View Full Version : Where's the music?

Hi there,
Am I missing something here: there doesn't seem to be much music? Or the ability to loop music? Is there an option somewhere?
Music is VERY important to the immersion of playing. If you do not have this capability or cool, movie-like, superhero / villan music playing in the background as I destroy things and navigate the storyline, this is a HUGE mistake.
Please implement asap! I need music to stay motivated and keep playing!

yea i agree. its not enough to make me not enjoy the game, but installing a small "Loops Music" button in options wouldn't hurt. also i would like some of the kick ass techno stuff from COH. like the kick ass tune from the crisis zone that was industrial

Or, you could just make a play list on iTunes for champions and loop that..
But, there should be a "Loop Music" button.

I paid $50 + $15/month for a complete game.
I'd like to not only loop theme-appropriate music, but good theme-appropriate music.

Music, especially a nice variety of wide ranging music, particularly if tied to the environment would be great. Imagine being in the desert cowboy area and hearing some old twangy, banjo heavy tunes. That would be a riot!

I heartily agree. The music currently is okay, but a more interesting loop would make this game feel a lot better. It really sucks to have the music track end in the middle of a fight; the rest of your time in the zone is spent in utter silence until you log out and back in again.

In my setup options there's a button at the bottom of audo with miscoded buttonname text - says something like [untranslated] (gobbldygook) but the drop down (amongst more coding garbage) shows itunes, winamp, etc....is there a media player built INTO CO? (Or a way to apparently dovetail with media players I have currently installed?)
That would be cool, actually.

i don't know where the music is, but i compose/produce/song write and engineer recording sessions for a living, give these two guys a listen while you play, may not suit a hero genre... but i'm gonna see what i can do lol I'm half thinking of releasing a video game soundtrack for mmo's with crap music through itunes... we'll see

Sounds like the devs are trying to get the media playback functions better embedded in the UI than they had previously, though there are other ways to get that working. During Closed and Open beta, there was an option to listen to your music from ITunes and WinAMP via the following commands:
/mc show - Self explanatory as it shows the embedded media player in the UI for CO.
/mc player itunes or winamp - Depending on which one you like or use most, sets up the player in-game
/mc playpause - Plays music, pauses music. Though, with WinAMP, there's a bug where you would need to have WinAMP either playing or paused before you used the commands to control it in-game. Not sure if this was ever fixed.
/mc next, /mc previous - Next and previous track in playlist.
/mc volume 0-100 - Using whole numbers, you can adjust the volume % for your player in-game from 0 to 100. I recommend around 30 or so to hear the ambient noise and effects while playing.
I think that's pretty much it and you can also set the commands to a particular key or controller button using /bind so long as you know what the names the game assigns the keys. Controller Keybinds (http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=51461) for those that need them.

Wow, now that's an impressive pair of music tracks! I could see myself listening to these while I play a game, regardless of it being an MMO or not.

this is the kind of music video games should have.... it really sets the mood and environment...
the current music in CO is just really annoying and doesn't make me feel very heroic or engage me into the visual atmosphere either.

They do seem to be trying to implement some sort of Winamp and iTunes support within the game. However, it's presently not working. Or at least I couldn't get it to work.

I actually gotta admit that this is one of those issues I have with CO. It IS pretty awesome that there's a system that links a music player program to CO's in-game music display thing. That's awesome. It even quiets the rest of the game while your music plays.
We could still use a soundtrack for CO. I mean, yeah, sure, every once in awhile a lil tune plays, but that's not exactly that captivating. As cheesy as this sounds, I still remember playing Ragnarok Online and listening to the music. Hell, sometimes I'd play certain dungeons just because of the music :p
We really should have a more musical experience. A hero game without a soundtrack...sounds just plain bizarre.

I gotta agree, but not just for a hero game, really just in general. I'm of the opinion that good music in video games is often a make or break thing and while a truly amazing game can get by without good music, and a truly amazing soundtrack will often appear in a mediocre game, more often than not a good game walks hand in hand with good music.
I think this is typically because game makers who strive for a higher level of quality realize that music sets the pace and drive for the scene it supports, and refuse to settle for anything less than a suitably epic piece for their epic battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24_GG0-wnpI), rockhard tune for their hero doing his thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSag4WVJEks), sad lonesome ambiance for their tragic wasteland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ine3_jdQIIs), or something to truly showcase just how mad the villain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hqmeDtVEoE) of the plot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp46nNt_FIE) is.
Then again, my standards might be a little high in some areas. Either way, CO could still use a loop feature on the in game music, at the very least.

I don't mind the music that much, save for lairs. Lairs are like concentrated awesome to me, with a well-thought out atmosphere going for them. So why no unique boss themes for the bosses of lairs (and by association, adventure packs as well)?
I'd be fine with a fan whipping up some vaguely appropriate themes for the bosses and the devs putting those in, if it saves them the trouble. Hell, I'd try doing that if I had any musical talent at all.

I'm personally pleased there's not much in the way of music in this game. In fact, as I recall, the very first thing I did day 1 upon installing the game was turn music all the way down. I have my own music to listen to, or half-watching/listening to Star Trek playing on the tv beside me while I'm in the game.
So... no complaints here.
