While of course there is no way to trace it back to them, I've been flooded with spam email on the address I used for Champions since right after the final merger and started getting Perfect World emails. I didn't even think I should have changed my email address here to the one I was already using for PW so I wouldn't have to worry about that.

Is it happening to anyone else? Didn't you, per chance, register to a newsletter on PWE's site?
Or on another game?

Ok I dont think its Cryptic but a lot of game websites sell info ( and shockingly thats legal) to other companies have you signed up with IGN cause we all know you cant spell ignorant without IGN.
They do that.

Nope PW didn't have this email address at all (I used a totally unrelated hotmail junk address for PW) and it is the only "new" company to have gotten the email in the last year and a half. Only 5 companies have this email address. It could be a coincidence, but it is stretching the probability a bit. Email is only checked on secure computers with no viruses and it is the only address to get flooded with spam. My other specific address have not been hit. If even one of the others had this problem I might not have even thought PW.

Odd sounds like thats not the account getting spamed then. Cryptic (and im usually the last one to defend them) cant give out your details due to the fact that credits cards and what not are involved even to a parent company theres a whole lotta legal jargon and stuff.
But obviously they got it from some where any company that has your emails can in theory sell the email address on.

Your right except it is Casino emails though and all through Yahoo (email address and route). I keep sending them spam reports (http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/spam.html). I figure if I'm going to be annoyed because of them so are they. I'm about ready to just to just block all yahoo to that address except it is a little hard because the way it is all setup. What really ticks me off about it is the email address was compromised in the first place and the timing was just too coincidental. There is enough doubt it could have happened another way and nothing I can really do about it if it was the case except warn others if it is ture.
It just seriously gets on my nerves.

Every time you type your e-mail address into a field and submit it, you dramatically increase your likelihood of getting spam. Every. Time.
Every time you have to tell someone to remove you from a mailing list, there is a chance that they have already shared it with someone else. Every. Time.
Every time you use the internet, there is a chance that your contact information has been mined. Every. Time.
Every time you send an e-mail to someone, remember that there is a chance that THEIR e-mail contact list has been compromised by data-miners or the like. Every. Time.

I really don't get what/why everyone is calling PWI e-mails being spam or anything else.
All I've seen in my mailboxes is PWI telling me about upcoming things (like the merger), current happenings (like the current C-Store sale), and other things completely and totally related to CO.
Both of my main e-mail accounts were put onto spammer lists ages ago via who knows how. All I know is that @gmail and @hotmail have pretty good spam filters, keeping 99% of it from ever appearing in my main box.

I've been getting PW emails ever since the merger but that was to be expected since I was a newsletter subscriber for both CO and STO. The content in the emails havn't changed. Edit: I only get emails from PW concerning CO and STO, nothing else.
Now, I find this bit a bit funny, and a little frustrating. I don't know if it is coincidence or what but I've been getting *real* email spam ever since that merger went through. In the 6+ years that I've had my email address I have never, ever, not once, gotten any bit of email spam that I didn't sign up for. I don't pass out my email address like it's candy and I havn't signed up for anything new in a long, long time. This just happen to start around the same time of the PW takeover? Hmmm. :rolleyes:

Like some others here, i allocate a unique email address for each company i have dealings with (I was a bit surprised to find that out, i thought i was a rarity). Since the merger i am recieving scam emails of one sort or another addressed to that email address. This did not happen prior to the merger.
Something has gone wrong.
To those who state "Nope, no emails from PWE, nothing wrong here", you are totally missing the point. Think about it. The scam emails people are complaining about are not FROM PWE, but from the people who have recieved your email addresses (without your permission), and they recieved your email addresses from someone at PWE/Cryptic Studios.
Think about it this way... If your mobile phone provider passed/sold your telephone number to sales and marketing cold callers in other companies would you expect annoying calls to come from your mobile phone provider? No. So checking your emails for spam from PWE is a bit dumb.
Also, if you use the same email address for every company you have dealings with, you will struggle to know who is being responsible with your information, and who isn't. Those who use a seperate and unique address for each company, wont struggle in that regard.
PWE/Cryptic have slacked in their responsibility to protect user info, our email details specifically. If that doesn't bother you, fine. It does me.

This does not follow (and is a rather serious allegation that really shouldn't be made without proof).
It could just as easily be
* intercepted email
* faked email headers
* email exposed on e.g. yahoo groups or in mass-mail.
There are a number of other plausible explanations that doesn't involve malice on the part of Cryptic/PWE.
As a side note, I use the same email address for most of my online dealings, and have been doing so for almost a decade. I've not seen any rise in spam to that address since the PWE acquisition. And I would notice, since I do not get more than one or two spam mails per month, if that.
Are you sure you haven't exposed your address in some way?

Its not a serious allegation as such (in the legal sense), and conclusive proof is not possible without an extensive and unlikely investigation on my part. You are quite right about the other possible causes. It is extremely unlikely though and would most likely still imply a lack of security on the senders side (not me). The email addresses i use for each company are not used for anything else, and seeing as i have never emailed Cryptic or PWE (only recieve) its unlikely its any of my "intercepted" emails.
That leaves Cryptic and PWE as the senders to be intercepted. What you seem to miss is the likelyhood of us all suffering the same issue at the same time. If you use specific email addresses for each company you notice very specifically which addresses you get spam to/from, it does not all blur into one big generalisation. This system allows me to tell the diffrerence between a friends machine having been hacked or infected and a company sending me spam because each person i deal with has a different email address for me.
Now, i'm no expert, but i have supported email infrastructures, on both desktop and server side, and i build and configure all my own pc's. I'm an old fashioned advocate of paying for software, not freeware (though i fully approve of the freeware ethos for original software), for things like operating system and anti-virus/security software. I never let my av binaries get out of date and i use the current email system precisely because i am not lazy and do care what happens to my information.
None of the above makes me infallible, granted. But it does mean that there is an issue of legitimate concern, and a forum is the proper way to raise it, as others have. It could be that there are some here jumping on the bandwagon and claiming victim status and want nothing more than to see "the corp" suffer an avalanche of user flames, but i am not one of them. And i suspect that most of those who use the same system i do are not either. People who want to complain for complainings sake do not care enough about legitimate concerns to go to the trouble of using an email system that requires a bit of thought and effort.
Re your comment/question as to whether my email address has been exposed in some way.... Yes, it is possible. I've already said what i suspect has happened. The email address for Cryptic is not static information in my email profile (its not there at all) and i have never used that address to send an email. So the exposure is not on my side.

They dont need to over advertise, their games as a whole are rather good I like Rusty Hearts reminds me of Final Fight :3
