Im a bit confused, which stats are bets for a primarily gadgets, maybe some munitions build? Bots for sure, etc. Also, I was trying to pick a good theme based defensive power passive like personal force field, but that works off your endurance modisifer, invul off strength, both of which are low on my character, any other suggestions?

Endurance is choice for Gadgeteering. It helps your Chainsaw a lot and it works well with PFF. The other stat is completely up to you. For a support character, take Presence and a hold or two from somewhere. For an offense character, I think Ego is a good choice along with a hold. For a tank or for PVP, Constitution. Get some heals regardless of which way you go, and don't hesitate to pick some powers outside Gadgeteering.

I'm a pet-centric Gadgeteering build and took PFF for my Defensive Passive. Because Gadgeteering lends itself to mass AoE destruction you only really need a bit of a buffer for you to offload your nukage and PFF fills that void admirably.
I'd recommend against anything that scales up over the course of a fight.

I'd say Intelligence is a good choice - gadgeteering has lots of powers on cooldowns (which INT reduces) and some of them are also pretty expensive power wise (another thing INT reduces)

Doesn't INT also increase pet damage?

I am building a Gadget/Munitions based character and I am going with End/Int as my stats so I can maintain some of the big energy items and also get the cooldown and pet damage boosts from Int. It seems to me if you are going with the pets and any of the big cooldown items from Gadget Int is almost a necessity, and I went with End as my other stat since it would give me more energy and would work well with PFF.

I'm doing a Gadgets / Power Armor build. I went with Con / End for my two super stats. In the open beta I went with Int / Pre and it really didn't seem to have any noticeable effect on the pets. They didn't seem to hold up to AoE damage any better and I didn't notice any difference in damage output between an Int build and a non int build (in terms of pet damage at least). As a pet user you are going to be doing the tanking for your pets because they are so flimsy, you will be the first one in to the fray (you are not a mastermind from CoV sadly), so Con seems like a good investment. End really help with powers like chainsaw and orbital canon which eat a lot of energy. I'll go so far as to say that Con/End might be the optimal choice for almost every character that is planning to do some soloing.
For those just starting I recommend skipping the experimental blaster. It is perhaps the worst ranged attack in the game. I'm convinced the secondary abilities don't work, and the base damage of the attack is significantly lower than every other option. At level 5 I would respec out of it and get Chainsaw rather than waste the power point.
I went:
Level 1: Sonic Blaster / Chainsaw
Level 5: Biotic Shielding / Flight (rank 2)
Level 8: Munitions Bots
Level 11: Invulnerability (Rank 3)
Level 14: Field Drones
Level 17: Minimines (Wall of Fire)
I'm level 25 now, and I haven't really decided what else to spend my points on (have power points 2 in reserve, and 7 advantage points ). After the changes to field drones I think I might actually spec out of them. I think that munitions bots are still a sound investment, you just need to have patience with them. I have no doubt that Minimines (crazy in PvE and PvP) and Chainsaws (crazy in PvE, worthless in PvP) will be changed eventually. Invlnerability is still great even after the latest patch, my character can (and does) die now but not nearly as much as if I removed the power.
I'm thinking that I need a ranged attack and a hold in the build. I was considering concussor beam or Force Blast for the ranged attack. Both of those powers fit pretty well thematically. I was considering Condemn for the hold, which doesn't fit thematically at all, not even a little bit. Condemn is just flat out better than Orbital Canon in terms of effects, but orbital canon has some great animations. I can't really get behind my tech guy using condemn.
Sonic device is good for boosting burst damage if you are running some AoE attacks (minimines don't count).
Focusing on pets means learning to hate enemies with AoE's. Even weak AoEs will wipe out your army. You need to be able to attack on your own as well.
