View Full Version : I hate the Hold mechanic

I really, really, really hate it. I get that its meant to simulate the "break a hold" mechanic found in a lot of action games, but its cumbersome and irritating in an MMO, and it makes me consider writing a program to send a fast string of Z's to the client instead of having to whack the key over and over with my finger.
I like that there are more action aspects to CO than its predecessors, and I think that many f those aspects will help make CO more appealing to a broader audience, but the "hold bar" that you have to hit Z to decrease, and which increases if you don't hit Z fast enough and all, is moronic.
Is there any way this could be changed? Have the hold bar decrease ONLY, say, and have hitting Z result in a visible decrease each time you press it rather than only sometimes, at least? Maybe mouse movement and any other keys other than Z contribute to decreasing it?
Something... anything...

I'd have to agree, having to smash Z over and over gets very tedious.

I haven't been bothered by the smashing of the action key, however I can see me getting very tired by next week. I think a press and hold mechanic would be better, that way you still need to pay attention but I am not going to wear out my old joints doing it.
Cheers

Actually, I was thinking - why not allow us to just "wiggle the mouse" to break out of a hold???
Another option might be to add a sort of "mini game" where to have to press the movement keys in a certain order (indicated on screen) to break out.
One other option might be to bring up a charge meter w/ a certain point marked on it, and we have to press space to charge it up to that mark to break free.
Another option might be to permit us to simply attack the hold itself - make it targetable, and base its HP off of the level of the enemy that cast it on you, and the rank of said hold.

Normally I just run out of the hold, didn't even know you had to smash the Z key...huh

Bio I like the press and hold to get it in a range, just like the good old Links (golf game). The location of the range could be random and the size of the range that allows you to break out could be based on stats... I like this idea.
Very constructive ideas, and much better then the easily exploitable/macroable bash the action button.
Cheers

You're not being held then. If you block an attempted hold sometimes you get the hold bar without it actually holding you. The only time you really get held in the game is when you're fighting too many opponents to be able to watch for the incoming special attack... and that's when its the biggest problem, since mobs seem to know exactly when they should subsequently fire off their offensive special attacks.
That, and during PVP, when you get no warning of an incoming hold.

Ah, that makes sense, I try to block every time I see that indicator above their head. Sometimes It says 'Held push Z' (or whatever), I push Z once, and then I can run up to the enemy. I haven't gotten past level 10 on my main toon (to many alts), so I have only been surrounded by 6 or 7 baddies at a time. Nothing major.

Agreed. It does seem a bit silly, like a throwback to some older thumb-smashers. I don't even know what action I'm supposed to be simulating by tapping the Z. I guess I'm just used to "held" meaning "held".

Having to frantically mash buttons to escape simulates the frustration of being held against your will. :P
I wouldn't mind it if I could push my auto attack button and it broke out for me...

I'm all for replacing this mechanic too, pretty much everything bad about it is explained in this thread, so i'll stamp it with a /sign
