View Full Version : Pre-defined Superstats for Archtypes - seriously?

Gotta quote this from Compiled Questions and Answers:
Do archetypes have predetermined superstats?
Lexeme: They are part of the archetype. Archetypes are set up to have the most effective superstat to go along with the powers.
Seriously? You have got to be kidding. I challenge Cryptic to name "the most effective superstat" for an archtype drawn mostly from a Martial Arts framework and see just how many experienced players will beg to differ.
Crypti, let archtype players choose their superstats. At least then it won't be your fault they'll complain how their first ttempt at a custom build sucks once they go Gold.

I kind of agree with you that players should be able to pick their own SS, but I also agree that set ATs can probably benefit from preselected SS. My guess is they will use the 2 SS that go with a majority of the powers in the set. If they have MA/regen, then they will probably have Dex/Rec as the SS. The tank"y" AT will probably have Str/Con, etc.
Once we get to see them in action in Beta, we can flesh out what doesn't make sense. They seem to be open to feedback on this kind of stuff.

Why? If it goes with a them, and they know with documentation what to expect, there is no trouble from misconception.
Edit
Let a sliver account buy a gold archetype with this feature. That then makes it a more clear difference between the two, and is that middle rung from gold and silver.

You're wrong. There was another thread discussing this already. Pre-defined superstats are a VERY good thing. If you think they choose the wrong ones when ATs are formally released, give feedback.

Form day one, the "suggested" superstats for the current frameworks were a bad thing. Even for largely in-framework characters. I named Martial Arts specifically because with powers/advantages from that set alone, DEX/EGO ir DEX/PRE are two options that can easily outshine DEX/STR. As such, I can't see how sticking an archetype using an MA framework with either of these three could possibly be a good thing.
That, and teaching players not to think about superstats will almost guarantee they'll have a bad play experience if they go Gold. That can't possibly be a good thing, considering they're supposed to subscribe after using up the month that came with retail key cheaply.

Remember that one of the main goals of the Archetype system is to make the game easy for new players to jump right in and start playing. Understanding stats is kind of tricky -- it requires research, and calls for decisions that noobs probably don't really care about right away, and it runs the risk that the new player picks terrible superstats and gimps themselves (a noob who has a lousy first experience isn't going to convert to a subscription).
So if you replace "most effective" with "very effective" then Cryptic's original assertion makes a lot of sense. Your Martial Arts example is perfect -- DEX/STR is a perfectly fine and viable set of superstats. Who cares if DEX/EGO is a bit better? The goal is to prevent noobs from accidentally taking INT/REC out of pure ignorance. Someone looking to min-max the most effective superstat should buy a Gold subscription, which they can do after trying the free Archetype with assigned superstats.
-- 77IM, wonders if converting to a Gold sub will include a free respec?

Ya, I think it's a good suggestion too as stated in the other thread.
While the devs may use the suggested stats that sometimes make no sense (Dex/Rec for ICE???) at least we can make suggestions when testing and possibly get them changed to more sensical stats.
But players having to make that choice on the other hand can get far far worse results, hands down.

I'll say it again - PTS. During testing, if people find a misplaced super stat, bug it, forum it, shout it from rooftops, etc. Thinks aren't already final.
