View Full Version : Best Solo Build? (Need Advice)

I don't get to play with others much in-game.
I've been playing around with some high damage Power Armor builds and none of them seem to be working out for me. I chose Power Armor because it mirrors one of my favorite heroes Iron Man. My other favorite heroes in the Comics are Magneto, Superman, and Batman.
I’m not looking to copy any character but having a theme to my character really makes the game come alive to me. I chose Power Armor mainly cause I’m a huge mech/robot fanatic. I don't think Power Armor is working out for me. It feels like I'm trying to force it to do something it’s not designed for.
I don’t really know enough about the game to figure out what I need other than to come here and ask more educated and knowledgeable people.
Basically I'd like to do a lot of High Damage and Crit Damage. I want to be able to play alone and not die constantly. I've heard a few people tell me to go Munitions or Fire but I have no knowledge of those power sets.
Can anyone give me some solid advice? I really love this game and any mature level headed advice would be incredibly appreciated. Im really confused about the Stats in the game too.
Also... I'm not sure which stats I should be stacking for each power set, and which ones I should ignore. They have "Suggested" stats but they don't make sense to me all the time. I'm a bit lost as you can tell.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Generally speaking, the suggested stats for a given set are based on one or two very specific powers in that set. Munitions recomends Dex and Ego pretty much solely for Killer Instinct. Force recommends endurance and ego mostly for Personal Force Field. Etc.
If you want high damage, the only thing for it is to put a lot of effort into improving your super stats. Strength does add a bonus to melee damage but even that isn't as big of a deal.
If you want to be crit heavy, stack dex and ego. Dex makes you crit more and ego makes you crit harder. Make those your super stats and then stack both to the roof and you'll crit about 1/3rd of the time for double damage. If you do that, you should take Killer Instinct. I'm pretty sure that works with any power set and it basically gives you free energy to help make up for the fact that you're not stacking recovery, intelligence, or endurance.
Beyond that, the key to soloing is you want a good AOE attack (since the bad guys come in packs), a good block enhancer (I'm a force shield guy myself), and a passive defense power (I seem to be getting away with personal force field even though I'm not stacking endurance, but super reflexes should theoretically be better with high dex).

Here's my build ...

I don't think it's the "best," but it's pretty solo friendly.

My build is in my Signature. I soloed fight club at lvl 17 (it's a lvl 17 mission for a group of 3), and soloed (3) +6 level henchmen with no device help. It works ok for me.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Maybe you could help me narrow down what my opinions are.
I would prefer to be a Ranged Damage-Oriented class of some sort.
Power Armor I have a feeling is designed to be a "Tank" of sorts and that's why Im not enjoying myself because Im trying to play the Damage Role. If i could figure out a way to be a Damage Oriented Power Armor and not die every 2 mobs that would be great!
That video linked above was a Fire Build? I think. I couldn't really tell.
The second Tank build was awesome; but Im not really interested in melee or tanking.
Again thank you for your time and effort. I cant say how much I appreciate it.

I'm on a rush, but all i can tell you is that if you want to play Solo, Condemn and Pyre are abilities that you should have, bassicaly, AoE attacks, Condemn and Pyre just fitted my character design by pure luck, but Condemn AoE paralizes and deals AoE damage and Pyre deals A LOT of AoE damage and deals damage over time if the enemy stays in the fire.

I have two characters that I solo very easily with, a Force-hybrid, and a Munitions. Both are focused primarily on DEX and EGO, with some CON whenever I can get it. A DEX/EGO build will get you a ton of crits and some very high damage amounts.
Force is really nice if you like knockbacks. Force Blast is a tap/charge ability that does some very nice damage plus a decent chance to knockback the target. Force Eruption is also a great ability, it's a close-range AoE that does significant damage and also knocks back everything near you. I also picked up Regen and Iron Cyclone from the Supernatural tree, to round out this character.
My second character is only in the mid teens, but is full Munitions. It seems to do very good damage against single mobs. The AoE is also fairly decent, though it requires some maneuvering in some occasions.
There's a ton of decent powersets, either way you look at it. My suggestion would be to look over every powerset in-game, and trying to determine which abilities sound decent to you.
The best advice that I can give you is this:
- Try to pick a good synergy of stats. Personally, I strongly recommend focusing on primarily Dexterity & Ego if you want a lot of crits & damage. These obviously aren't necessary - any stats will do, as long as they work well together.
- Try to pick a good synergy of powers. Try to pick up a good single-target attack for stronger mobs, an AoE for larger groups (particularly henchmen), and either a passive defense or some healing for your survivability. A hold is also pretty nice to have, though probably not too important for PvE.
- A passive defense helps A LOT. I have Regeneration on both of my main characters...it's extremely useful.
- Remember to block often. This is extraordinarily important when fighting NPCs that have special abilities. Often times, missing a block on a hard-hitting ability will be the difference between winning and losing.
If you're interested, here's 2 solo videos I made post-patch. The first is of my Force character, and the second is on my friend's Telepathy character, so you can see how they work.

the best solo build is going to have these components...
1. a ranged energy builder
2. a passive defense power, preferably one which applies to your prime stats you choose at 5 and 13. don't pick lightning reflex and neglect to slot dex for example. also remember those 5 and 13 stats are what will give you +% to damage.
3. an ae. I prefer a cone you can move around with and re-position like chain gun. people are having great results with the mines but i'm pretty sure those are on deck for the next nerf.
4. if you're not end or rec build upgrade one or two of your attack powers to accelerated metabolism.
5. Picking a travel power is flavor mostly, but teleport or any kind of flight will get you to the next green circle safer and faster.
6. (optional based on the rest) a solid high damage single target attack. This is for dropping super villains faster. IF your build is mostly ae you don't need this, of couse. Also if you have an attack with incorporated stun like beatdown you don't really need this either.
after that the rest is flavor and fluff. as long as you maintain applicable stats, from there on, you can pick and choose whatever feels good for your toon. enhanced block would probably be next, maybe a heal, or a click damage buff.
voila. solo 1-40.

In http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=55059 I am trying to make an Imba solo build that everybody can use. Listed the build up to level 17 (beyond that is listed, but since Telepathic Reverb. seems broken will probably go a different rout).
Will post how to play that character later sometime today. But just to give an expamle, I soloed Fight Club with that at 14. Did die once to a trash pull while I wasn't carefull enough, but on the other hand I could pull the whole "Top" room with 1 Supervillan, 1 Mastervillan 2-3 Villans and 2-3 Henchies at once without dying.

I currently play a lvl 29 FORCE character that, concept and practicality wise, is every bit the Ironman, all-around self sufficient solo Super-Hero right out of the comics that you may be looking for. He generates a lot of Energy, has mega damage potential (regularly hitting over 1000 HPs against single enemies), possesses an energy-generating shield, and has AoE knockback abilities to get the baddies off you when you are surrounded and all alone. Also, the whole set is built around knockbacks, which keep the enemy remote and down on the ground while you blast away at them. In terms of role-playing, he is the quintessential blaster like Ironman.
START WITH CUSTOM FRAMEWORK: It allows you to add QUICK TRIGGER (+12 Dex for more criticals, +12 Ego for extra damage from those Criticals). Custom Framework also allows a litttle Batman-like gadgeteering in the form of ...
"THE SECRET WEAPON": My recommendation, what I call a secret weapon really, is to grab the Gadgeteers little Sonic Blaster as your Energy Build power, then advantage that with the Refraction of Sound that turns it into a mean cone power that disrupts attacks from ALL enemies in front of you and produces a LOT of energy quickly (I regularly take out whole groups with just this little energy gen gun! and little else).
FORCE BLAST: Lvl 5 - Pick up Force Blast , your main damage power with a 100 ft snipe range, the ability to Charge, and knocks back the foe. Level it up as you progress to get those 1000+ hits at full charge. Also serves well when you just use it as a Click to pop off devastating rounds that knock them back on their feet.
FORCE ERUPTION: Lvl 5 - A close area attack that is perfect for the solo player in that it blasts those crowding enemies to the four winds, AND it had a Charge ability like Force Blast. Pop off the Sonic Blaster for Energy, snipe one guy with a severely charged Force Blast as they come at ya, then blast them all away for up to 363 initial damage as they crowd around you. Repeat as necessary.
FORCE SHIELD: Lvl 8 - With a nice arsenal of offense, its time to think about protecting that lone Hero. Force Shield not only blocks incoming damage but GENERATES Energy with incoming hits! A great tool for those who need more of the power of the cosmos to get our business done.
PERSONAL FORCE FIELD: Lvl 11 - It's always tempting to go for those killer offensives in the early levels, but bite the bullet and add more protection with this Passive Slotted power (478 damage absorption initially that increases with Endurance stat.). Go for it, because you have a good bit of damage dealing ability and its not that far to Level 14 and ...
FIELD SURGE: Lvl 14 - Yet ANOTHER protective power! But aren't you beginning to feel like Ironman now encased in his impervious metal shell? This one renews your Personal Force Field when it fizzles out, but actually puts a cool protective bubble around you that absorbs an additional 705 damage initially! Now that you are securely encapsulated in that metal shell, its time to add some more mojo...
FORCE DETONATION: Lvl 17 - The same as Force Eruption but from 50 feet away! Now scatter whole groups with 532 damage before they even get a chance to see you!
LEVEL 20 and up: At this point you pretty much have your core offense and defense to handle most things alone that the universe throws at you. Pad out that Hero with a good bit of CONST, a good bit of REC (high Equilibrium for pulling off the energy-hungry Force Detonation at the outset of a battle) and END (we all need more Energy), A LOT of DEX (Critical Hit Chance) and a LOT of EGO (Critical severity), with a bit of PRES for Personal Forcefield effectiveness. STRENGTH doesn't matter to me much, as well as INT since I recharge Energy at an enormous speed with the Sonic Blaster.
NOTE ON FORCE CASCADE: You could opt for the mighty Force Cascade as an alternative to Force Blast. BUT, it hits a group in a cylinder and for more initial damage, but uses a LOT of Energy (94-306) which you would probably need to charge passed your Equilibrium to get off a moderately powerful blast. I by-passed it all together in favor of leveling up the relatively low energy draining Force Blast instead, the all-around Swiss Army knife Force power.
When I pretty much maxed out the cool Force powers, for fun I threw in the Haymaker from the Might framework. It's a good complement to Force since it knocks back, plus it can hit for MASSIVE damage (I've pulled off some 1500+ hits with it). And what Superhero doesn't have a good old punch in the arsenal for brawling it out with the bad guy? Same goes for Beatdown, also of the Might framework.
Unbreakable is another good defensive (Click) additional for post level 20 solo Heroes since it gives you serious damage immunity for those times when you are going up alone against the tough bosses and need that bit of extra protection either before or during the battle to get you through.
I am not a serious student of builds, but just went with what seemed to make sense for my space pilot/cosmic explorer themed Hero that I call Captain Cosmic. Since FORCE is a sort of generic super-power, this kind of framework works well thematically as a Superman/Ironman/Defender type Hero. Here is his page if you are interested in him further: http://www.champions-online.com/character_profiles/1051710/view.
I hope this long-winded post helps a bit ;)

Of course at high levels the any healing abilties (especially from the celestial framework) are excellent, as you can heal yourself faster than enemies can damage you. I personally will sometimes just sit there with about ten henchman swarming me and just heal myself.
