View Full Version : New feature: social media

A new feature for you guys to play with, social media integration.
To start using this system, enter /socialmedia. From this screen you can control the operation of the social media tools. Use the settings button to enroll (or un-enroll) from each service. By default, all available activity types for each service are enabled once enrolled. Uncheck any of the boxes to disable that activity type for that service.
The Status activity type is initiated by the command "/social_status Your status here". The plan is for this to be integrated into the status box in the chat context menu, but for now the command will work.
The Screenshot activity type is initiated by the commands "/social_screenshot <optional title here>" and "/social_screenshot_ui <optional title here>".
The Blog activity type is initiated '/social_blog "Title" "Body"'.
The Level Up activity type is initiated on natural level ups (meaning those from normal XP gains, not sidekicking). For Twitter and Facebook it will post items every 5 levels. For Raptr awards will be posted for every level.
The Perk activity type is initiated by completing a rank 3 or 4 perk (those worth more then 25 points).
The Item activity type is initiated by receiving a purple item.
The Supergroup activity type is initiated by creating, joining, or leaving a supergroup (including being kicked). The posted message with include the character and supergroup name.
If you guys find any problems with it, or have suggestions for things you would like to see added please let us know.

It is an opt-in service. If you don't link the game to your accounts it doesn't work.
I made a special facebook page for it to play around with, but so far it won't upload creen shots or even change my status.

Personally I think the social screenshot feature is the most appealing, especially as gamers mix socially outside of games or as more casual gamers enter the foray. The levelups seem a bit much but again, I can see the appeal depending on who you socialize with.
Big Kudos for pioneering, if nothing else. At least these game updates beat seeing someone's Bejewelled or Farmville update.

Okay, this is awesome and I've been intrigued by this ever since I first saw the announcement. But I'm very unfamiliar with these various social networking sites. Could the Twitter one (or any of them) be used as sort of a game-to-website interface? For instance, if a website were set up with a Twitter feed that collected all the members of a supergroup, could one of those players tweet something like, "Running xyz missions" and another tweet "Kicking back in the club" and have those both pop up in the website interface for any visitors popping by?

coderanger is .... a coder. He doesnt develop content, he isnt part of the powers team, he doesnt do art. He writes bits of code. The initial code for the twitter got this same reaction and it was pointed out that this is exactly his job and it took a small amount of time to do.

Hey Coderanger, thanks for making this fantastic optional feature in CO, I think some of us really appreciate it.
As far as I can tell most of the basic stuff for facebook is working but in order to get it working, it takes a tad of understanding what is going on. It works but it is sorta confusing. I think a user guide would be much appreciated (from the developers or player written)
I would also like to ask for a feature if possible:
The screenshot posting thing is fantastic but I would like some sorta in-game cropping of the image...Sorta like LittleBigPlanet in game screen shot function where one could frame the screenshot before taking in.

Hey coderanger, I just had a great idea! Why not take a social_screenshot when sending updates like perks, and leveling so you can see what was going at the time? Then the feature would act like you own little comic for your character, which would be awesome!
would that be possible?

Would it be possible to have an option to make your settings account wide? The enrollment thing makes perfect sense, but I thought that if i set my preferences up once it would carry over to every toon and this resulted in some Twitter spam last night. Perhaps just make this another tab, or button in a tab of your main options and have them carry through just like your graphics settings. On a related note, keybinds really should be treated this way as well. At least I think so.

Like, if you set your status, the chat box says "Social networking status successfully set!" or for a screenshot "Screenshot with (or without) UI successfully uploaded to social networks!"
... something like that.. Just so we're not typing into the void, as it were...

Theoretically, this can be done. I've been thinking through how to do this, if and when I start or join a supergroup. Most of the open source CMS engines (drupal, joomla, mambo) have plug-ins/modules for twitter, so it should be relatively easy to set something up.
You could always start a group on Facebook, limit membership to your SG members, and have an instant SG webpage. The possibilities are quite fascinating!

Not to be a whiney ***** (ok thats probably a lie) but do you reckon we could get some bodgy interface for this? Or at least for the blogging feature since composing anything larger than a tweet is going to be annoying at best on a chat line. :p
Would also be nice if the screenshot would popup a UI with a caption request if you don't provide one on the command (so i can bind it to alt-printscreen and have it ask what caption). Alternatively a command that doesn't take a command line and instead take the caption from a small popup would work.
If we had scripting access i'd have written it by now :P (just sayin ;) )
There's another possibility I'd like but it requires more effort to make use of. Having said that, it'd be nice if we could have a generic "interface"(but kind of in reverse) for working with this. The idea would be essentially when setting it up, you give a URL to go to. The program would then send specially crafted requests to that URI for all of the possible options. That way whatever is configured at the URI can decide how to deal with it. Error messages would be ignored (with the possible exception of the screenshot one which could send one request setting up the file transfer and then only actually send the file in the second request if it gets a 200 OK (just to save on bandwidth) ).
Main reason I request this is because facebook is so anal about things like names etc. I'd much rather if i could link it to a blog of my choosing (and i figure it's easier for you to write an api and let me worry about implementing it than implementing it for N different types of blogs etc...). If you did fulfill this i wouldn't be expecting much out of the API. Pretty much something along the lines of a straight push request with parameters along the lines of type, title, body, maybe image (if you want to include things like providing image links of perk badges or items).
P.S. no i'm not expecting you to do the last bit... but i can dream can't I? :)
P.P.S Regarding security. given that this is intended to be mixing with personal URIs passwords aren't so big a deal. Perhaps an arbitrary lengthed shared secret with Date and some extra salt appended and then SHA1ed? (i.e. <secret>:<salt>:<date in YYYYMMDD format> and then sha1ed. Naturally salt would be sent with the request) that way the onus is on the script to check the secret and neither sends anything cleartext.

Please forgive me I have a couple dumb newbie questions about this now that I've started blogging on one character and plan to on others in the future.
1) Is the blog space for a character given a particular URL or is it simply embedded as part of the character profile in My Characters? Do I need to connect that character blog to a real blog site or twitter or facebook or something in order for it to post outside of the My Champions profile pages?
2) How do I view *other* people's character blogs? Is there a place I can find them and read them where they are all listed? I would like to see what my fellow Champions are up to out there.
Sorry for the newb questions not really done much with all the social networking online stuff til now.

Currently there are a limited number of social network options and on all of them you configure a username and password which is apparantly character specific.
2) How do I view *other* people's character blogs? Is there a place I can find them and read them where they are all listed? I would like to see what my fellow Champions are up to out there.
You would have to find them in whatever social network chosen. There is not and i daresay will never be a cryptic list of accounts. Such would be a breach of privacy.

I would like to be able to post to the Champions character blog from within the game; the limited space available in one line perfectly suits my character's scatter-brained thought processes.
I absolutely love the idea in general.

Screenshots on FB are a little too small. A small annoyance: each step in the FB authentication process opens a new browser window. Just have the link in the game use the same browser window. CO is hard enough on systems without turning a 4-click process into a 5 minute lagfest as your PC tries to open a new browser for each one. Otherwise the integration was smooth. I do wish i could see some kind of control options on FB itself. If there are application settings or permissions anywhere on FB for this I didn't find them.
Interesting concept, more fourth wall breakage. I like it. Not sure how desirable it will be for players to showcase just exactly how deeply nerd-tastic they truly are to all their friends and family but hey.

I'm wondering. Is there a way to take the picture without all the extra menu and chat options on it? I think it takes away from the picture when you have all that extra stuff in it.

Facebook automatically scales all photos that are too large.

So I was looking over the code today and noticed the Twitter perk function had the wrong threshold. I'm turning that and Facebook down, and turning Raptr up to where Twitter was. This should reduce the spamminess a good bit. Coming Soon to a patch near you :-)
Yes because that being patched is far more important than fixing whats wrong with the gameplay right now

use screenshot variants rather than screenshotui or screenshot_ui variants.

Okay maybe I wasnt clear on that one. Cryptic is providing us a way to roleplay and dig deeper into the world by allowing us Character Blogs in our My Champions area. This allows us to write a lot of nifty stories about our characters and things. That means people are deliberately and willfully like any other blog putting information out there to be read by others on the web.
If you go to wordpress or any other blog or social networking site you can always see what sorts of things other people are doing, latest and most popular blogs, etcetc unless the people specifically set their account settings to more private modes.
What I was asking was whether or not there is in fact a website or some other way I'm not seeing at the moment to see what other stories people have written about their characters using the Champions Online My Champions Blog Posting ability so when I run around the game I can go, "Oh yea! I heard stories about that hero!"
Personally I'm using the feature to flesh out backgrounds and origin stories of my various characters because the deep character generation inspires me to want to write more about the Champions I've made which I think is the whole point of why they developed the system this way to begin with. I use the short 500 char bio limit to give a short overview.
I was not in any way shape or form indicating Cryptic should be posting other people's account information or breach privacy regulations or whatever. I hope that was more clearly stated.

Yes, we are continuing to develop the social features on our website and there are a number of things like this in pipeline. A lot of that stuff got slid back back in favor of more launch critical stuff. As we come down off the crunch time insanity, we will be able to get back to this kind of "just for fun" stuff here and there :-)

Hey everyone, I'm happy to see people excited about this feature.
I'm the Community Manager at Raptr.com - if you have any questions or comments about the feature please let me know.
I'm going to play mini-salesman right now and advertise Raptr for a bit.
Raptr is the only social network out of the 4 that stores your achievements and allows you to compare them with your friends. We also track and display your Champions Online gameplay. This is on top of all of our existing functionality. Please check it out!
You can contact me at Raptr - Raptr.com/Boxhead, or you can add me in-game. My character name is Boxhead :p. I'll also be periodically stopping by here.
Hope you're all enjoying Champions!

Wait , do we have to type /socialmedia whilst playing the game to enable this social stuff?
Is there a public API? Can I access character data from Champions Online via my own scripts?
Thanks,

Anyone else getting a "Twitter error: 408"? when trying to post?No idea. I get an error about the token that the game attempts to use not working properly when I try to link my account to CO.
Exact error:
"Woah there!
This page is no longer valid. It looks like someone already used the token information you provided. Please return to the site that sent you to this page and try again … it was probably an honest mistake."
Exact URL:
http://twitter.com/oauth/authorize?oauth_token=%28null%29&oauth_callback=oob

When you set up your account, it becomes effective for all characters - but you need to change the individual settings for each character.
Example: Perks come too fast in the early game, so I disabled them. Then when I made a new character, I had to disable them again because my Facebook page was covered in Perk spam again :)

I figured out what it was. I was using a special character in my Twitter password that was obviously causing problems, probably the ">" character. Changing my password to keep it strictly alpha-numeric resolved the issue.

I was getting those too. Make sure you close all browser windows. I think it has to do with being logged into Twitter, or having the session still active. Also closing the browser windows that CO opens to activate your Twitter account seemed to help.
The other error I mentioned previously was not related to special characters in the password (as I had originally thought), as I am still getting it. I believe it has to do with being logged into that twitter account from the same IP address. Still researching...

But but: When will the server be up?
I mean: I can't see my characters, I can't rate them, I can't show them off to my friends.
The rest of the functionality is quite mood, without this, I think.

Yeah, CO doesn't seem to like being minimized or windowed. You could try running CO windowed to start with, and have Firefox running as well, but make sure you are completely logged out of Twitter. Might even need to turn off cookies.

So a paying gold member making a legitimate complaint on a related older forum post (totally new ones I've made have been completely ignored by GMs) is now considered a spammer, even though there was only one post?
I've asked this question before, with no replies made. Finally a GM notices and all they do is give me a yellow card and continue to ignore the issue. Well played Cryptic, well played. ;)
