While I understand that there have to be some restrictions, and some immature players would find it fun to make offensive names. However I think the current filter is a bit to inflexible.
To illustrate I tried to create a chatter named Nightshade, which is not allowed. And why is that, because “hade” is the last 4 letters of shade!

Actually Shade in general is blocked. And Nightshade is likely blocked for the same reason, both are characters names owned by DC. Same reason Captin Marvel is restricted along with Superman, Spiderman, and loads of others. Of course in the case of the lesser know guys like Shade and Nightshade I wish they'd relax the filter some.

Yeah, I wanted to make "Queen of Spades" but apparently that's using reserved words.

Got struck by this myself when I wanted to name one of my characters Ozymandias, which I suspect is banned due to Watchmen. This is of course quite stupid, since you can't copyright a name, you can only copyright a concept. I could, technically, create a character called the Hulk, as long he doesn't look like... well, the Hulk. I could also, technically, make a character that looks just like Superman, as long as that character isn't called Superman. Problem here is that whoever it is that decides what names are allowed and what names aren't apparently hasn't done his research, which means less fun for the players.

It's not copyright. It's a trademark. You can trademark a name. So I couldn't start a band called the Beatles, for example.
I tried making a female character named Lightning Lass, a nice wholesome old-school superhero name but noooo.... and I think I know why. :(

Yeah, they really need to fix that... Legitimate words being banned because they CONTAIN a bad word if you break them down is stupid.
Although, Lightning Lass is a DC comics character. :P

Why not just mess around with the spelling and pick a phonetically similar name? For instance "Niteshade" or "Pheenix/Phoeniks?" I know we all want to create that perfect character but compromising on the spelling of a name isn't too much to ask for I think.

Exactly, and everyone loves to hang with xXxWolfereenxXx , 0zymand1as, Bl8de, and the wonderful original character Bat.Man.
