If an item has been sold off to a vendor, I don't believe there is a way to retreive it. That can be a problem, seeing as how the same actions that equip an item might sell if off if no one notices they are still in "sell" mode.
Either there should be a button to undo a sale, or the interface for selling items should be the same as the research interface, where items to be sold are displayed and the return resources for selling the lot of them is given. That way, you'd at least be able to double check yourself before deleting an item.
