View Full Version : Anyway to make control more smooth?

Hi,

I played city of Heroes/Villains for long time and loved how smooth the game was and really enjoyed the combat system. I wish I could say the same for this game. I hate how you press forward to run and it seems laggy and choppy and don't get me started on strafing left and right. Allot of travel powers are even worse, get stuck on stuff because it almost impossible to strafe left and right. And the combat system seems so choppy and laggy and non responsive. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Seconded. Though for me, the controls feel most spongy when trying to turn left or right. Like the game has to think about all the animations it needs to execute in order to get my toon's legs to fumble about and turn before the camera actually turns with it.

Also, in both turning and strafing the sensitivity is way too high. It feels like my character makes these huge jumps in movement both with and without a travel power in effect. As an analogy, lateral movement in the game feels like the leap between a 10 point font and a 24 point font rather than a 10 pt to a 12pt which would feel "smoother". And this is in using the keyboard for strafing and turning since the mouse is uncomfortable to me.

I feel the same way, mouse movement lags behind in turns and you can't pull far enough back with the camera. I really want to like this game, it has so much going for it, but the controls and UI need a major upgrade. Also where is the option to bind alt and ctrl+mouse 4, mouse 5, or scroll wheel?

Love the game, but do second all of the above requests/questions.

I'd also like to be able to see target of target and even target of target of target. If there is a way to do so, and I've missed it, just let me know.

Thanks!! :)

Maybe Cryptic will see this and hear the complaints and make the controls more responsive and reactive like City of Heroes/Villains! Hopefully because this game has so much potential.

The 'mouse lag' phenomenon is something I've been researching lately, because I've been trying to squeeze more performance out of games that feel like they suffer "console-itis". Of note, Oblivion, Mercenaries 2, and now Champions Online have all felt like the game is taking a moment to respond to commands, even if the framerate is good.

One of the factors I've hit upon is called "Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames". If you have an Nvidia card, you can find this setting in the "Global 3D Settings" in "Manage 3d Settings"

I've found that the lower you turn this down, the more susceptible to framerate drop you are (like when a big explosion happens), however the more responsive gameplay feels on certain games. I'm such a twitch gamer that I'm now running mine on 0, and loving it.

Try turning yours down and tell us if you got any improvement.

One other thing to keep in mind: this game is very susceptible to network traffic latency. On and off for a while I was having this issue intermittently with no recognizable pattern. One day it was very responsive, the next I'd have to hammer the same button over and over just to get a power to fire off.

I started going through my router logs anytime this started happening and low and behold it usually happens when my up stream is being utilized by something else: vpn connection to work, periodic automated email checks, etc. Screwy thing about this is I have 10Mbps up and my bandwidth wasn't really overutilized. I know it seems odd, but I'm really starting to wonder about the state of the networking code they have in place.

Yesterday I logged in and gameplay was excruciating. I'd start rubberbanding all over, my teleport would fire then turn off even if I didn't hit the button, powers weren't triggering on the first button press, and worse, block wasn't even working normally. Running in windowed mode, I checked everything and low and behold, I left my vpn connection up to work. Here's the odd thing: it was only utilizing about 5% of my up stream, and barely 1% of my downstream and that was the only other thing running on my system.

I logged out of CO, logged out of my vpn and closed it, restarted CO and everything was spot on.

I dunno, but maybe they might want to look into how they're handling packets.
