Y'know, for a moment I was a tad scared that their buisness model was to just keep churning out MMO's that would die in a month to make money, but it seems like they've decided to keep going with CO, and keep improving it. At first when I saw it was going F2P, I was like:

"OH MY GOD THIS GAME IS DOOMED ABORT ABORT!" *Sirens*

But then I saw the difference between F2P and P2P...

Cryptic/Atari, I applaud you. No, really. I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything here.

The way your doing this, as far as I see, is:

Extended trial for F2Pers, and nothing will change for subscribers.

I mean, that's basicly what it is, an extended trial. F2P players will immediatley see the "customize your powers! (Subscribers only)" and "Gold Member costume item only" and immediatley want to subscribe or buy the costume items from the cash shop.

I hope they make alot of money off this, I really do actually hope they do. Because it'll be a massive boost for CO as a whole - the only thing I'm worried about is how this will affect the community because, let's face it, CO has one of the best community's that I've ever seen in an MMO (atleast, the RP community), but I suppose that CO having a good community on face level will make the impact on it minimal.

Hats off to you, Cryptic, you devious buggers. :D

Eh? Atari smart?

You get smart by copying others?

my thoughts exactly, but lets wait and see.
Mine.

Regardless, it's still a good move, even if they did rip it off from other people.

Only thing I'm concerned about is the damage boosting items, and the impact it'll have on the community.

Same here. As soon as I saw the heading of the email that was sent out, I knew exactly what was happening and I thought "Oh crap." But once I read the info on how they're doing the whole thing, I actually think it's going to be a positive thing, something like a new beginning. I hope it works, and I hope to see a lot of new faces around.

I heard everyone shout 'F2P!!!' and i was like 'not again!'. Upon investigation, however, I found they plan to use the dual channel model. I actually feel better about the future of this game now.

F2P + Subscription models = Hellgate London.

Was this Roper's idea? I don't think we want another titanic. I sure hope cryptic can make this work.

A trial? I think not. You see, come 2011, ATARI/Cryptic will be the only ones to have a Superhero online multiplayer game that anyone can just jump into, download and start playing. SOE will have their DCUO out, and NCSoft / Paragon Studios will have CoH/V, but neither of those two will be able to offer a free experience that allows the player to advance a character from Lv1 to max-level and enjoy all accessible game zones.

...A trial? I think not. :)

Yeah... you might want to check again - maybe a different email address? Or your spam folder?

I see it as a hybrid North American Asian MMO. It is free to play, and you want better perks, you pay a monthly sub. They only thing that makes little to no sense is limiting the subs to 10 market slots, and limiting chat. Seriously, limiting tells and /b seems like a very bad idea.

Exactly. CO in comparison to launch is like a whole new game. The amount of polish and new content we've gotten is awesome, but many people who left last September have never bothered checking the game out since. This is almost like a re-launch of the game. I hope it does end up being a fresh start.

Yesterday:

my friend- Hey you should check out City of Heroes now they just had an expansion and it's totally awesome!

me: Eh I never really liked COX, you wanna check out Champions? I still have that lifetime sub.

my friend: Oh that game sucks dude, they made it free to play now. It's probably closing soon.

me: What where did you hear that?

my friend: Oh Cryptic sent me an email. That game is such a ripoff of COX except they took out everything that was fun.
----

So.. yeah. I hope they can handle the already entrenched opinions of CO through this relaunch but somehow I don't predict this going too well.

This friend was the one who got me interested in Champions before it came out, a real superfan, we both bought a copy to play together and he quit after the first month never to return. I really hope we can pick up the kind of numbers they think they are going to (DDO, LOTRO numbers)

It's kind of annoying to be the running joke of the MMO space.

thats because of pre-formed opinions. frankly this game has come a long way since launch.

its a shame he didn't give it another go to be fair.

i've never play COX but most i've talked to here so they could never, ever go back to COX combat so his opinion seems harsh.

Oh it was definitely harsh and I did have a discussion with him at length about CO's strong points, I just felt that was an interesting indicator of the public's perception of CO, especially the majority of former players who may not be exposed to the game, and the amount of information regarding the game that we are. It was also a pretty funny way of being told about the F2P transition.. I did eventually get the e-mail too.. Oh well.

Atari (the brand) can be accused of alot but not for being bumb. the godfather of modern games one of the oldest brands out there. they know what they are doing, even if it not always works out.

The current Atari used to be INFOGRAMES, a french publisher. The "godfather of modern games" disappeared a LONG time ago. This company is Atari in name ONLY.

You DO realise that not doing this would allow spammers such as gold farmers, formerly banned players, and anyone who wanted to act like an 8yo in zone chat to create new free accounts to spam us with faster than GMs could ban them, at zero financial outlay to the spammers, right?

Giving F2P unlimited chat from the first hour they logged in would be an unmitigated disaster.

Dagnammit !!! - You mean i'm stuck with that arthritic creaking & cracking atari joystick I've knackered from frantically wiggling in Activison's 'Decathlon (http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=126)'. No wonder my huge shipment of increasingly frustrated letters went unanswered.

*cries

...Oh, and very much tend to agree with the OP. It is an extra layer of restrictive F2P alongside of our current paid & inclusive subscription plan.

It also equals Dofus... an mmo which has millions of players, spawned a spin-off (DA) and a sequel (Wakfu).
I played for about 2 years.
So the model does not automatically equal fail.

Another thing people are overlooking about this move by Cryptic is the genuine pressure DCUO has been put under before it even launches!
CO is now (or rather it will be) the worlds only f2p superhero mmo.

This means that DCUO has to put out a 5 star triple A chart topping beast of a game... or face potential customers turning to CO instead... because hey, it's free!

Or DCUO could counter with their own F2P model... Which means I can play it without having to sub to 2 games lol.
