I bought a lifetime subscription last night and was pleasantly surprised to see that I had instant access to the game. I know I sound stupid for asking this next question, but the ads for the subrscriptoins just didn't give all of the info: Does this mean that I DON"T need to purchase the retail version of the game? The ads never mentioned head-start access for liftetime subscriptions, but for all I know not needing the retail box is just a temporary thing until official launch on the 1st.

You will need to purchase a retail version of the game. the grace period ends on the Sept 6th I think so if you don't have a retail key by then you get no access. This is from the subscription offer page.

* A retail box or digital download purchase is required to play Champions Online and future expansion packs. Lifetime and 6-month discounted subscriptions cover your subscription fee. Lifetime subscriptions are valid as long as the game is in service. Subscription fees are non-refundable. We make no explicit or implicit warranties on the service period of the game. These offers end August 31st, 11:59PM PDT. Prices displayed are not inclusive of VAT for purchases from European Union (EU). VAT is charged in accordance with the local legislation in each member state and varies from 15% to 25%.

Seeing as you have no retail, you must've bought the Digital Download version, I don't know how else you would be playing right now.
But you need either of these:
- A retail copy, which has a retail key inside
- A Digital Download version, which gives you the retail key upon release (sept 1st)

All I can say is that I signed up for the free version of FIle Planet and got to play open beta a week or two ago. Last night I decided to drop the $200 on a lifetime subscription and saw the 'download now' option. I instead went to the beta version on my computer, patched, logged in and played. I went back to the Subscription page and did see some fine print saying that a retail version would be required to play the game, but that was it.

Right on the sign up page for the subscriptions. I guess you didn't read too well:

I paraphrased that in the post above yours, which makes my situation that much more confusing. I'm saying that I wasn't expecting to be able to play without purchasing something other than my lifetime subscription (I haven't actually bought the game itself), yet here I sit playing it today. I'm not complaining--I just have no idea how long it will last. I could assume it will just be until offical launch on Sept. 1st, but I find nothing saying that I should even be able to play right now without owning a copy of the game.

Someone said that subscribers were let into the head start. One said it was accidental, and that their access would be turned off. I dunno. But I expect when Sept 5 comes around and the beta keys expire you'll have to buy the game.
