View Full Version : Where are my pre-order items?!

There's been a bit of confusion over how/when you receive the exclusive items that your retailer is providing you. Here's the full explanation:
US: All special items are tied directly to the retail keys you type in when you have the physical game box (or the downloaded copy) in your hand. Pre-order keys only gave you access to Open Beta, and (if applicable) the Early Start. The items will appear in-game when you activate your retail key. Therefore, you will not have access to your pre-order items during the Early start.
EU: All pre-order items are directly tied to your pre-order key. Therefore, you will have access to your pre-order items during the Early Start.
As you see, there's a nice discrepancy between the two regions. These were deals made with retailers which were far beyond our control, and so all I can do is offer an apology that it worked out this way. We're going to do our best to ensure that this doesn't work out this way in the future.
UPDATE: More information, as requested.
The script to give everyone their rewards for participating in the End of Beta event is currently running. It will take quite a while to run (possibly all day), so people will be receiving them slowly throughout the day. I'll let you know when all have been distributed.
The Defender action figure will appear in your inventory approximately a week after launch. Again, we'll let you know when it's been done.

I'm not as concerned with when I'll get them as knowing whether they're retroactive.
That is, when I do enter my code next week, will my currently created Headstart character get the stuff, or will I have to reroll?

I guess that makes the flying perk at level 0 instead of 5 a complete waste, not even a great idea anyway, you are level 5 before you can ever get to a power house to train. Guess it might be good for a few alts though.

Actually I was looking forward to the lvl 1 flight power (which is totally useless to any characters I create during early start unless they somehow give it to existing characters).
There were 2 reasons I bought from Gamestop:
1) Early access
2) The first character I wanted to make includes swinging as a travel power as part of the concept, so I thought the additional flight at early levels would be very useful since swinging is fun, but flight has great utility.

I'm in the EU, and ordered from Play.com. These are the pre-order bonuses they provide:
# Neutronium Shoulder Generators - Twin shoulder generators for power-armored heroes, which emit only trace amounts of toxic radiation.
# Insectoid Airfoil - Flaps up to 90 times per second, and is ideal for the high-flying hero.
# Inborn Tenacity - Damage resistance to Physical Damage types and small chance of a 10's effect that will improve your damage resistance.
Now, the Airfoil and shoulderpads costume parts were unlocked the moment I logged in on live. That's all good. But for the life of me I cannot find the Inborn Tenacity which is the actual useful bit. I'd be happy with it as a power or a device, but I can't find it at all. I may well simply not be looking in the right place, but I've run out of ideas.

I do think this needs to be clarified with Gamestop at least. While I understand, albeit don't agree with, the idea of having the perks tied to the retail key, they're sending out E-mails stating that the pre-order key had the tie-ins with the perks.
Here's a quote from the e-mail I recieved at Gamestop: *Bonus pre-order items, will be automatically attached to your account upon entry of your pre-order code. In addition, if you have purchased Game Time Cards, 6-Month Subscriptions, Lifetime Subscriptions, or are eligible for additional promotional items, codes for these programs may be entered through the same process. Multiple promotional and game time codes can be added to a single account (although only a single retail code may be attached). Bonus in-game items will be accessed in one of three ways:

You guys need to coordinate better with retailers how the pre-order system works. I purchased mine from Best Buy, and I still don't have a pre-order key to play headstart. I still have an open beta game, but since I'm not at my computer at this time, I have no idea if I still have access. Something is being sent to me in the mail, but I don't know if contains either the key or the figurine or whatever.

Aye.Now I check, I actually got the coglike "Kendrium Shoulderpad" which is fine by me. I picked play.com for the insectoid airfoils, so I didn't pay much attention to the shoulderpads, and every pre-order seemed to have some sort of defensive power, so I didn't mind which one. I would like ONE of them though. Maybe the pwers really are tied to our retail key, but it would be weird to seperate them like that.

only have myself to blame tho, just got court up in the moment and went 'I MUST HAVE NAAAOOOOWWW!!' and just amused that i would get head start seeing as just about every other purchase option does. so let this be a lesson DONT BUY FROM D2D! you will never get as good a deal as somewhere else.

US: Therefore, you will not have access to your pre-order items during the Early start.
The "confusion" comes from Gamestop's deliberately misleading information and advertisements. They have told us before and after the sale that we will have access to these items during the Head Start program. Just this morning Gamestop preorder customers received an e-mail containing this:
SUBJECT: Champions Online Head Start Information from GameStop
Bonus pre-order items, will be automatically attached to your account upon entry of your pre-order code.
Special costume pieces may be added to your character during character creation, available in the Treasure Chest tab on the far right.
You need to make this right. Given how many thousands this affects, YOU need to be contacting Gamestop and getting it fixed. This is a terrible error and you shouldn't be dropping the ball.

How can you feel cheated? D2D never offered the headstart. The different perks each retailer offered were clearly advertised on their respective sites and there were a couple of threads players posted that contained the complete list of retailers and what each one offered with their version of the pre-order.
It isn't even uncommon for retailers to offer different perks because they are competing with each other for your business. Best Buy doesn't want you going to Gamestop or D2D. A smart shopper takes his time to look around before handing over his cash.
Heck I cancelled my Gamestop pre-order because I wanted D2D's mechano thingy more than I wanted to fly or play in the early start.
I'm sorry to say this but if you simply assumed you'd get into the head start then you only have yourself to blame.

I was just curious why we aren't getting the level one flight in early start because the way this is worded off Cryptic's very own site...It sounds as if we get access to the beta, early program, and level one flight, and the rest of the stuff comes with the retail code...

After reading the forums all day and being a Direct2Drive customer.. It seems like this "head-start" launch has been a fiasco of sorts. Some things didn't seem to be thought through all the way..
I think they only way Cryptic can make good on this is by giving everyone everything or nothing. So many problems for people, it would be a quick fix. Let the D2D people in, fix the pre-order items and just give all of them to everyone to be fair. It's not like you lose anything. You get what you bought, PLUS the other stuff. Anyone who pre-ordered should be treated the same now that this has blown up this much.

Part of the mystery of retail advance orders can go back to how they function.. as an evolved version of the ubiquitous RAIN CHECK for out of stock or physically present in store to order merchandise.
IF you on-line only you'er hostage to the whims of their data base not Cryptics.
I liked a time when you could order direct from a Boutique IPO at a warehouse counter and pick it up.
Or have an actual document binding them to a shipping date through the Postal Service that has the Inspectors guarantee that its tracked and protected by A Law.
With Cryptic's Fine product you have to consider the amount of work they had to go through with distributeurs to pass mundane things like Customs inspection forms. Customs Decalogue's.. and EU v
North American rules.
I prefer letting Jr play on the internet but Like a Physical invoice and not have to rely on the Website to keep my credit information secure.. So the Top up cards look great if they are about like a pay as you go cellphone and not some SOE or Compuserve Debit without services provides issues occurring.

It is a shame I wont be able to fly at lv 1 for my main character, but that is irrelevant, rather easy to reach lv 5 anyway. But I have a question as I saw people talking about it, having the lv 1 flight means you get to pick other 2 travel skills later on?? So you will have 3 of them in the end?
Also, is it possible to respec this flight? or it is a special flight skill that can't be respec and changed into another travel skill.

Further, the package stated that you got EA and bonus items, but now its only on the 29th and "within stock limits" which means some customers won't get them, randomly. And in that case, you won't get access till the 7th, "due to stocks" !!

To make things even more confusing, I received this email from GameStop this morning:
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for pre-ordering Champions Online from GameStop.com. The Early Start Program gives pre-order customers a chance to get in the game early, and participate in a one time only in-game event featuring unique challenges and rewards. Starting at 10am PST on August 28, the Open Beta servers will be wiped, and the Head Start servers will go online.
If you used a pre-order code to gain access to the Open Beta, you will automatically receive access to the Head Start program. Simply log in with your existing account information, and you will be ready to play upon completion of the patcher.
If you did not participate in the Open Beta, or you gained access to the Open Beta without a pre-order code, follow these simple steps…
1. Log in with your username at www.Champions-Online.com (if you do not have a Champions Online login, go to https://www.champions-online.com/user/register or simply click “Register” on the home page to create an account).
2. Click the “Enter Key” image in the top right of the screen and update your account with your pre-order code.*
3. If you participated in any phase of beta, simply patch your client to the latest version and you’re ready to go!
4. If you do not have the Champions client installed visit http://files.champions-online.com/installers/Champions_Online.exe, install the client and see step 1.
5. Head Start is active from 10am PST on August 28 until the servers go live at 10am on September 1. Please note that you will need to secure your retail copy and add your retail code to your account to continue playing after the grace period expires on September 4th.
*Bonus pre-order items, will be automatically attached to your account upon entry of your pre-order code.
* Special costume pieces may be added to your character during character creation, available in the Treasure Chest tab on the far right.
* Activate and deactivate an action figure in-game by clicking on your character portrait, selecting info, and clicking on the action figure icon located in the Action Figures tab.
* Functional Items can be redeemed via the Cryptic Store: click on the menu button on your mini-map, select C Store, and purchase them – they’re priced at zero Cryptic Points, just for you.
If, after following these steps you are still having problems, please contact the Cryptic Support team at www.champions-online.com/support
Thank you,
GameStop Customer Service

Since you asked, I'll tell you why...
So that you can take a more entertaining travel power (like swinging) at level 5 rather than waiting until lvl 35 because you feel like you'll be passing up the utility of flight.

The advertised head start program was the only reason I ordered throug GameStop instead of D2D so I canceled the order rather than wasting my head start time trying to sort it out with GameStop.
I enjoyed the game during open beta but at this point, the pre-order has been such a nightmare, I'm giving up on this game. It is more trouble then its worth I think.

Why don't you get over yourself and spare us another lecture? It was not "clearly advertised" that D2D did not offer headstart. Why don't you offer something helpful rather than your soap box drivel?

Bonus pre-order items, will be automatically attached to your account upon entry of your pre-order code.
* Special costume pieces may be added to your character during character creation, available in the Treasure Chest tab on the far right.
* Activate and deactivate an action figure in-game by clicking on your character portrait, selecting info, and clicking on the action figure icon located in the Action Figures tab.
* Functional Items can be redeemed via the Cryptic Store: click on the menu button on your mini-map, select C Store, and purchase them – they’re priced at zero Cryptic Points, just for you.
Well here is my question ,
Multiple promotional and game time codes can be added to a single account (although only a single retail code may be attached)
even though i need a retail key to get my rewards but i added game stop and best buy pre orders .
so will i get benignity for them when i add a retail key ? may be from walmart ?
also , honestly , if i have pre oder , why do i have to wait for 4 days to get acess to it .
i mean lvl 1 flight , what am i going to do with it in 4 days when i can use it , being that i am lvl 16 already ???
i mean i already have a travel power and the whole thing of running through the tutorial faster doesnt seem to be helping .
plus i ordered a life time sun . my account only has 8 slots . i am supposed to have 8 extra aka 16 .... still missing them though the life time sub awards have been granted.

As you see, there's a nice discrepancy between the two regions. These were deals made with retailers which were far beyond our control, and so all I can do is offer an apology that it worked out this way. We're going to do our best to ensure that this doesn't work out this way in the future.
why would i want to pre order a game in future which i already pre ordered right now ??

Agreed. Its a hassle and been a huge pain in the ass and waste of time. Beta was fun and I wanted to give it a shot, but if Cryptic can't make amends or acknowledge the poor decisions behind its choice in partners. instead of saying its "their fault" then Ill wait for **** or another mmo
For the record I pre ordered from one of their partners <gamestop> and didnt receive ****, only to be told they do not have the keys, both on the phone and at the stores.

Just want to spew my 2-cents in this thread, as I hadn't noticed it before. I fell victim to thinking that I could pre-order from gamestop as Cryptic's website still states and take advantage of the early start program. Anyhoo, my rant from another thread:
"Welp. Guess I'm a douche. I just pre-ordered, following the link from Cryptic's website that offered me the early-access program, through Gamestop and Try-not-to-fail-Media, and no key.
For those giving the ol' "buck up, it's not <insert company name>'s fault you waited so long, shoulda bought retail" lines of crap, I say this: As a consumer, who's business is sought after enough to spend thousands of dollars and man hours on sucking me in with hawt webpages and slickety prmotions, why at the moment that I have pledged my business and money must you utterly FAIL?!
It is absolutely ludicrous to imply that as consumers we should not hold the businesses that supposedly need us so vitally accountable when they fail to deliver. If we should not expect follow through on the promise, then it is a lie. A company that lies to you to obtain you business absolutely owes recompensation.
Cryptic owes for not caring enough on the day of thier big promotional launch to ensure that the content, ESPECIALLY content that will lead to a purchase, is accurate. This is supposed to be crunch-day for these guys, and nobody is at the wheel.
Gamestop owes for not being involved more in it's partner's practices. I work for a software company that runs an online business service as well. There is not a MINUTE that we do not know the happenings and dealings of our partners. If there is an issue impacting mutual customers we tend to know when, if not before the partner does.
And, finally, Try-but-FailMedia owes. Who the hell doesn't staff a 24/7 online downlaod game service......24/7?!!! I can't call these yuks when they have a hand in fekking up my purchase?! The email submittal says I will have a reply in "24-48 hours".......by monday. Awesome. Do they handle all launch promos with such urgency?
If you are a stinged consumer, remember: YOU ARE THE CONSUMER! Email and call EVERY ONE OF THESE ARSE-HOLES! Use EVERY MINUTE you would have used enjoying your purchase as promised to make an employee there as miserable, if not more than you are. You have the wallet, so you have the right!"
I truly hope Cryptic emplyees frequent this segment of the forums more. Really, it shows an absolute lack of customer focus to know this is currently going on during your launch event and not respond to it.

What's up with the US getting screwed?
It seems stupid offering pre-order items AND the head-start program, but not including one with the other. I was looking forward to using my beginning flight in the tutorial, but most of my characters are going to be created and through it by the time retail hits.
I don't mind waiting for the other items, but I was looking forward to that, and was disappointed that we didn't have it yet. And yes, I agree with others, that it should have been explained with the bonus items on the Gamestop/EB Games sites, let alone the emails that we received.
**
Noting, though, that it will still be nice having the additional option of two travel powers much earlier in the game.

"US: All special items are tied directly to the retail keys you type in when you have the physical game box (or the downloaded copy) in your hand. Pre-order keys only gave you access to Open Beta, and (if applicable) the Early Start. The items will appear in-game when you activate your retail key.
I may well simply not be looking in the right place, but I've run out of ideas.
i wish i had known of that place im in canada but would have still got that shipped instead (got the best buy and EBgames/Gamestop versions i could have got it there and got the insect airfoild AND more outfit parts >.<
that inborn tenacity seems like something thats inherant at lv 10 from the way its written but i dont know

You use the flight by:
Applying your retail code to your account.
Opening the in-game C Store.
Going to Specials.
Getting the boots from there for free.
Binding boots like any gadget (which also adds it to the Alt travel power slot).
Click the gadget slot or use alt-t. The boots turn on and you can move a moderate distance vertically. To go higher, you need to touch another "jumpable" surface. That basically means any surface which is interpreted as ground or a hill which lets you walk on it. Once you touch one, you can move the same vertical distance. I was able to get above the cloud lines of Millennium City with the boots. It was slow going and took some tricky stuff to do, but it's possible. Just... don't expect to get there in a hurry. XD

The "Champions" Icon on the top-left bit of the minimap opens a menu, on that menu is the C Store. Unfortunately, I read something earlier about the C Store being down for awhile. No idea when it will be working again.
This is pretty disappointing so far. If I'd known what a joke the "special headstart invasion event" would be, that the "level 0 Flight" isn't really flight, just a low altitude hover... I woulda skipped the gamestop mess and gone through Best Buy. At least then I'd have an action figure that interests me.
The game is competently made and all, and runs reasonably well, but these first few days are not inspiring the warm fuzzies about buying a lifetime sub. Hopefully things improve soon. At least they made efforts to fix that silly (limited number available" snafu with the subscription purposes...
Think I'm gonna log onto CoH for a while until they get stuff sorted out.

other custom promotional items show w/I a week of shipping/Launch in inventory.. for one to equip
however as it is now they are tied to the first toon you create if they can use them or not.. as their framework/builds may vary they would require a respec in some cases.. or a GM CSR assistance to remedy.
in my case the pre-orders were sold out so Backordering a pre-order that came after launch was pointless.. as siblings flaunt their Chibis.. I have none.
Eh, post #1 kind of suggests the opposite.
Just to highlight the issue.
EU: All pre-order items are directly tied to your pre-order key. Therefore, you will have access to your pre-order items during the Early Start.
Nope, so is there a post elsewhere that's in contradiction to this post, is it just plain old borked?

How did you access the 0 level flight? And oh yeah, the value of my lifetime sub looks shaky

So, it sounds like your saying that in order to use say, the lvl 1 flight ability on an already created character I have to do a full respec before I will have access to it.
Is that accurate or did I misread something?
Also, any new characters I make should have access from the start right?
I don't need to respec my other characters before new ones can have access?
If any of its accurate, this is highly screwy.

I put the airfoil on an alt and there was no 0 level flight to it. just another peice for the back the closest thing i got was the andi grav boots i got from the c store for free. however, it looks neat for an insect based character and i got him flight at level 5 anyway.

I Pre-Ordered from Game Stop. I guess I should feel lucky that doing so entitled me to participate in the head start. But the set of "Insectoid Wings" I was supposed to get as a "Bonus" are completely BOGUS!
It's simple really, THEY DO NOT WORK! They were supposed to be a "device" that allowed flight at level 1. Well if they do, then HOW DO YOU GET THEM TO WORK???????
I know that the one thing you absolutely cannot do is expect Cryptic to tell you how they work. Either via the "Support" section of this website (which directed me to contact a GM in game), or by trying to "Contact a GM"! As obviously, though the website support personnel are busy, the GMs are even busier...
Result: I'm of the opinion that their "BONUS ITEMS" were all just a SCAM. Which makes me Angry. I feel lied to and cheated. And to add injury to insult, they then NERFed the living crap out of us on Launch Day. So overall I'd rate Cryptic's performance on a 1-10 scale at about .... 3! And I seriously doubt I'll subscribe past the initial six months. And I sure as Hell will NOT PLAY Star Trek Online.

The Flight I think comes from the Anti-Grav Boots you access from the C-Store. You get them then you can put them on and fly.
The Insectoid Wings are just costume piece they do not provide the flight.

I did the Pre-order from Best Buy and I've got my Grond action figure, but no damage resistance item - and yes I checked both tabs of the C-Store. Any word on this one?
Yeah, Ditto this...I got Grond but no Damage resist items...What Gives?

Same here. I placed a ticket on this issue yesterday, and signed on today and saw it was marked as resolved and got this as a reply:
Thu, 09/03/2009
Thank you very much for taking the time to submit this bug report.
Your issue has been processed and entered into our bug database. We generally review all bug reports we receive within one day.
Unfortunately, due to the number of reports we receive, we are unable to respond to each report individually. If you do require individual assistance from our support staff, please submit a GM Help request and we will attempt to contact you in-game as soon as possible.
Now, while this is not a blatant 'bug off' the fact that the issue is marked as resolved and I STILL do not have my items is a blatant bug off to me.
Now, I love the game, don't get me wrong there. I enjoy it greatly and if they ever reoffer lifetime memberships again I'll get one. But, if I pay for an item I sure as heck would like to get everything I paid for.
And before anyone asks, yes, I did in fact enter in BOTH my preorder AND my retail keys. So. Can someone tell me, whats going on?
Daeke? Stormshade? Anyone?
