This is a repost. My last post got sent to the archives even though people are still responding to it, Dunno how this happened, but if you support this idea please /sign again!

Before I get into it, let me tell you a bit about myself so you can see where I'm coming from. I'f you'd like to skip straight to the suggesting hop on over to paragraph 4. I'm a roleplayer who played COX for 3 years, starting in the second round of closed beta. I'm also less then a year away from graduating with a degree in Game Design, and, even though school takes up most of my time now and I don't sub to any MMO's 'cause I'm a poor college student, I squirm my way into any beta I can get my hands on. I love participating in them, plus it's a cheap way to feed my inner MMO addict. :P

Roleplaying-wise this game is RICH with possibilities. The open-ended power selection, power customization, great costume choices, and Nemesis system all scream to me as catering to the RP crowd that was prevalent in COX. However, as a Roleplayer I see the "One Server, many Instances" approach actually as a downside. The Roleplayers are dispersed amongst the instances with no reliable way to find each other other then staring a supergroup, which is sad.

One of the great parts about being a roleplayer is stumbling upon other roleplayers. Friendships are created when you least expect it. On a RP server even "Kill Stealing" can lead to an interesting conversation. My closest friendships in COX were the ones that were made randomly, either stumbling upon someone in the Park, or at the club. This is completely lost in this system and, even with all the services you've given the RPers, I believe you'll lose them eventually due to the loss of this aspect.

Okay, my Game Designer side knew he had to figure out a way to fix this, and I think I came up with a pretty good idea. Fairly simple, players can "tag" themselves in their profiles. They could type in their interests, even their playstyle, and when changing instances the game could use those tags to search for people most like them. This wouldn't just help the Roleplayers, this would help everyone! Pickup groups would be more interesting, its likely that you'll have something to talk about. PVPers could find other PVPers and challenge them to duels, the lone sharks out there could be alone without having to worry about people randomly inviting them to group, and RPers would be able to "stumble" upon each other. Spore already utilizes this. Players can tag their creations and when someone creates a new game they can choose to populate their world with things based on these tags. This would do the same thing, only it would populate your MMO with people that are most like you.

If the tag system is too grandiose an idea there could be something smaller or more manageable like a dropdown menu with playstyles to choose, and then the game automatically fills instances based on just playstyle. Sample playstyles include: Recreational, PVP, RP, Lone Wolf, Explorer, Grinder. This allows people to play with others that play the same way as them without having to create more servers or rely on blindly joining a Supergroup..

Any thoughts?

Hopefully instead of fixing the LFM flag (that currently doesn't seem to work), they build a tag system instead (or combine them somehow)

There is something in me that says a system like this would lead to a lot of in game griefing or discrimination against certain types of players.

Also, there is a problem with profiles right now. Half the time you try and look at them it comes up with "invalididentityname" .

Think it's a really well thought out and designed suggestion. I wouldn't put it on the top of the priority list, but it would definetely make a good addition and could simplify alot of the gameplay (should i group today or should I not? Do I want to RP today or do I want to just grind for gear?).

I'll /sign as well.

How so?

(Not being defensive, I'm genuinely interested in what you think would be a problem.)

So basically, you tag yourself as X, and the game will try and lump those with that tag together?

Yesplz.

People who aren't X and believe X is the work of the devil and all who practice X should have Y done to them deliberately tagging themselves as X so they will be lumped in with X so they can denounce them as worshippers of the devil and loudly announce they're all going to be Y.

Sure, that could happen, but that could happen whenever people advertise who they are, or what they're into, and that person would definitely get reported and probably a nice slap on the wrist or suspension.

That would actually probably be a good thing, help us weed out the jerks and bigots, especially since you can't hide behind an alt in this game. :p

Yeah right. I already see that happening. Uh-uh.

Sounds Interesting..

I'm a Roleplayer myself... It'd be awesome NOT seeing so many Gokku, Huiks and Betman in the shards I'm trying to roleplay in... and actually stumbling or just getting involved in a situation where people would be RPlaying would be exactly what I wanted...

Edit: (whats with the forums erasing avatars??? CRAP!)

I suspect it may be computationally troublesome to index all characters at once (but maybe not), but either way, /signed

I think this is a stellar idea.

For RP reasons or for language reasons ...
I know french speaking peoples would like to have some "french" tags to easier communications (and french roleplayers would like "RP" AND "French" tags).
MMO is about communication with peoples and it help to speak same language. Ohter way, most peoples prefear to only speak on specific languages channels and do not communicate with peoples they encounter.

I have to say, as i have stated in the other post on this topic, that this is an awesome idea, it will make the game much more enjoyable, on days i wish to role play i can put my tag to RP and be sent to a RP instance, if i wish to grind, i can do that, if i wish to be alone that day, i wont have to worry about random people trying to team up with me. sometimes i like to go off alone and Pwn everything i come in contact with. lol
I definatly sign and stamp this whole heartedly

This sounds like a great idea. Maybe it could work like twitter's hashtags? Adding #RP, #PVP, #Explorer to your character's profile would be all you'd need to do.

This is a great idea. The problem with the Dev response on this issue in the other thread (i.e. that RP servers lead to griefing) ignores reality (the reality being that griefers are far outwieghed by actual RPers). Anyone who had or has characters on Virtue and Freedom in COX would know this.

So, while tags could be exploited by griefers, the reality is that the users of the system will far outwiegh the griefers.

Amen to that. I think people are generally more mature then most give them credit for. I played COX alot for 3 years and RPed out in the open most of the time and I only ran into griefers twice that I can recall. And even then they were minor annoyances. One guy /boombox'ed us in the middle of our conversation and the other kept on fire raining us.

And I love the language idea, didn't even think about that application. That would help alot as well.

I like the hash tags as suggested earlier.

But hey, the game ALREADY SUPPORTS THAT!

It's up to us really! If we decide to start adding as our search commends and searching hashtags, we could manually choose the correct instance and enter the correct teams.

At least until devs decide to implement a system that automatically packs users with relevant tags to same instances, we can show them that it will work, beforehand.

OP can start making a list of hashtags for us to use, then we can take it a bit further, for example someone who looks for Greek RP's can add to his search comment #Greek #RP

Who can stop us now?

this is a great idea, and I'll point out something mentioned in the archived version:

There are a lot more tags than just RP and languages!

Someone made a big list which I won't copy completely, but it included possibilities like

"I like/don't like to play with silly/serious/dark/etc. heros"

"I like to group a lot"

and some of my ideas:

"I'm looking for a supergroup" + "I'm recruiting for a supergroup" (a whole instance where recruits and recruiters could meet up)

"I want to duel at interesting places"

"I want to meet people from other countries"

Plus, the tag system could use your perks, at lower priority, to help out in shard assignment. Someone who has the lore-intensive perks probably wouldn't mind meeting more people who went to that effort. Same with someone who has a lot of the 5k kills perks, or the pvp perks.

It's not a 100% filter, of course. The server would try to match you, but would fill instances whether or not it could do so perfectly by tag. This might mitigate the griefing, since not everyone in an instance would be a target.
