Looking at the news post for today with the leveling schedule, this section on the side caught my attention:
Archetypes, however, are more like comic heroes. They don't switch roles; they do their one thing really well. It lets us make more interesting and varied Archetypes as time goes on, too.
All current slotted passives are able to be used in at least 2 roles. While I understand the intent is to make Archetypes easier to play, this is really unnecessary.
They already have less powers and locked in choices, you don't need to lock them out of another game mechanic.

The idea is to force them to buy a sub. It may work; it may not. For me, it won't. (I assume it will be the same for so many other returning players giving the game another shot.) This game is still seriously lacking in so many areas. I did buy a sub for this month to level a couple of toons, but now that may be a waste of time as Emmert is saying silvers will have to pay to convert their framework toons to gold/silver AT's. I've already gone back to Allods for my team and PvE content and WoT for my PvP fix. It is easy for one to get the impression leadership at Cryptic must work in a vacuum with some of the decisions that are made there.

Could very well mean that archetypes are good at one thing and one thing only. If you're a tank, then you're not a healer and you're not DPS. Once the actual builds are known, we can see if by "roles" they meant CO roles, or just a more English-y usage of the word.

Having a set passive means that they are already limited to only two roles if they want to use the passive (well, offensives have both avenger and brawler as well as guardian, but I doubt both will simultaneously be a reasonable option for any of the archetypes, we'll have to see the attacks to know for sure).
Changing role is not that crucial I think, lot's of builds I play stay in one role all the time, the role the build was made for.
