that I hope Mariel_Martog is playing. She looks sleek and stylish. I really like what the creator did with the helmet.

Trueshot by Butston
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p272/ButstonFreem/CO%20chars/trueshot.jpg
My eyes are drawn to the matching male skirt piece and boots. Also, the chainmail under armor is a nice touch. This has to be the best archery toon I have seen yet. Excellent work Butston.

Now for the top Five (in reverse order):

#5. Lone Eagle by Gamen
http://i561.photobucket.com/albums/ss53/Gamnaven/screenshot_2009-10-02-21-26-37-1.jpg
This toon illustrates to me the practical nature that golden age toons had. He has gloves and a scarf, goggles and a backpack for flight. All ways that early artist tried to explain superpowers. Nice toon!

#4. The Damselfly by Artmonster
http://forums.champions-online.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5358&d=1254711318
Art did a good job of using minimal colors and a simple easily drawn design. She looks like a perfect sidekick or love interest for that special golden age superhero. I guess that makes her someone’s grandma now, eh?

#3. Warden by omeewan
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/41/wardenga.jpg
The cowl mixed in with a simple emblem and limited amount of colors, makes for a nice Golden Age toon. I can see him fighting the Nazis at our shores now!

#2. Shining Star by Needless
http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/92/l_4ee1b63b1841455eafe36b83c18e4747.jpg
I was really impressed when I saw this one. It really looks like a perfect golden age hero to me. A nice basic shirt and jeans, typical black mask and helmet. Nice iconic name as well. I really hope you are playing this toon Needless.

And the winner is:

#1. Kid Atomic by Loki_Liesmith
http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac83/JKorber/atomic.jpg
Perfectly built toon. Great use of smooth lines and textures. Love the backpack and helmet combo but the best has got to be the lack of pants! Talk about perfectly fitting a time period. Great name to boot too!

I will create a separate thread for the next contest tomorrow. Good luck!
