With all due respect, it would have been real nice if it could've been ensured things were working properly before they released the game and made us all pay for it. I bought the game several days ago and between the framerate issues and server downtime I haven't been able to play since.

Understood but thats no excuse though, many MMO's change there maintenance time here & there so there not always going down on the same peoples playtime... I mean people that play during the day dont get to miss a day.. I cant play for days a time & I paid $50 and its getting really annoying u know? I understand it will happen less & less but come on i cant get past lv15 with all this downtime ON MY PLAYTIME. EQ used to come down for 5 minutes...upload the patch and bring servers back up, wtf are they doing for 2hrs on opening month to make a good impression...

the day someone writes a decent 3d game with multiplayer that is 100% bug free is the day the world will implode. you realise that don't you??

there's hundreds of thousands of lines of code in these things, not ALL of it written by the company who's name is on the box and it ALL has to work together. be thankful the devs are visibly (and communicatively! (unlike a certain cowboy shooter game that came out in June)) working on fixes for the issues that crop up.

MMOs are particularly bad for bugs, since they can't possibly do enough major load testing prior to release. If you're buying MMOs expecting flawless performance on all fronts, you're deluding yourself hugely.

unless, you know, they hadn't fixed what they thought they had in the last maint downtime or something else came to light...

Oh thank god, yes. The last game I was playing for about 3 years was down to about 200-300 players total due to Sega(Sonic Team primarily), not saying a word about anything. Something would go down, or we wouldn't get any updates for a large gap of time, and they'd just leave us hanging. They had good reasons, as revealed in the end, and are now updating it regularly, but it'd have alot more of a population if they just said what was going on in the beginning.
/end rant.

But yeah, thank god for that.

Just because the client "only" needed to download a 70meg patch doesn't mean they didn't have to do lots of other changes on the server .. For one I'm thankful that they are fixing issues and rolling out updates as quickly as they do. Even if it does mean a slight loss of play time here at the start of it all.

i agree, i'd *love* it if the maint times could be staggered - playing from Australia we get the short end of the maint stick with almost every MMO - on top of the massive ping times to US servers etc (worse for me because i already get huge pings even to servers based here >< ).

I do feel for you though. I used to work night shift, so on those days off when I'd be up all night, I'd like to play my MMO. Since I wasn't on a set schedule and those days off would shift every week, the day my night off fell on a maintenance night, it was deflating to say the least. And those maintenances would last for 4-5 hours. Not fun.

Um its the SAME time almost EVERY night, there is nothing emergency or NOT forseen about this maintenanceActually, it can be argued that they leave the game as-is during prime time to allow everyone to play. But the code still needs heavier work than was expected, so even though it's still happening nightly, it's officially an Unscheduled maintenance (figure Cryptic wants to keep it ideally to once a week, but it's just not able to happen atm), escalating it to "Emergency" status.

I wake up at about 4am (I'm on EST so that's pretty much right when it started) and think "Hey, I'll play some CO right away...fun times!"...then I realize that there's more maintenance a-brewin'! Ahh...me oh my oh...still, I could give them some credit...as it is I'm getting a better feeling from how this game's launch is progressing than how WoW's launch was.

All I remember from THAT launch is horrid lag and an entire 24 hour plus period in which nobody could play at all. Anything less than that and I can deal...plus I got an extra day to my free 30 days...which is nice.

As much as it may suck not to be able to play, whether it's "prime" time for your area of the world or not, at least you know why it's down and approximately how long it's going to take to fix it.

Oh ya you can if the mistake is severe enough, though it also depends on the company. I know a guy responsible for a wierd system crash to cash registers getting to market who got canned, but I also know the QA tech at CCP who was held accountable for the EVE:trinity XP SP2 win.ini issue and they still have a job, just a demotion as well.

Either way, let the maintainence ride, any MMO worth its code will do the same thing launch week, there's just to much crucial data that can be mined from the servers to optimize performance and start some predictive stat-tracking, but the really good stuff means you gotta shut the servers down and stop the 'write' process.

And as a complete left-field, anyone know if theres a full-skeleton body unlock for costumes anywhere?

You could always go play **** where you have to download an anti piracy program with the game and then download another program that makes the anti-piracy program gtfo and let you play :)

This is a fairly smooth release as far as I can tell, though I'm guessing most people don't play every MMO from release like I generally do.

You could always go play **** where you have to download an anti piracy program with the game and then download another program that makes the anti-piracy program gtfo and let you play :)

Man NOW THAT sounds like fun.

Not that I am clamoring for rewards or anything - I have always found that to be silly - but giving away 'extra' days is kind of lame.

At least in the view of the ones with life time subs.

Hey! I get life +1!

Hehe forgot about that lifetime subscription thingie.. But still, you committed to the game for a lifetime.. I'm only trying it out - it's nice to get an extra day when stuff like this happened, in wow for example.. - you don't get jacksh*t :)

Anywho, i really enjoy the game - atleast the hours i've played, it's looking good! Go Cryptic GO! :D

Actually i would be satisfied with some reasons for the downtimes.

IMO notes for patches or maintenance are still kind of slackering...

As you have to get a plan on what you patch each time you change something, i am always wondering myself, why we get -at best- a coarse overview instead of details.

Personally i don´t like to get the half truth said and figure out the other half slowly by myself after.

Can´t be that hard.

And as long as we - the paying customers - accept that, it'll never be changed. Imagine buying a tv that turns off now and then, cannot show all the channels yet, or changes a program halfway you're watching it. "Well yes ma'am/sir, it happens, but it's just been released, this telly".

hi, welcome to reality!

maybe go google C++ then have a wander through the directx sdk, etc etc etc then come back and tell us how easy it is to write massive applications completely bug free for DIVERSE hardware (which a single TV is not). I'm sure Cryptic would love to hire a developer with your keen insight into the workings of applications like this.

Well if that would be the case, I wouldn't want to work for such a company anyway.

Everyone makes mistakes. You learn from it and move on. That's how you grow and build up experience.

Even Veteran IT pro's, who are in the bussiness for many years, still screw up now and then.

We are not talking about a doctor killing a patient, because he drunk to much on a party the night before.... or something like that.

The server is still technically down. If you patch early, you may have to repatch once the server actually comes up, thus wasting time. You might want to continue to refresh the main page to verify the server is actually up, that way you can avoid wait times for patching.

I think the "DIVERSE hardware" is just a small part of game. It´s more the stability/balancing thingy IMO.

Actually the question is, if those emergency maintenance surprises have to be or if they could be collected to patch them all at once on a weekly base or if it´s still at the state of late non-stable beta.

I do understand both sides of understanding daily patching and complaining daily patching. Even we are almost all familiar with those up- and downtime starts, it won´t make it better at all.
Sometimes it seems to me, that every online-mmorpg has to invent his own wheel. ;)

Anyways, enjoy the time and work on alternative builds.. just for the case of another nerf... :p

I really hope and pray that you people who do this aren't serious. I worked as a manager for a Major Philadelphia based cable comp. All this right around the start of CoH. On Saturdays we let out guys bring in Laptops and watch movies or play mmo's over wireless. You take the day off to play? Fired.

As a side note if you really want to ensure that you can play when you take a :Sick Day: to play...Might I suggest you email Cryptic in advance and let them know you are taking the day off and could they please keep the servers up.

Ok, here is what i found out:

I saved a "pre-patch-installation" of CO.

Then i patched it. Starting CO brings the error mentioned above.

So i tried to copy 3 files from prepatch to actual "live" folder:

xlive.dll
xlivefnt.dll
xlperfctr.dll

After that, my client starts, but i am not able to connect to account server or able to login.

But i think the last patch made one or all of those files corrupt.

Ok i think i have to explain a bit:

Yesterday was the big downtime thats right:

AFTER That, there was a 140mb patch and the game worked fine until 10am GMT today.
This downtime should last until 12am GMT today. Server came back online and another 123mb patch.

Seriously, let's take a look at the fact that this game has been trully live for only 3 days. Any thing that is this "massive" (MMO) is going to have issues in the first couple of weeks and will require frequent updates and patches. I cannot think of one single MMO that has not encountered this same issue.

I will say the thing I appreciate the most is the fact that Cryptic is fast to react to any issues and does an amazing job of communicating what is going on. I have played WOW since day 1 and saw all the same issues. My regular day off is tuesdays and I can't tell you how many of those days were filled with down server time even up to a month ago. I understand youe frustration here. The biggest thing that differentiates Blizz from cryptic is customer service. WOW would never even think about giving any form of credit to their customers, while Cryptic is adding a free day to everyone for the lost day of game time. I salute you Cryptic for this decision. Well, it took me several attempts to get the patcher to connect and begin patching the client (previously, it would let me log in, but wouldn't connect to the patch server), but it seems to be running now.

Just hope the game is OK once the patcher has finished.

Has anyone taken a look at the system and application event logs? It looks (on my system at least) like the launcher is looking for microsoft vc90.crt (visual c++ component stuff). I only have vc80.crt.
As far as I can tell, this means that the latest patch has been compiled in debug mode and the people that don't have the necessary vc++ components are out of luck until the devs re-compile and re-patch.

Or download and install the latest visual c++ redistributable package:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en

Tested this on my system and it seems to work now

This works. He's right. I'm in.

Just because the client "only" needed to download a 70meg patch doesn't mean they didn't have to do lots of other changes on the server .. For one I'm thankful that they are fixing issues and rolling out updates as quickly as they do. Even if it does mean a slight loss of play time here at the start of it all.

A big part of client-server structures has been mentioned here. Just because we only needed 70MB it doesn't mean that's the only change for the server side. Files, generally, can't be updated when they're in use which is why you have to bring things down for updates. We have no idea what was updated on the server(s) or why it needed to be brought down for so long, but at least we only got stuck with a 70MB download. :)

I've said it in other threads, and several have said it here, but just try to be patient and weather the storm. MMO launches are (almost) always rocky. That doesn't mean we can't expect a quality product but there are going to be issues and those issues will need to be addressed. Cryptic is doing a good job of keeping us informed of what has been going on. The comment about the new NOC guy and what caused the big outage is a lot more than I've seen come from some other companies in the past when there was a problem. Most of the time they just say "We located the issue and it has been fixed" with no more explanation than that.

I know it sucks when the outages happen during your key play hours but things should get better. It's only the fourth. There has been one week of retail play time (if you had the early start) and honestly I've been able to play more often than not so I'm probably taking this lighter than some. However, if this is SOP a month from now then I think we'll all be grabbing the pitchforks and torches.

Sorry for the long-winded reply.

With all due respect, it would have been real nice if it could've been ensured things were working properly before they released the game and made us all pay for it. I bought the game several days ago and between the framerate issues and server downtime I haven't been able to play since.

You need to relax. THE most successful mmo - Wow had more problems at launch. So Chill, and get a life, find something to do in meantime. And if u concerned about $$ you should know better than to lunge urself into a freshly released game. Its kinda normal that they still tweak things after launch.

I'll admit to being a little annoyed since I have NEVER been able to log onto this game, since I bought it and got into the beta. The stupid server has been down every time I've tried. I could cry...

Having said that, I understand teething problems, but it's very disheartening

I have to give it to Cryptic, that was the fastest few (literally 10-ish) seconds it's ever taken me to download a 100+ MB patch for a MMO game (usually patchers are slow and clunky (when it came to WoW) and at least not as fast as this). I must be lucky with the mirror being close to me or something since I typically only get those rates when downloading (no, not illegally) from dedicated hosts  Pleasently surprised about that :o

Speaking of maintenance, the one tonight at 1am was never going to be about the game itself. Cryptic didn't realize that it was still letting all the people who had pre-order accounts still play the game for free. If someone didn't say something, I'm sure they would have been able to play for a long time basicvally taking a **** on anyone who paid.

By the way glad they don't mind losing money on that, but they don't want to bother cleaning up the mess that is all the lies and backdoor deals that the billing department was making. Ticket 30787, anytime someone who isn't part of billing and/or not a total lair/douchebag can look at that, it would be greatly appreciated.

On a related note, if anyone else who had money issues or was getting paid on a day past the deadline was told by billing that a deal would be made where they could still receive the lifetime sub, please state who you spoke to or post the ticket number. Cryptic needs to know about what kind of shananigans was going on internally. Maybe someone from Cryptic will help, maybe not, but at least it can be put out here in the open so people are aware of what has been going on, since unfortunately, it seems like some parties are pretending this never occurred.

I wonder what could possibly need to be adjusted now.

That was hopefully a joke. Theres a ton of problems and bugs that need to be addressed in a brand-new MMO.

However, I dont see anything about why I cannot access the game right now. its 1:30 pm here. I like to play these games in the mornings. I like the game so far despite it being suffering from server-related issues.. but this is getting out of hand. Feels like I have spent half of my available playtime waiting for the servers to come back up. On tuesday or was it wednesday I waited maybe 6 hours or so? This morning about 3-4 hours so far. Please guys, I have faith in you but do hurry up.

I can't tell if its my connection or Cryptic or both that's having issues right now. It;s 6:30 am my time and I have been trying since 3am to log on. 90% of the time I can't get the launcher to load and the one time I was able to log on, I needed to zone and crashed and now I'm back to trying to get the launcher to load.

Have issues with the forums too. Half the time when viewing a thread or just heading back to the main list (cause I'm an addict and I hang out here when I can't play) I get a server not found which is typical when my net goes down. However, other than occasionally, I can view other websites just fine. Here on the forums, I need to refresh 5-7 times (yes I was that bored and counted) before I can get the site to load again.

Again, because my internet is sometimes hiccupy, I can't tell when it's me or when it's just Cryptic but it's driving me guano insane. Cause it's every morning during this time now for the past couple days. I just. want. to play. please.
