View Full Version : Please don't open zone chat to silver

okay, there are a lot of F2P games out there, and most of them do one thing that certainly makes a lot of sense from both a payment point of view and as a way to block goldspammers and Barrens chats.
PLEASE strongly consider selling 'announce' items in the store.
Do not allow a silver player to make any commentary in zone chat unless they purchase an item. One item purchase per zone comment.
It's possible to make items that are good for five or even ten comments, with a counter that disables the item after it's been used ten times.
It's quite possible to get a team, roleplay, and even ask for help without resorting to zone chat, and this will help keep zone chat a little cleaner (No 'open ip' trashtalkers' that don't care about their account getting banned) as well as encouraging people to subscribe since, if they are talkers, it would be cheaper in the long run for them to sub.
I know this sounds Machiavellian, but as a veteran game designer (albeit indies only) This has proven to be one of the better methods of keeping down our signal to noise ratio, and it is also an understood and accepted convention that can keep your funding in the green.

Lively zone chat is good. Something to keep spammers out is all that is required. I think my favorite part of WoW WAS Barrens chat. I'd only turn it on every now and then, but it was always a fun, sociable, hilariously chaotic place.

That depends on your server. On quellious it was nothing but pvp trash talking and attempts to get around the bad word filter, and goldspammers.

If players can't ask question in zone chat when they need help, it is unlikely they will stick around. Finding groups is possible, but not ideal with out some form of zone communication.

Silver member are not they only load mouth snooks with a misplaced sense of entitlement to post BS and smack. Do you not think taking away the little things that help build an MMO community, the server population will dwindle, or stay relatively the same leading to shutting down production for this game? As for spammers, Cryptic could make some extra money by selling advertisement/billboards to gold farmers.

Why not make a Gold Gloable Channel and a Silver Globale Channel. And allowed Goldies to talk in Silver Gloable Channel?

That sounds like a good idea.

Yeah, I can support this. A private global channel for gold, and hopefully silver has access to the rest of the public channels.

I think the approach of limiting access for 20 hrs is fine. I am against getting too prejudicial here, most silver people won't be trolls or haters. If something we should receive them well, remember the silver of today could be the gold of tomorrow.:p

There will be a lot of folks who genuinely need help, and many who will be a benefit to our community. I think open communication is an aid to getting more folks to feel at home (which leads to getting more involved, spending time and money, and benefitting the game).
Trolls and spammers can be put on ignore. When STO came out, I was gold-spammed ad nauseum, and it is a nuisance, no doubt - but I can overlook that if the other side of the coin is gaining more friends.
The suggestion of having a silver channel that golds can access sounds like a very good catch-all solution for the situation.

I think leaving them with zone chat is fine, since I think they need to be in-game 20 hours to start to use it. Also, if there are spammers, we all have a handy-dandy "Report Behavior" feature that includes spamming and inappropriate behavior. They want to act like wild untamed monkeys, fine - they'll loze zone chat and have to make a new account and go back through the 20-hour timer thing.
However, I personally think the 20-hour thing is a bit long, since if anyone's going to have a question about something, he's going to ask it before 20 hours are up. I guess PMs would be good here, but I think a "mentor" channel or a "mentor program" would be great for these cases - some members sign up to be mentors (maybe get a title for it) and they're flagged for a search for online mentors or something that a newbie can qaccess and ask questions.

There's wisdom here.

The first 20 hours could be the make or break for someone who is totally new to the game. Granted, it may force them to use resources more such as Wiki. However, in some cases it could turn them away as they get more frustrated looking for help but not being able to get it - something even as simple as, /b Been at this for an hour, and at the end of my rope. Where do I find this (item/person/clue/mission).
I read people saying other F2P do this, however, of the many F2P's I have/am using, none have limited my chat. I have in demo and trial modes, but never in a F2P environment.

It could be implemented a help channel for that, there won't be a perfect way to solve all issues but a compromise will have to be made

A global help channel that you're automatically subscribed to, and is the only one you can use in the first x hours of gameplay, would be a great way to make it see use too ;)
