Dear unfortunate and unluckily stumbling into this thread reader,

I'd like to start by saying I have never ever played a board game deeper than monopoly before, and while I do regularly play cards a pen and paper game is a big step up I assume.

Me and my friends are huge fans of the western resident evil movies (Yes, all 4 of them rocked in our opinion!) and my friend recently purchased http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zombie_Survival_Guide as a fun joke. Anyhow the other day we were walking and talking and were trying to decide the best weapons and places to hide to survive your avergage zombie apocalypse and I suddenly realized that a PNP game would be the best way to mess around with these ideas.

Sooo, I'm kind of wondering, is 3 - 4 people holing up against a horde of zombies a good fit for the hero system or would it require some work to get it going. I found this book about future apocalypses (http://www.amazon.com/Post-apocalyptic-Hero-2007-Games-System/dp/1583661050/ref=sr_1_25?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1295476532&sr=1-25) based on the 5th edition of the Hero system.

If this were the right fit, would I go for the 5th edition to match the book link or would I be better off getting the two parts of sixth edition. If its not a good fit, would GURPS be better. Please understand I literally have no idea what the difference between GURPS and the HERO System is so I'm a complete noob in this area.

As for calculations, I've heard theres lots of maths involved but wikipedia says its all basic maths, and me and my friends are fine with maths since we're studying Physics A Level. Unless of course its the kind of math that takes ages to work out?

Thanks, FrozenBones :)

The math in the hero system is nothing particularly serious. Its quick and easy to handle.

The Hero System is designed to be used for any genre or setting. It has a list of common skills, and some very generic powers. How you define those powers for your game is what sets it apoart from another.

For example in a zombie apocalypse style setting you might decide that everyone is relatively normal (no superpowers). The power, "Ranged Killing Attack," would not be allowed as a superpower such as fire breath or anything of that sort, but might be allowed as a rifle.

As far as the work involved to get it going...you would need stats for zombies, heroes, and gear. Thats about it.

I think what your looking for is a game called Outbreak Undead Zombie Survival RPG. It has everything you could want. You can find it here http://outbreakundead.com/

Also read World War Z it's worth your time.

Sorry to necro this thread, but if the OP'er is still around, I know he'd want to know about this:

Twilight of the Dead
Survival Horror Roleplaying In the Nightmare World of the Living Dead (for the Hero System).
by William Mistretta

The original page no longer exists, but luckily it was preserved by the Internet Archive! Click Below!

this is one thread where "necro" actually applies in a good way.

;) :D

...but for what it's worth. World War Z by Max Brooks 'is' a really good read.

I even have it on audio book ( Mark Hamill does voice acting of the Battle of Yonkers veteran in the version I have.... go figure..M.H. doing voice acting ? heh.... he 'is' good at it after all ).

also I am looking forward to the big-screen release.

nom-nom-nom-nom .....

And one should not forget 'All flesh must be eaten' (http://www.allflesh.com/flesh.html) - this is a fairly simple to grasp, pick-up-and-play system designed specifically for a variety of zombie apocalypse scenarios.
