View Full Version : Shouldn't Our Characters Have Voices?

I think having voices would make them a bit more alive. They could be given some choices for the most generic voices, some could have accents, and they will say things that are kind of simple like
Yes
No
Hello
Bye
Thank you
Help me!
Watch out!
Let's go
Wait
=Male Voices=
Average guy
Tough Wolverine Guy (Bub)
Boy Scout Cheesy Hero
Menacing Darth Vader
Russian Voice
Underdeveloped Teen
******** Goon
Boastful
Evil Intellect Lex Luthor
Kid
Gentleman
British Voice
Irish Accent
Hulk Caveman
Deep, low Demonic
Demonic with echo
Southern Accent
Glorious Ironclad Warrior Voice
SAW voice
Gangsta
Lisp...
Robotic
=Female Voices=
Average girl
Sultry poisonous
Stuck up Valley Girl
Dumb Valley Girl
Gangsta
Demonic with Echo
Strong and Dangerous
British Voice
Southern Accent
Evil Intellect Mastermind
Russian Accent
Kid
Irish accent
Glorious Warrior Voice
Robotic
But then again it would have to be a sentence to really bring out the voice's essence... well if there is any way that can be arranged it would be interesting. And of course you don't HAVE to have a voice.

I agree with this motion... But I'm not entirely sure how easily it could be implemented.
At best, I suggest something linked up to the moods.
If you're angry, every attack you do makes your character make a little angry grunt.
If happy, then it'll be the sound of them straining but not angrily.
That kind of thing.
Voices and catchphrases would only really work if there was a voice chat, I suspect...

Voice files tend to be take up a lot of space, if they did this, even with just a few phrases, it would mean a giant patch.
Also, considering how bad a lot of the voice acting has been, I think I'd be happier with a silent protagonist.

In Diablo 2, our characters had 7 buttons that could be used to say different things. I don't remember them all, but they were things like:
"Time to die!"
"Follow me!"
"This is for you."
"Thank you."
And so on. Voice and all. Even if it was as simple as that, it'd be great. Say I'm in a party of 5 and we're in an inside mission looking for something. When one of us finds it, (whether they're in earshot or not,) it could sound off on their computer as me saying, "Follow me!", or "Over here!".
This actually leads to another suggestion. While in a party, I wish there was a way to make the "me arrow" in the minimap blink or change color. Saying, "everyone come to me" means nothing when you don't know which arrow is who.

With the voice acting in this game, I will have to pass. They couldn't possibly capture every mannerism a hero may have, nor the accent or delivery of sentences. I know what my hero sounds like, and I seriously doubt that Cryptic can make a character voice to do it justice.

The problem is that there's really no way to do this in a manner which would satisfy enough people to be worthwhile in the first place. They'd either be too generic or too specific to see the light of day.
Rather, what I'd like to see would be a sort of "weight and fitness" set of sounds. For instance, you could choose to be heavy/solid, normal, light, or none. This choice would determine the sounds of your footfalls and a few other noises - like panting if you are running, or if you're knocked back/hit with a big attack. If you chose solid, perhaps there'd be a heavy thud if you get knocked back, but if you chose light, there's be a more hollow sound. This could also affect certain powers, like the roar/howl power form bestial supernatural, etc.

To be honest im slightly ambivilent about this as in I think its a good idea however I do not think that anyone would be able to capture how I think my characters would sound. if i had a list to choose from perhaps i would strike it lucky and get one that suits them down to a Tee however more oftan than not i would not have that and would end up having to settle for a voice that mismatches my character concept.

This, especially the bolded, would be remedied by giving a "None" option in the voice drop-down.
The griefing/spamming problem is still an issue, though.

Speaking as an actor myself, the voice work on this game is incredibly, unbelieveably bad, and I wouldn't want to have to hear it, either from myself or others.
On the other hand, I wouldn't want to deny it to those that want it. Perhaps a simple volume control for PC voice effects would solve that and the griefing.

That's why I suggested a volume control specific to voice sounds.
In Lord fo the Rings Online, there's a player music system that lets players play actual music. Not everyone wants to hear it, though, so there's a volume control that turns down the music while leaving everything else.
Like I say, if people want this, I wouldn't want to say no to them just because I don't want it. Just let me have a volume control so I can opt out.

You still can, via a keybind.
Just pick a key you want (say, numpad 0), then type: /bind numpad0 say It's Clobberin' Time!
Now, when you press Num 0, you will say It's Colbberin' Time!
I actually have several such binds, one for each of the Numpad keys, each for a different situation.

Voice overs in an MMO are a bad idea, even more so in a game like Champions. One of Champions strengths is the amazing level of customization. That is next to impossible to realistically achieve with voice overs dues to cost, time and just size.
It gets worse however when you start considering expansions of the game down the road. For continuity you will need the same actor to do the voices for each voice over. While with some effort this number could be reduced to get realism it is hard to reduce it to imitation to far.
Also with each new expansion you will need a script, the voice actor, the time to get the lines done and then implement into the animations. The result is a drastic increase in the cost and time needed for each expansion.
I am personally very happy with the way they have been done so far, just oftne enough to enjoy and not so often as to drive you nuts.
Personally I see this as a serious flaw in SWTOR since it will make expansions much more expensive and time consuming.

In order to properly emulate Bluey's voice, I'd have to take Nathan Drake voice clips from the Uncharted games, specifically the ones where he's cooing over a new weapon ("Yesss!"), in over his head ("This is turning out to be a pretty lousy day!"), panicked ("Oh, no nononono!"), or falling to his death. Ooh, or Elijah Wood. He has a nice voice too.
Although I could always do the voice myself. And I'm available for hire if Cryptic is interested in releasing a Bluey Voice Pack for the C-Store.
Joking aside, something like this would be totally awesome, and I approve greatly. You could fight spamming by just disallowing players to use voice commands several times in quick succession, like how TF2 and Left 4 Dead do, and I assume you won't hear people on your ignore list at all.
What I'd love even more, though, are more voice clips for enemies. And that's not just because I sit at my computer mimicking death grunts and screams as I massacre henchmen, ha ha, no sir. I will admit, though, that every time I kill an enemy through falling damage, I imagine them grunting out "I landed on my keys..." once they impact.

'I care a lot.'
O--------------------
'I could not care less'
O-
'I could care less' really doesn't explain where you are on the scale. 'I am capable of caring less' means that you still have 'care' to spend, so you're anywhere between one, and full. The phrase is 'I could not care less.' It is not possible for me to have any less consideration.
Oh, and I agree with the OP. I've always found it odd that my character is a Gordon Freeman mute. Even old school NWN had voice options, and that's over ten years old.

No, this is a common misconception.
The phrase is, in fact, "I could care less." Why it works: In context, the only care that you have about the subject is that you are talking about the subject. By saying you "could care less", you are indicating that you are capable of not talking or thinking about the subject, which is the least amount of caring someone can have about a subject.
By saying "I cannot care less" it indicates you are physically or mentally required to care about the subject in such a way that you cannot push it from your mind. This is often the result of a personal relationship or deep emotional investment in the subject. Alternatively it can be caused by a disability or disorder.
Context, it makes language work!

Maybe the npc's, when they're talking like in the first sewer mission in Millenium city will actually say your character name instead of being silent for 6 seconds and then go seal the door! :)

I used to use a program called 'Say It' which was a text to speech synthesizer that gave you pitch and speed controls, and would speak back whatever you typed into it. Such programs have come quite a ways since then, and I bet they could have a generic male and female synthesizer which would allow us something similar to this. The problem would be that while we can close certain chat windows or ignore other players, a system to prevent us from having to hear unwanted players' voices would also have to be added. It's bad enough with how some people spam chat now - could you imagine if they could crank up the speed and pitch and start screaming like a bunch of chipmunks on caffeine and helium!

If there was an option to:
Have no voice
Choose the age of voice(Child, Adult, elder)
Choose the style(Normal, heroic, seductive, nerdy, Humorous)
The pitch
And any distortion of the voice(Metallic, Hollow, Demonic)
And only have voices in cut scenes and not grunts and groans in game
Then I would sign, but then again, this is Cryptic We're talking about... so I don't see this happening anytime at all...
