Well, the old threads are archived, so thought I would start a new easter egg thread.
My favorites so far are Corporal Beihn in the desert. Aliens is still one on my favourite movies. (Check IMDB if you don't get the reference)
Another fun one was fighting Sheriff Robo. IAs I was doing it I couldn't help but hear Homer Simpsons voice in my head "Lobo, Lobo, bring back Sheriff Lobo"
Any other ones that have made people giggle?

The airliner that crashed in Canada isn't only from Lost, it's a long standing in-joke for hollywood writers.

Lost also wasn't the first to use it.

At least two of the ghosts, Eddie Dean and Hoots, that you have to kill for the sheriff in Burnside are named after characters from Stephen King's Gunslinger series. I bet all four are, but I'm not sure as I haven't finished the books yet.

I really enjoyed the "Anchorman" movie egg. The one where you save Action News from Foxbat. Talking to the reporters gave me a good laugh.
Just recently found a Depeche Mode egg (well that's where I recognize it from). In Lemuria (Arg screenied it but my hud didn't copy over.) there was an NPC who said, "I don't want to start any blasphemous rumors but I think that <insert other NPC name(sorry can't remember who they said)> has a sick sense of humor." I was pleasantly surprised by that one.
Thanks for the smiles!

This one's pretty obscure.
The quest Millennium City's Most Wanted (sort of an obvious easter egg in and of itself) has you rounding up escaped convicts. Each of them are named after characters from various Coen brothers films, who are themselves criminals or former/escaped convicts.
Hal McDunnough - H.I. McDunnough (Raising Arizona)
Gil Everett - Ulysses Everett McGil (O Brother, Where art Thou)
<something> Showaltar (don't remember first name exactly) - Carl Showaltar (Fargo)
There might be a fourth too, but my memory's kind of foggy.
Cracked me up since I'm a big Coen Brothers' fan.

So many easter eggs I've found it's hilarious.
Most people alreadty know, almost everything Foxbat says in the Tutorial when you rescue him is not just breaking, but more like chewing up the fourth wall and spitting it out.
Meanwhile, outside of the Qularr tutorial....
I managed to get a shotgun power replace item of some sort, can't remember what it was called, but the description said "Walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. Shop smart...shop S-Mart!" - Army of Darkness
MC City Centre and Renaissance Plaza areas are full of jogging enthusiasts that look remarkably like Duke Nukem, right down to the hair and the glasses. They also seem to get named 'Dirk' a lot. Coincedence? maybe that's why the game never got released;Duke was busy holidaying in Millenium City.
One of the lab techs in the desert during Crisis in the Desert said "Why do we have to wear these ridiculous ties??" Later on after the crisis, another one in the desert said "They're waiting for you ... in the test chamber." - Half Life 1.
While doing the 'Minding the Zombies' mission I came across two of the quest target zombies dancing and saying "All we wanna do is eat yer brains!" - from the Jonathan Coulton song "Re: your brains"
One of the randomly fleeing people in the Renaissance Centre during the End of Beta Destroid attacks said "I just wanna be home watching cartoons!" - I'd wager this is from Vince Latello's line in 'My Science Project' upon fleeing the tyrannosaurus.
I don't recall the others at the moment, I'm stuck at work. :D

In MC there's at least 1 Big Lebowski references in henchman dialogue on the west side. I don't remember which gang it is, but it's the ones outside of Leo's Bar for the "Millenium City's Most Wanted" quest. They say, "We are Nihilists, we believe in Nothing!" then the response "Say what you want about ___(I don't know if they actually say "the Nazi's" or not), but at least it's an Ethos."
Also, the red sun gang are definitely a take off of Big Trouble in little China. The Magicians are just like the ones from the movie Big Trouble in Little China

There are a couple of old movie references in the desert I got a kick out of.
The first is in the Desert Crisis, that I've noticed. Occasionally, the mutants will shout out "One of us, one of us, gooble gobble!" which is a line from Tod Browning's "Freaks".
Just last night, in the post-crisis Desert, when you're doing all those level 11 missions by the radioactive pools with all the bombs and mutants, I saw a giant congregation of dozens of mutants, all arrayed in front of a bomb, worshipping it. I'm pretty sure that was a reference to "Beneath the Planet of the Apes".
I took a screenshot, but I'm not at my home computer. I'll try to post it when I get a chance this evening.

A rather obvious one is the entirety of monster island, all the manimals are created by Dr. Moreau.
A lesser known one is the lvl 40 instance on monster island, the Ruins of Anarith, in the second room, there are 2 pits filled with lizard eggs that will hatch if you go near them, and 2 vents on the only path across, that will knock you down into them if you try to cross.
When the eggs hatch, the swarm of lizardlings are called "Jhen-kin Broodlings" (after leeroy jenkins and his famous egg-tastrophy)
Edit: Heres a picture of the little broodlings from when it was possible to hit more than 5 critters at once with an aoe attack ;P

He said he was going to Canada because he later shows up in Canada and has more missions for you. So they really only had two choices for him. Canada and the desert. Back in April of 07 I believe, COH introduced a new concept called "visual sound." The Devs said they were going to delete the sound files from each computer and replace them with Explosion Bubbles that say Bam, Boom, Pow, etc. The most popular one was "Freem!" Turned out to be an April Fool's joke. But, Freem was immensely popular. So much so that Freem is actually a loading tip for missions on CoH.
I noticed in game, some villains when they charge a power have Freem pop up over their head. I think Cryptic was still with NCsoft when this joke went out.

And a NPC in the prison base named Hank Shaw, he offers a mission called Hank Shaw's Redemption.
A lvl 15 or so mission in Canada offers a Mysticism reward called Defense Against the Dark Arts (Harry Potter reference?)
Found way more easter eggs but this is all I can recall right now :)

Two of them have keys. ;)
I also considered it a Ghostbusters reference with that mission where a demon is summoned on top of a building, it looks so similar to the first movie.
In Lemuria one of the first contacts you get outside the sub is like "Steve Scizo" or something, a reference to The Life Aquatic's Steve Zissou.

The defeat robot Nemesis perks.
He's a User, Master Control Program and End of Line all reference the film Tron. "He's a User!" is a line spoken by the big bad's second in command Sark expressing disbelieve that he should be told to kill the main character (a human aka a User transported into the computer system). The Master Control Program is the films big villain. "End of Line" was a phrase that the MCP used whenever he had finished conversing with the evil CEO of the company (equivilent would be "goodbye" I suppose).
The Red Dragon cult perk "Grasshopper" is a reference to the Karate Kid, it was what the Sensai called the main character.
The defeat Cobra gang park "Moped" is a reference to the era when Mods and Rockers use to fight each other, Rockers were bikers and Mods used Mopeds.
The exporation perk "Dark Helmet" is a refence to Spaceballs, it was the name of the Darth Vader parody.
"We are the Champions" perk is refence to a Queen song of the same name.
"Adaware" perk is a refence to the Ad aware spychecker program.

For most of you who don't like the show it was a Canadian Sketch show and one of the bits was a small town that had a Jaws like shark named Skura except even though it had mauled and maimed many of the townsfolk, they felt bad for the shark because they could see it killed only because it had to by instinct but hated himself every time he hurt someone. Awesome thread--having a blast reading all the ones I've missed and the ones I've caught.
An obvious one, when you get to Canada crisis zone, the quest "And Justicar For All" referencing the seminal Metallica album "...and Justice For All".
One that was really obscure to some but totally obvious to people, ahem, my age is the quest "Are You There, Grond? It's Me, VIPER" from the young adult writer Judy Blume's book from the 70s called "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret". Totally out of the blue and hilarious.
My faves are the Blade Runner references (someone already noted Do Animatronics Dream of Automatic Weapons, spoof of the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by PK **** that became the movie) and the Cohen brothers.
I missed the nuclear key code that is the famous Konami code that granted extra lives. Fan-freaking-tastic, Cryptic.

One that really gave me a good laugh, was Professor Broom in the Desert, it was amplified by the fact I was watching Hellbo the first time I did it way bac in close beta.

Yea That was the first thing I noticed when I got to MC in the beta. is the NPCs that look so much like duke nukem.

Clicking on random citizens walking by or standing around talking in MC will cause them to say something to you. I've had one ask for an autograph, another get my autograph for the purpose of selling it on eBay, yet another follow me around asking to be a sidekick, someone tell me to leave Foxbat alone, and another yell at me because Gigaton was their friend. I'm pretty sure one also mentioned that I must have spent hours in the costume creator on my ensemble.
I saw a goth walking with head hung low. When I talked to her she was like "leave me alone! Im having existentialistic depression!" or something like that.

Actually, Harmonic Convergence is an astromomical term for all of the planets being in a (arbitrarily) small arc of the solar system. There's plenty of new agey, peace, love and understanding stuff that some people attach to this event, but the actual term is strait science.

Anyway I just noticed another one while doing my 3rd Nemesis series mission. The news anchors are a spoof of Anchorman : The Ron Burgundy Story. The new anchors are Rob Mahogany and Victoria Crownstone which are an obvious play on the characters Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone.
You didn't get the part about him going off to practice his jazz flute? = )

There is a nemesis mission with "Tomb Wader" as the in-instance quest name, and an anthropology professor (not sure if that is Lara Croft's profession, but an obvious reference to her).
My favourite bit (maybe not an easter egg, but I found it funny) is in Canada where there are some Hunter-Patriot spies on one side of a town watching some Viper soldiers, screenshot of the text from one of the Vipers.

An obscure nod is made to the main writer, Shane Hensley, of the PNP Deadlands RPG, in Hang'n Judge Hensley in Burnside.
I blame Hopler and Zeke.

I've seen him in the Ren Center, in Down Town, and all over the Center City and Town Hall areas. If you go back and look through the thread, I've posted a picture of one of my characters talking to him. He's near the Mercy hospital in the pic.
Which reminds me, is the Mercy hospital supposed to be a reference to Left 4 Dead? The first scenario in that game is called No Mercy and has you fighting your way to Mercy hospital.

Yes! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/CandorLupis/Champions/TF2-in-CO.jpg) What a not-so-subtle way to give props to the best team shooter. Great job on that Cryptic.
I have more hours logged into TF2 than any other game I own, its probably the best shooters out there. Seeing this = <3 Cryptic. The first day I was in closed beta I tried to make the pyro... this game needs better gas masks, flamethrowers, and baggier get ups.

You can get the Stronghold prison jumpsuit as a perk, that's what they used for their pyro. I also know how they made his mask.

Found some more in Lemuria,
The Steel Sharks have lasers on their heads, thats from the james bond movie or Austin powers, not sure which.
Several of the perks are named after prince songs/albums; Deep Purple and Purple Reign.
Another perk is called Big Game Hunter, which you get from killing manimals which was a game.
The perk for the flight 408 is called Black Box Down, obvious black hawk down egg.
Perk for killing gadroon is called Battle Toads which was an older game in which you played kung-fu toads.

An obvious one, but very nice. His name is Brand... Ian Brand. And one of the battles got him shaken, not stirred :-)
You can find him on the bottom floor of LEMURIA, kinda mid-east.
dont forget.. James Bond was written/created by Ian Flemming..
Brand might be a reference to the only major james bond girl to not show up in any films Gala Brand, also one of the only two bond never sleeps with...

not so obvious. Alien got it from a short story of the same name by Harlan Ellison.

Gadroon Millennium city quest perk "the truth is right here" is a reference to X-files slogan "the truth is out there".
This was propably reported earlier but the forum search came empty.
Edit: so it was.. sorry. I wonder why the search function came empty for "the truth is right here"..

The boss of the Open mission "Plunder the Sea" in Lemuria is named Ismashual, most likely a reference to Ishmael, the main character in Moby ****. One of his quotes is "You may call me... Ismashual" Which I believe is a pretty known line from the book.
He also has a load of other great quotes, all voiced. One of them is
"You'd best start believing in cyborg pirate stories, hero. Because you're in one!" which is a reference to the line "You'd best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner. Because you're in one." from Pirates of the Caribbean.
I think this is my favorite NPC in the game.

Old enough that you are starting to lose it?
"I have no mouth and I must scream" is the Ellison story you were thinking of, no?

No one has mentioned it, but the perk, "Get to the Choppa" is a Predator/Schwatzenegger reference. You get it by standing next to a helicopter on one of the roofs in MC.

On this same note, there is a VIPER mission in Downtown, MC. During this mission you'll run into a VIPER Squad Leader that shouts "Get to the Transport!"

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the quest "Howdy, Pardner" might be a reference to the 1966 movie The Party with Peter Sellers. He plays an indian fellow who keeps repeating the phrase and since he speaks with an indian accent it sounds like he's saying howdy pardner instead of howdy partner.

Have any other MST3K references been found? I'm a big fan. :)
