Protector Role, your defensive set up. Naturally, what most people are going to select when they want to tank. It gives, a bit more hp over balanced mode, does however drop your damage by a considerable amount, your energy degenerates even faster, and as far as fighting goes, your energy builder gives less energy (although blocking -does- return a nice amount, depending on the damage of the attack).

Well, my problem is, why no extra defense? We're supposed to tank with a little more hp? Less damage? Why doesn't this role also give a minor AoE taunt for tanking larger groups? Are there any plans to fix this to make it a more viable role than "I need more hp"?

From what i have been reading, going into Protector mode increases your threat, and your HP, and doesn't affect your damage. The only downside is energy degeneration, which is no real biggy given that you should be fighting anyway and getting loads from block.

Sentinel is the support role that decreases damage.

Is there a list of what is the purpose to some of these role? Like how am I suppose to know was sentinel does vs Protector.

there is somewhewre but generally

avenger is +20% dmg, -50% hp, offensive passive
guardian is neutral, all passives
protector is +25% hp, defensiev passive

generally i stick to guardian and don't ever go to avenger

Ah, I was under the impression Protector mode also decreased your damage. As for the increased threat, from everything I've seen, it's an absolutely tiny amount of an increase, something that, without skills that directly add threat to you, is unnoticeable.

That aside, I still find it ironic that the role meant for taking damage, does not give you any innate defense boost, even if it is a small one.

Sentinal decreases damage and threat generation, and raises support related powers like healing and holds, I believe. Energy also does not drop as fast so you can use your powers more often.

To get the exact details on all of this, I think there's a post in the Foxbat Q&A section.

Read it, and while it is very informative, and helpful (Will be saving it for future reference), this is supposed to be more about what the defense role -isn't- doing.

The main key to Defensive Role is that it provides Defensive Passives.

But the HP given is usually not enough to take away from staying in Gaurdian Role.


Gaurdian role as a base has set he bar too high. It makes balance really hard to achieve when you allow ANY passive to be used in that role.

to tank and keep aggro, be sure to get the taunt advantages on your attacks.
That is buffed again by being in protector role, so the Advantage plus Role = nice taunting.

You can't tank from Guardian Role, not effectively anyways.

Protector Role DOES NOT decrease damage, the only downside is that it increases how fast your energy returns to Equilibrium.

You gain twice as much energy from Blocking in Protector, You gain 20% more base hp, and you generate 20% extra threat. Also, Protector is the ONLY Role where Presence increases your threat generation. If you have someone using an Offensive PAssive in your team, you'll never hold aggro over them if you don't run in Protector, use Challenging Strikes and Crippling Challenge Intelligently, and don't invest at least something into Presence.
