View Full Version : So Much For Headstart

This isn't really a question as to more of a concern.

I pre-ordered from Gamestop two weeks ago and when I went in today to get my beta/headstart code, they said that they had 6 pre-orders and only received 3 keys and that it was first-come, first-serve. This is complete bull****. I called them about a week ago to let me know when they get them in and they didn't call me. I want my freakin' beta key. This is unfair and Gamestop should be blown up.

Yeah I am pretty sure they were shipped 6 keys but 3 got 'lost' in shipment somehow... totally not there fault happens all the time.

Yeah seems Gamestop has been failing pretty badly on this whole head start key thing.

Cryptic is to blame too as far as I'm concerned. Both companies planned poorly for the headstart event. I'm not sure about anyone else but if I have a company and I want to partner with another company for a promotional event I would have a contract drawn up that explained each parties obligations in explicit detail with clear consequences if those obligations are not met. This whole process seems very unprofessional to me.

It's more of Gamestops fault because most of the employees are lazy gamers and don't do their job right. I've shopped at Gamestop for a long time and they never do anything right. They've never called me to let me know when my games are there or any of that crap.

When I asked if they had my key, one of the employees opened up one of the wall cabinets where they keep all their pre'orders and demos and whatnot, and it was a catastrophe. Everything just fell out. The boxes were smashed and dented and there were demos from games that came out months ago.

Yes, so it's Cryptic's fault that of the six pre-order keys they provided, three of them turned into 'shrinkage' (if you don't know what that is, you've never worked retail). I've worked in these stores (granted, 20 years ago when EBGames was 'Electronics Boutique') but I happen to recall an extremely hot game then (Super Mario 3) that the salepeople (myself included) got for free, with the store manager's blessing. The difference was, pre-orders were sacred but once they were taken care of, it was open season.

I bet if they tracked those three "missing" keys, they'd find that they're in use right now. I'd almost guarantee it, in fact.

This whole thing resulted from everyone wanting something unique. Each retailer wanted something that folks could only get by buying from them. Wal-Mart seems to have drawn the short straw though. But some kind of restitution should be offered considering the fact that for many people, the ONLY reason they purchased the game from a particular retailer was to get in on the head start. If all pre-orders were created equally, I'm pretty sure Booger, for one, wouldn't have preordered from Gamestop (given the experiences with them).

Okay, well that clears out how my Age of Conan's Collector's Edition didn't have the art book, when I bought it from Gamestop. I never got a refund, so I stopped using Gamestop's services.

I can't understand why some game companies favor Gamestop, since it is obvious they are only making things harder. Obviously they know something about PR and know how to babble utter bullsh*t to publishers, since the company haven't been buried yet.

I believe you. My point is that even though this may be gamestops fault there are clearly no consequences for not following through with their part of the agreement. It should also be understood that when Cryptic decides to partner with them any of gamestops actions directly reflect upon Cryptic.

The way they present the keys is unsecure too. My key came from a Gamestop on a postcard-size card with the key in plain view. A lot of people are getting "key already in use" when using their keys. I bet there are some gamestop employees out there who ebayed them and/or gave out keys to their friends.

This wasn't a well thought out process.

Do not listen to that nonsense. You can not get into the early start with just "any" beta key and/or a subscription. Early access is only granted if you preorder through a select few retailers.

I used that site too. If what you are saying is true then that would help a lot of people out but we'd like to be certain that you're not mistaken. Are you absolutely positive you never used another beta key? If it is true then there is a lot of misinformation going around.

I would say this is gamestops fault. I preorderd from best buy and when I asked them about it the very good best buy CS rep appears to have gone into the werehouse and found me a boxed preorder key then mailed it to me. I just put it in 3 minutes ago and am patching it. This was definitely something with the vendor not Cryptic.

I don't want to upset you so I apologize for asking this but are you absolutely sure that the only beta activation code you used was from that French site? You never entered a code from gamestop, bestbuy, or any other place?

Yeah, I would advise not going to Gamestop for anything unless it is your last resort. I recently called in for a game and was told they had their last copy. So then I drove there only to find them still looking and they only found the case without the CD. (Behind the cashier-desk was a mess of CD's in those paper flaps)
I never did get that game that they claimed they had.

On the other note, you are saying that with the 6-month supscription you can play in the headstart without pre-ordering?

For those search-challenged people, a quote from the head start FAQ which, although not written by a dev, is compiled from Dev quotes and was complimented and sticked by Daeke.

Q. I pre-ordered the game. Can I get in the head start?

A. You only get in the head start if you pre-ordered from Gamestop, Best Buy, or one of the European retailers. Pre-orders from Walmart, Amazon (in the U.S.), and other North American retailers entitled you to the open beta, but not to the head start.

So i daresay you got your pre-order key from a "European Retailer".
Otherwise... grats man you beat the system. You're not supposed to be in head start. Hope you don't get deactivated.

It really works thank you for the tip.

I have a D2D Open Beta Key and subscribed for a 6 month period.
In my account the status says pending retail. No more server offline message, I could load the latest patch and I'am creating my hero right now. :-)

So trust him it works.
I'am pleased and I bet Cryptic is as well since they hooked me for 6 month.

Yah but where are you guys getting your original beta keys from?

Open or Closed Beta keys you should be asking.

If you had a Closed Beta key it automatically got you into the Open Beta.

And only pre-orders in the US that get in are from Best Buy and Gamestop. While several European retailers pre-orders gets you in to the headstart. Most of the info is there its just that no ones been actually reading it.

I had a Closed Beta key and a pre-order from Best Buy so I got into the headstart. I also have purchased a lifetime subscription but if I don't apply a retail key before September 6th I lose access to the game. We hope to get our retail copies either the 2nd or 3rd.

no. I mean the people who are ordering from D2D. And able to get into the head start with a 6 month sub. Where are they getting their open beta key? You still need to enter a key to play. Where did that key come from if you did not order from bestbuy or from gamestop. Fileplanet? The french site? Did D2D send one in the order confirmation?

I was in the closed and open betas. I pre-ordered from Amazon (US). I am playing in the Head Start. So, something is different from the stated ways to get into the head start, whether it's being in the beta or who you pre-ordered from, I don't know.
