View Full Version : Poll: Keyboard or Controller

Just wanted to take a poll of what people are using for interface. I'm using a basic mouse and keyboard with the standard WSAD movement and 1,2,3,.. ALT+1,2,3,... for powers. I have done brief experiments with other key binds, etc. but I must be slowing down in my old age because I can't do too much at one time without randomly flailing at the keyboard.
What are you using?

A Logitech dual action controller.
Before Cryptic added the ability to map generic controller buttons to xbox controller buttons, I used a program called GlovePIE to map controller buttons to keyboard and mouse buttons/movements. While trying to mimic the functionality I was used to with a keyboard + mouse on a controller, I realized that my poor left hand was pulling of some crazy finger gymnastics to play this game with keyboard + mouse. I've found that using a controller is much more comfortable.

Short answer: mouse and keyboard.
Long answer:
I have a 360 controller that I sometimes use for low-level melee characters and it works fine, but I find keyboard and mouse to be much more efficient when you have 12-15 skills on your hotbar, team or SG chat going, items to interact with and 17 loot/talk to the scientist/pick up crate buttons show up on screen at once. Furthermore, I have sixteen 40s and remembering all the button combinations for that many different skills would be impossible for me. A PA character with three toggle skills running or cooling down, casters with lots of maintains and holds, a healer/buffer, a growth character with three enrage builders, etc... Too many combos to remember and I need the icons to know what I'm doing when I log on the character that's needed by the team I'm in.
I do have "a gaming mouse", though, and bind certain functions to the extra buttons there. The energy builder/attack trigger is always on my thumb button, for instance. I also bind some combos to the numpad, so it's not all clicking icons.
I don't PvP in this game, but I imagine if you have a pure PvP build with a handful of skills and a standard attack sequence, the gamepad is much faster. I've done fine with keyboard and mouse in PvP in Lineage 2, **** and LotRO - in fact, because of skill chains and icons that change according to the attack sequence, I'd say keyboard and mouse is king in many MMOs - but CO is different with its faster combat and very few attack options, really. It can be played like a console game (complete with a clunky UI): click ABBBC, block and repeat, which lends itself more to a gamepad.
Perhaps those who respond to your poll should also state if they mainly play low-level characters, or have several 40s, and if they mostly PvP or PvE? Or if they RP! I can't imagine anyone doing that with a gamepad :D

I use the 360 controller. In the interim between getting tired of the ergonomics of KB & mouse and finding CO, I tried rigging up some other MMOs with a controller, but found nothing satisfying until this game came along with built-in support.
Responding to PrinceLala, I agree that it is the simplicity of CO that makes it possible to play it fully with a gamepad, and that most MMOs depend too much on the mouse especially. Creating button combinations for all the abilities is not the biggest problem in those other games, it's interacting with all the little bits of stuff that pop up and expect you to click it. I also have lot's of characters, I play at all levels and PvP as well as PvE.

Aye, i've changed the strifes and the turns.
I guess Q and E are the default turn keys.
During combat theres no much need for vertical movement, also not all characters got the flight power.
Anyway, i use the default space bar for jump/upward, and when needed X allows you to move downwards.
Out of combat I usually use the mouse for facing but during combat i try this system a guild mate recomended to me and i worked perfectly.

Ahhh, so few n52 users. Pity, you get the fine control of the mouse, versatility of the keyboard, and freedom of movement while attacking of a Gamepad. You know not what you're missing! I'm literally incapable of playing WASD anymore after experiencing the n52. Not kidding. It's like I'm fumbling with wooden fingers on a keyboard now. I own one.
Bought it a couple years ago for CoX.. and after setting it up and using it for just one day, I had a massive set of cramps and continued pain all in my left hand and wrist.
I also really wished it had a "flip" option to set it up for left handed use [I.E., Nostromo on the right hand], but it doesn't. I stopped using it and considered the money spent on it a waste just three days after purchase.

Such a pity that it didn't work for you. I literally can't play without mine anymore (which is mildly concerning). :[
I bought...four more of them, after I got used to the first one. That's how determined I am to not be without one. I might as well cut off my left hand if I get rid of it. O.o
I did buy an XB360 controller specifically for this game, only to find that it was like steering a tank. And controllers have generally been my thing. The 360 controller made my thumbs start to lock up (they're good like that) which was unfortunate. Lack of buttons and confusing key combos didn't help either...
In the end, it's different strokes for different folks. :]

I have most of my abilities mapped to the four face buttons either on their own or in combination with R1 or R2 (face keys map to 1-4, right shoulder buttons to control and shift. I had to move block though cause if I try to use alt + 1-4 for abilities and tab for targeting... well, you can imagine how well that wor!SURPRISE DESKTOP!ks in the middle of a fight :( I also use 4 as jump, in that set up. Keyboard+mouse for me. I'd like to try out a controller at some point... though I can't help thinking I'd struggle due to lack of buttons. I also like to look around a lot. Chat would be another issue, as would sorting through inventory, I imagine...
I don't like having to use keycombo's very much, which is why I tend to map out all my (often used) abilities around my left hand. So I use WASD for moving and strafing, ~,1-5, Q, E, R, F and T for powers, and I click the ones I don't need that much.

Keyboard + Mouse
Keyboard for powers + jump.
Mouse for movement, travel power, follow and interact.
WASD didn't suit me, because I prefer mouse-look, and I couldn't find a way to activate powers that didn't require me to either move fingers away from the WASD keys or lose mouse-look control by activation powers using the mouse.
So I came up with this control scheme, which I use on all my characters.
I have never have more than 4 attack powers on a toon, so I can always set it up like thos.
Key 1 is Block
Key 2 Lunge or hold
Key 3 Single target nuke
Key 4 is for AoE
Key 5 for primary attack.
Keys 6, 7, and T for heal/panic stuff.
Alt-slots are used for setup powers, like forms, circles or debuffs.
Pinky rests on key 2, but can also activate 1.
Index finger rests on 5, but can also activate 6, 7 and T (used to activate Alt+1 slot).
Thumb on Space or Alt
With this setup I never have move my hand on the keyboard during combat.
In my opinion this allows me control toons that look and feel very different, with very little need for adjustment between.
I also realize that this setup could probably easily be transfered to a controller. Maybe I should give it a try.

Xbox 360 controller is so intuitive, there hasn't been a need for me to bind anything. It doesn't take very long to get proficient with tab targetting either. Cryptic ought to promote the use of a controller as a selling point for the game (after they refine it a bit), because it seriously feels very natural.

My wife bought me a G13 last week. Took me a couple days to get used to it, but now I love it. I've always used a trackball for the right hand, though. On the G13, I programmed it as follows:
I use the stick instead of WASD
Middle finger (G11) rests on "Space"
G12 is my energy builder set to Maintain
G10 is my pre-combat buff (e.g., lunge, MR, Flashfire, Toxic Nanites)
Powers 2-6 are G3-G7, if I need anything else, one of the thumb buttons is "alt"
Middle mouse is a during-combat buff, like a heal

At the time just after the game was launched I had previously played CoX so naturally I went for the traditional keyboard + mouse, but I noticed how weird it felt for CO trying to move around using WSAD while spamming the 1 key for my energy builder. It felt really unnatural. For a game like CoX with cooldown powers, keyboard + mouse is perfect, just not CO in my opinion.
So I tried using my trusty ol' Xbox 360 controller and realized how much more natural it felt spamming no-cooldown powers with buttons as opposed to keys. Left hand is for movement, right hand for powers. Previously it was WSAD + 1-0 keys on the keyboard all on the same left hand. Yuck. With that mentioned I've always been using the controller for this game and find it a more enjoyable experience.
It might seem like a hassle using a controller and then putting it down to chat using keyboard, but if you've got enough table space then it's not that bad to manage. I got used to it pretty quickly.

Everything is for the most part crazy smooth with the 360 controller, really well done, and while there may be a million really cool macros, probably for pvp stuff, I just haven't found the need.
For the record, however, targeting is asstastic, no matter what you use, and I honestly can't fathom how any devs who play this game even moderately haven't been annoyed at one point or another to make someone do something about it.

Is it by chance a wireless controller that was connected through the charging pack? The charging pack connects to a USB port and works for charging the controller through the computer, but it doesn't actually connect the controller for the purpose of playing games. That requires a wireless adapter (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2).
If it's a wired controller, then normally it "should" just be plug and play, so I'm not sure what would cause a problem there.

I have the G13 mapped to WASD, block, TAB targeting, the two power bars, travel power 1 & 2 and the 5 device slots though I don't use those much.
I've always (since beta in CoH) used mouse buttons 4 & 5 for Jump and Auto-Run, now with 12 more I have the button under my thumb mapped to "Z" others show the map, inventory, hit escape etc. Other than chat I really don't have to touch my keyboard.
In CoH I used to have binds set up for any number of things but I just haven't made the effort in CO because it doesn't seem as social to me. Probably the only real thing I miss about CoH (other than having actual Stealth abilities :mad:).

For those of you with wrist problems, I strongly recommend the Evoluent Vertical mouse. 5 (6 on the newest version) fully programmable buttons, and more importantly, it won't aggravate problematic right wrists like normal mice might. I can't use a standard mouse for more than a few days before my right arm turns to a wreck for weeks. I now have a VM for each of my computers, and it reduces the strain to a negligible level.
Paired with my classic n52, it's gaming bliss. :]

Some players have mentioned the Naga here. Tried it and hated it myself, returning to my trusty DeathAdder.

mainly the xbox 360 controller, but with my own binds rather than the default (added combinations for targetting party members for heals)

360 controller, but with custom binds for team targeting and getting into the menus. Alas, I still have to use a mouse for inventory to keep myself from foaming at the mouth. Still, it enables me to play on my laptop. It's not the most precise thing on earth, but it does help with the action-y feel of things.

Logitech Dual Action using Shackle's FPS style controls layout with camera rotation and strife swapped from right to left joystick, to allow me to turn and aim while still mashing buttons.

I bought a X-box controller specifically to try for this game... After 30 minutes of complete frustration, I put it away and haven't looked at it since. Oh, I had no trouble with the technical side of it, I could get it to work with no problem, but the game just didn't feel right with it. Combat (PVE) was a complete pain and I wasn't about to attempt PVP with it. No, for me, its keyboard and mouse all the way.

I use a PS3 controller for movement and fighting, I use a mouse for inventory stuff. I've enjoyed the game a lot more since I started playing with a controller. The only real issues are having to target people in pvp, mostly because of all there pets but at times it seems like it doesnt want to target the closest enemy, and trying to use healing powers for others is a slight pain but not a deal breaker. Otherwise movement and fighting is great.

Speaking of key binds, how would I go about typing a bind to a controller?
I use the PS3 controller and I would like to bind target_friend_next to the PS button.
First go to the keybinds menu, find the command for target next friend, and let your mouse hover over it, it'll show something like "/+TargetFriend" (not sure the exact name, but you'll need the "+" but not the "/")
Then find the name of the button you want to bind to, I'll use the X (A) button as an example, in CO it's represented as Ab.
Type in the chat bar:
/bind Ab "+TargetFriend"
If you want to bind two buttons to perform a command, simply place a + sign in between them.
Ex: /bind Ab+joy6 "+TargetFriend"
Just reread your post, not sure you can bind to the PS button. Hope this helps for other binding though, I like to bind to the triggers + a direction on the d-pad for targeting friends.

Maybe I should try a PS3 controller... I've always been more fond of the playstation controllers than I have the X-box controller.

Using the controller changes the whole dynamic of the game. And ps3 controllers have 16 buttons which gives you a ton of options for button combination. It takes a while to set everything up into a comfortable location, but once it's done it's pretty rewarding.

Picked up an XBox controller over the weekend to see if it lives up to the hype. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet, but it feels very slow and awkward compared to the keyboard and mouse to me. My survivability goes WAY down on most characters when I use it.
It's a lot more comfortable ergonomically though, so hopefully I'll get used to it over time.

PS3 controller for combat.
KB + mouse for pretty much everything else.
I'm using the default controller layout and binds. It's actually very efficient when you compartmentalize various skills. Put buffs and heals in one toolbar section, energy forms in another, frequently used attacks to instantly use with front buttons, and heavy/charge attacks to activate with a seperate shoulder button.
Works like a charm. Although, you have to have FPS options set in your options for it to be effective.
Not FPS keybinds, the other thingamajing.
Auto-targeting on aim reticle = win.

I use keyboard and mouse, and a layout I learned from playing first person shooters. I wrap all my powers around ASDW so I can easily access them. Screw all that Alt+1 crap.
ASDW = Movement
Q = Support Drones
E = Circle of Ebon Wrath
R = Skarn's Bane
F = Ego Sprites
C = Protection Field
X = Teleportation
T = Fire Flight
Z = Toggle Support Drones to attack mode
V = Immolation
1 = Energy Builder
2 = Summon Shadows
3 = Sigils
A nice, tight little package.

With targeting the way it is, I have abandoned my controller. It makes me sad, because it is very fun and responsive - but targeting with it is a nightmare for me.
I have a merc z-board, which I love, and a trac-ball mouse. Some hate the mouse, but I have a crippled right hand and it helps me greatly . . . so even without the pad, I have gear I really enjoy.
